natu comments on NiP release

Joona "natu" Lepännen took to Facebook to shed some light on his release from NiP, the team's result at ESL One Cologne and the problems they faced in recent months.

Three days ago NiP decided to cut all ties with coach Joona "natu" Leppänen, who has been with the team for four months, but couldn't make the difference, as NiP continued to struggle in important matches.

After letting a few days pass for the dust to settle, the Finn took to Facebook to give answers to a lot of questions surrounding his release from the team, such as why the move was made and issues the team had outside of the game.

natu will move on to casting

He also shed some more light on the ESL One Cologne result, which came as a surprise to the team, given how well they were doing in practice beforehand, and the individual players' lack of confidence:

Looking back at my time with NiP:
As many of you know by now, I am no longer working for NiP as their CS:GO team coach. I decided to take a little bit of distance before posting my views and thoughts on the matter – let the dust settle first. Also I’ve been busy ever since returning from Cologne by working for PGL here in Bucharest, Romania. If you haven’t checked their stream yet I highly advice you to do so as they are setting the bar for production quality in many respects. These guys do an outstanding job because of how much they love Counter-Strike. I’m honored to be a part of their product.
First of all I want to emphasize the fact that I would take the same decision of joining NiP every single time, even though the time wasn’t as fruitful as I’d expect – it has taught me a lot and given me very much. The team has some of the greatest fans in the industry and it was a pleasure to get to see that first hand. The players are great people and I have made new friends I can share a beer with in any given occasion.
What took me by surprise was the fact that there were a lot of things outside the game that unfortunately had their toll on actual playing. Things I would have no control over and most of them things I don’t wish to elaborate more on. But what I can say is there were many psychologicly challenging issues. Players you have seen win it all and break records proving to be in a fragile state in terms of self confidence is not something you’d expect to be working with when talking about NiP.
I think that could have been mostly salvageable if we would have simply decided to withdraw from competing for a while. But the enormous pressure of top tier online leagues running constantly and tournaments that we ”needed” to be at on the shoulders – we never took that decision, which I regret of not suggesting in retrospect. We wanted to take a more strategic approach to playing at a point during summer, but with constantly competing in online leagues – we never had the possibility of sitting down and simply grinding maps in and out – causing frustration as our online league campaigns weren’t going according to plan and players never got to be comfortable with that way of playing. This caused an effect of simplifying things and trying to put effort into tendencies and reactive play of how we proceed in any given situation. I don’t think that landed in their heads in the manner that it was supposed to – combined with lack of selfconfidence and quite frankly too many players having a challenging period in individual play caused an unfortunate spiral of bad results.
Going into ESL Cologne I personally felt good, everyone had some time off from the game and actually getting to spend quality time with their families. As many teams indicated, we were doing exceptionally well during practice – I even thought to myself at the time it went too well. We weren’t winning because we were ”scrimming” people and running around. We were winning because we were executing properly, we were reading the game properly, our instinctive plays were correct and individuals were playing a lot better than they had in a long time. To put it simply, we had all the ingredients to do very well at the event. Unfortunately the event went as it did, nothing like our expectations. I was mind blown with the fashion we performed there. There’s only one way of expressing what happened: We choked in the high pressure situation. Tunnel visioning and putting yourself in uncomfortable situations – not playing by your instincts is all it takes in top tier Counter-Strike to not play naturally.
What this team badly needed was a few big wins, get over that hump and feel confident and relaxed in those situations. We could have achieved that had we taken a break early in the summer and decided to focus in practicing instead of going to events and leagues, losing more games and losing more selfconfidence.
It was best for both parties that we went our separate ways. The team has a lot of questions to be asked going down the road and I won’t be taking stance on those matters out of respect toward them. With one thing coming to an end, new opportunities arise. I’m definitely staying in the industry and I have things on the works that I’ll be involved with – together with doing casting / analysing at tournaments aswell.
I do hope I have answered a few questions and given some insight to what these few months have been like. Again, I don’t regret anything and I truly loved my time with the boys and it was something I’ll be proud of having the opportunity to be a part of. Thanks goes to NiP Gaming as an organisation and all their sponsors – especially Xtrfy has my support smile emoticon

Well to be fair, All the Kinguin players said that LEGIJA does a fantastic job, and are improving their teamplay and communication, so you should prob. give your hltv research a retry mate... ScreaM even said in an interview that LEGIJA makes them a strong team instead of individually good players and make the communication easier, so on that area, you are pretty wrong i guess :) - That to be said, i think natu is a facking useless fatty, who never should have been allowed to be a coach in cs:go, seems like nip wasn't satisfied either.. But kinguin themselves disagree with you on your LEGIJA comment :)

That's different though. A Coach who also functions as an In game leader is way more useful than just someone who sits there and says oh I'm a coach when they actually dont have to do anything.

well first off kinguin is noticeably better. maybe they didn't perform their first lan with legija but to become legend for the next Major is huge, also they've made bo3 with some heavy teams a lot closer then they would had 3-4 months ago. also natu would probly rape ur ass in game as well as outside of game. so please hold shithole and try to use to shitbrain. also don't try reddit.

lol he did not scam anyone, it was a troll on hltv (even hltv staf went on Twitter to say that this guy was a major troll with 35 banned accounts) and he presented "evidence" which were just speculations and ofc the kida on hltv found something to hate on. he did also stop being a coach long before the suposed charity "scam"

The unfortunate results of the team are not to blame one. Blame it all. The team simply could not find his game, and not just blame the coach. Hopefully, they'll be back in shape, otherwise, we will lose the legend

Many analysts mentioned this and i agree with it, NiP and natu are not suited for each other. What NiP needs is a highly strategical coach that could perfectly read the opponents and give the leader input, natu is good with chemistry and fixing stuff outside the game. I wish him all the luck!

No, this is where you are wrong. NiP have no intention of changing their style, they have massive ego's in game and if GTR or f0rest wants something done, they will make the team do it. They wont take orders from anyone. What can you do to a team that is so reluctant to change their game style? If natu was allowed to bring in some major tactical differences, we would have seen a difference, but he wasnt they just wanted to stick to their old style because they are naive and arrogant enough to think they are still good players who can win games easily. Just look at the Maikelele situation when he was in NiP. He changed the teams style with his aggressive awping, he was the point man of the team, that change did so much good to NiP, however the players didnt like the change, even though it put them back to being a formidable team and they kicked Maikelele because they wanted a bitch like fifflaren, someone who they could put in the bad positions and he wouldnt complain, which is what they got in allu, even though he was better than fiffy, the reversion back to their old style wasnt a good decision

exactly, NiP uses same tactics still like 1-2 years ago and nothing changed, nothing new at all. At the major Fifflaren said every strat/tactic that nip would use even before the games started and he was 100% right every time, they are soo easy to read and predictable. Sometimes you just feel like gtr forest etc have huge egos and think they are best in the world and do nothing wrong.

of course they wont say everything and i didnt claim that. but that guy claimed that their failure came from not intending to change anything, gtr and forest being cocky assholes and them being fucked in the head, as they are resisting to change although theyve sucked since over a year. clearly that cant be the main issue, and natu has mentioned some reasonable reasons in his text. not all of them maybe, but some that make sense.

And this is exactly what they need.. a new strategical leader that would improve their 2012 strats. They obviously no longer work.. and need changes NiP doesn't need anything what Natu offers.

Exactly! Anyone who has criticized NIP has been crucified because of the whole unquestionable dogma surrounding their star power. After all, how many teams have struck deals with McDonald's for a McNip?! What they seem to have forgotten though is that past laurels don't hold water in future. f0rest can get on mic and say "oh I'll change my form definitely towards the end of the year" and you can immediately sense the bull he's spewing. If it was that much under your control, why wait? It's got less to do with what happened at a major than for him to admit that it was coming and he knew. Maikelele re-invigorated the playstyle of the team but they felt threatened that he would become the talk of the town which was unacceptable to their egos.

I'm fairly sure Natus release wasn't about him not doing his job (correctly), more likely they just wanted to see if a coach would bring something new to the team. Apparently not, if I understood correctly. Whatever the case is, I hope nip will deliver in the future, be that with current roster or a new one. More teams in the pro-scene can't be a bad thing, at least for the viewers. As far as natu goes, best of luck w/ whatever he ends up doing. He's a great guy and my opinion isn't even biased because of nationality. JW good but natu best.

basically what he's trying to say is: NiP are a sinking ship and they all are washed up old has beens who think they're good because once upon a time 87-0 happened. He also said that the huge fanbase NiP has are a bunch of little fagits who all look like this gyazo.com/7603b9d9beab9836802885c1f2b6f3.. and he doesnt want to associate himself with scrubs like that

Are you kidding me??? You are even more fucking clueless then the danes with its immigration policy and politics. You are under high denial, my friend. Only plus side in economic growth against Sweden and the other countries is the GPD in oil. And you would have any clue of how the OPEC oil war is at the moment you will know that Norway is suffering. Oil is now cheaper due to the OPEC oil war and Norway are bleeding money and losing intelligence. So njaah, you are not totally right, just maybe a little bit temporary. Experts say you will suffer the most of this OPEC oil war the upcoming 5-8 years. Your oil is actually 12:- SEK at the moment so thanks for being someones whores. Haha okay, nice Internet fantasy. I bet you can dream - something you people in Norwegistan can afford at the moment cuz you people do suffer from a cerebral sickness that causes main stupidity. Now troll, crawl back from the ass you came from. You have lost this and you bring shame to the gates of Vallhall

Even tho the oil income isn't the best atm we are doing totally fine financially because we heavily limit how much our state is allowed to use each year. As for the troll-part, my parents own a firm + a farm dealing with animal skins. I have two day jobs and work as a freelancing programmer. Kid, don't even try. Swedes are cheap workers, don't deny it.

A countrys wealth is not based on the damn term you mentioned "heavily limit how much our state is allowed to use" its the GPD that shows us how wealthy and it hasent gone so good (jw best) for Norwegistan So do mine parents and so do I. So please. I can hire your whole fucking family do pick apples. I have done my work for my entire life and everything is served for me the coming 25+ years. I dont need 2 part jobs to get around. TLDR NiP needs some win to gain confidence again so they will go down compete in tier 2 leagues. and some PR for PGL.

So the team that once dominated the scene completely, went to 5 majors finals, and seem to perform over expectations at every major, have scene scare and no self confidence? Something here doesn't add up. I think he left out some pretty important details, whatever they may be I have no clue.

whats retarded here? this kid said that theyre confidence cant be shattered bcs they were in 5 major finals. theyve been doing shit in most any tournament they attended since dreamhack summer 2014. they used to be by far the best team and then they went down the crapper basically apart from the 3 majors they had from that time since cologne this year. they were not able to consistently compete with the best in the world and they underachieved at many big lans that means, their confidence may very well be shattered. so why is my comment retarded? pls tell me!

Or they realize that not many people who have brains rank them as a top 3 team anymore, and most have them not as top 5. Its a huge fall from glory, and honestly for players who have made their lives revolve around this game I can see how that would have a profound psychological impact.

i can only speak for myself but, when i play, i play best when I can play as I want. There is nothing worser than when someone standing behind and trying 2 direct one. it's a good thought but it wont work, especially when timing is everything. the players need 2 talk 2 each of others, all the time. and not the coach speaking 4 everyone.

This is actually really interesting. Assuming what he said is true, it seems that there are some internal issues within NiP. That being said, I can certainly see why. However one looks at this, though, NiP are 100% responsible for their own predicament and their refusal to adapt to the changing meta of Counter Strike is on them. NiP could be a good team again, but they need to accept that the way they play is not really viable anymore, despite how skilled they can be. Also, I feel that they really need to attend more easy LANs and stop going to the ones with top teams until they can regain their confidence. Steamrolling T2 teams wont be fun for the fans, the teams they beat, or NiP, but if thats what it would take to get them back on track then by all means they should do that.

Having people flashing for you when you want to entry frag is important, helping out your awper on a bombsite is crucial to hold against a terrors rush it's not a small thing. If you played against good teams you would know what i mean. Fifflaren was a problem when he was not playing well but since he had 4 other good aimers in his team it was ok until a few others would underperform.
2015-08-31 20:14

it can be applied to all teams, not just nip with fifflaren. but it was an good example. you gonna struggle hard af if u are having one guy in the team who basiclly land 3 to 5 frags on a map. why settle for a mediocre "supportplayer" when you can find another one that throws flashbangs aswell as taking their frag each round. people seems 2 underestimate the most basic things in CS - of killing the adversary.

The most important thing is to take the frags you are supposed to kill. That's up to his teammates to decide if he does well or not fifi got replaced we know why and that's it. 99% people talk about frags they always did and telling me your example about fifi it's just fans who think the team could have been good like the old days with the lineup unchanged. Fifi wasn't the only problem in the team look now what they are doing while they have allu.

NiP continuously fail to realise that their problems have been going in a circle for some time now. Their problem wasn't Fifflaren, Maikelele, allu or even natu. The problems they have are game wise and psychological wise. They keep washing their hands with the guy that's easy to pick on from the bunch - whether Fifflaren or the newest guy on the team. That's no way of tackling the issues in your team that are way deeper than just one guy under-performing. NiP continue to deny reality even to this day.

I find it really funny how the players on NIP really think firing their coach is going to change a thing, reading this only confirms what I thought was the problem, egos/confidence. every single interview ive seen get right in hes just totally defensive with every question asked about them not doing well. they need to get over themselves and stop trying to live up to the whole "best team in history" thing and just play the game like they know. IMO the players of NIP have a serious ego problem (mainly get right) and its just causing them to fail horribly anytime every little thing isn't going as they would like.

^ Actually natu said is the opposite, they are not feeling confident enough. Ego = exaggerated confidence.
