Hiko joins Liquid

Team Liquid have bolstered their lineup with free agent Spencer "Hiko" Martin, who has been trying for the team in the last two weeks.

Following Spencer "Hiko" Martin's departure from Cloud9 in December last year due to disagreements, the American star went through a period of unsuccessful attempts to make a new promising team in the North American scene.

Joining with iBUYPOWER back then went into shambles when most of the lineup got banned indefinitely for match-fixing, which resulted into Hiko taking a break from competitions.

Hiko finds a new home in Liquid

Later on he tried his luck in Nihilum, as he was unable to form a dreamteam with Tyler "Skadoodle" Latham within the North American scene, but that spell didn't last long either.

After a one-season attempt with Maximum Effort, one of North America's best in 2013 joins up with Liquid, who boast some of the players Hiko wanted to form a team with a few months ago.

The lurker has been trying out for the last two weeks, as he was seen in a few official matches in RGN and CEVO. Now the move is official and comes with an extensive statement, shedding light on Hiko's road since joining forces with Nihilum:

Today I am excited to announce a new chapter in my CS:GO Career. I am now a permanent player on Team Liquid.
I want to first talk about my time in Nihilum. I knew it was a risky move and I wanted to get my foot back into the competitive scene. When I first joined them, I was contacted by Semphis who was very confident that the team had huge potential and that we could possibly be a top team in the USA. Immediately it seemed apparent there were many problems with the team that existed in their core before Semphis and I even joined. We tried to make things work by making everyone feel comfortable and having their main spots but our roles were really messed up and we had two conflicting styles of calling which made us very inconsistent. Nihilum dropped us two weeks before the ESL Cologne qualifiers and the timing couldn’t have been worse because it killed our motivation heading into the event knowing we had no organizational support afterwards.
After failing to qualify for ESL Cologne I felt really bad and I think it sparked the passion that I had throughout most of my career. Looking around at my options, it seemed obvious that Liquid was my first choice but I wasn’t sure they were going to make a roster change after the qualifier. Everyone assumed there would be a big roster shuffle but nobody really knew what teams were going to change players. Fortunately for me, an old teammate and longtime friend of mine, James, ended up landing a coaching role with Liquid. He called me on the phone and asked what my plans were, and if there happened to be a spot on Liquid would I take it. The answer was immediately yes, and since I wasn’t contracted to Nihilum anymore there were no problems to just make the switch.
I’ve been standing in with the Liquid guys for about 2-3 weeks now and I’m happy to be able to call these guys my teammates. In this process however, people have branded me as a greedy person and I would like to explain a little as to why there were delays in this happening. Firstly, I assure you I am not making “2.5x or more” than the other players on my team. Secondly, I have personal deals and sponsorships that need to be honored, so it was a very slow back and forth process to figure out how to handle everything. I also want to address the idea that I kill teams or cause unnecessary drama in my teams; I have always and will always value long lasting rosters over team hopping.
I know I have previously said big organizations are a bad thing for players and they usually don’t treat players well, but I have worked with both owners of Liquid and I believe I will be much happier here than I was in previous teams. There’s a certain level of transparency I believe an organization needs to have, and I think Liquid has gone above and beyond what I’ve experienced in the past. It seems to me that Liquid treats their players very fair, and I respect them a lot for doing so. My heart and passion is still with the game and there’s only one thing I want moving forward: A Championship Title. I am excited to see what we are able to achieve with having such a solid organization behind us and I cannot wait to prove all of the haters wrong.
Thank you for all of your continued support, I cannot wait to see what we can achieve under the Liquid brand!

After the move, Liquid now boast:

United States Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski
United States Nick "nitr0" Cannella
United States Jacob "FugLy" Medina
United States Spencer "Hiko" Martin

The team are participating in CEVO Professional Season 8, where they are currently sitting at first place with three wins and a tie. They will also soon clash with CLG in the PGL Season 1 North American bracket.

Hiko isnt a 'money whore'. He just dosen't want to join a team that dosen't have the same sponsors as he does. If you think Hiko is a so called 'money whore' you are fully retarded and haven't been in the CS sceen for a long time. Full video: youtube.com/watch?v=W03eMSXEN0I

i beg to differ as his previous actions and rumors surrounding him states otherwise. he obviously isn't disclosing what really happens in the backstage and i gotta admit he knows a thing or two of PR and damage control so he can be manipulative. if he was as candid as you sell him he would've joined Liquid along with ska back then as opposed to kill Liquid by stealing adren and nitr0. luckly for the former they decided not to leave. also, what's up this 'either go with the flow and worship hiko or be retard' stuff even mean? sorry but I LOL'd at that.

he tried to kill liquid and form a new "super team" along with ska adren nitr0 and possibly naf-fly. no one said anything but has been hinted that hiko didn't wanted to accept joining liquid because he wanted to be part of all future negotiations regarding sponsorships and salaries. just search on hltv and you'll know what happened later.

He doesn't need to, its a personality trade. Also he has a big fanbase that likes to know what is going on and having that fanbase in turn earns him more money, so why not put in that extra effort. Why do Lucasnoisettes have to ask questions without thinking first?

Hiko is a great addition. If Liquid weren't a contender before(I would argue they were), they definitely are now. Hiko adds a layer of skill and experience that is not easy to find in North America. Looking forward to seeing how things progress with the team.

see thats the thing right there. u think this roster change would change anything about the team. its hard to see what that would be though. hiko is not a strat caller. not at all in fact. he is the new guy in a team that already likes to think they are good. is he gonna be the one fixing the roles in the team? is he gonna take calling away from adren, who is absolute shit at it? is he gonna awp for them so that they'll have an awper that can compete with the best awpers in the world? nah man, hes just gonna play a similar role to what flowsick had, just with more skill (as flowsick admittedly was ultra shit). they wont be competing on big stages, thats just utopian thinking of NA fanboys.

i just cant see any of the massive problems they had which i could see and which were also outlined by other top players and analysts being fixed, bcs i have no reason to assume that, as hiko fits pretty well into flowsicks roles and he is the new guy in the team. hard to see how hes gonna stop nitro and elige from stats patting and adren from calling crappy.

Honestly, I think you exaggerate Liquid's problems in general(it's not as if they have been an absolute horrible team or something), but even if I don't believe that, your response to my post is rather curious anyway. My initial post said that Hiko adds skill and experience, and make Liquid better. You then accuse me of "uptopian fanboy thinking", which lord knows how you get from "Liquid could be more of a contender" to me thinking "The roster change will change anything about the team". You yourself admitted that Hiko does add a positive over flowsick, so in essence, you have already agreed to what I said. Regardless, to respond to what you are supposedly responding to what I said: As I noted, you are making plenty of assumptions in saying they won't contend. And your reason for those assumptions is another assumption: that they won't change anything except for swapping Hiko in for Flowsick simply because they had the same roll and such. I don't see why I should accept this as true. Who is to say that the team will not change at all, if the supposed problems you have pointed out persist? It's one thing to not want to assume something, but in order to believe what you do, you have to make an assumption. That assumption being that they will be content due to the fact that Hiko thinks they are good and he fits into the missing role. I just as well could say that Hiko's additional experience could change the team positively. I don't find that to be any less rational than "he is the new guy in a team that already likes to think they are good".

well to be fair, ur post #159 makes it sound like u have really high hopes for the team and i cant see this happening. also ur saying mimi its not like theyve been absolute trash before.. uhhm, what? they could even qualify for eepl against crappy NA competition. every time they went to lan, especially against euros, they got completely smashed. and all that for one of the best paid teams in the world, with 3 big NA talents on the roster and a very well known streaming and yt personality in adren, who releases tons of great stuff about csgo, but cant get his shit together in the actual game? they were absolute trash. hiko adds more skill, but its not like flowsick was an inexperienced player. and hiko has a very defined playstyle, that fits into flowsicks roles quite well. as for the new guy thing what i mean is that it may be hard for him to just come in and change a bunch of stuff that he doesnt agree with. lets be real here: he joined liquid bcs he cant bank on the hope that there will be a team with ex ibp in january and even if so, that would be next season, not this one. besides that he has no othr options.

I hope they play well, that's a lot different from thinking that they will play well. And you not being able to see it as a possibility is completely different from it not being a possibility. Sure, they've played poorly before. But they at one point were basically considered the second best team behind Cloud9. They were often tier toughest opponent. They've had problems internationally no doubt, but I would hardly say that overall, they have been completely awful. But let's move away from what is surely to become semantics. I see what you are saying about Hiko fitting in well and all, but I think it is an assumption to say that they will simply play the same way plus Hiko. He joined Liquid because they give him the best chance to win right now, outside of getting into Cloud9 somehow.

Not really much reason to say Hiko has toxic. I really don't understand how anyone can say that from his tenure with C9 and Nihilum.

Hiko addresses the "FAQ" and tension that the CS community has draped over him. I was beginning to lose support for the guy but realize he was not being shady after all. This team looks very strong, especially with EliGe not reaching his full potential. There's a lot of brains on this team, and I would go so far as to say they're smart enough to anti-strat against C9 and top EU teams.

Yeah, I actually don't know if they will live up to potential but when I look at this team on paper I see a lot of firepower in the likes of nitro, elige, and hiko. I've also always thought fugly was pretty good and will play a good anchor role if the starpower can step up around him. I think adren has underperformed immensely as botg a fragger and igl considering he actually does have a mind for the game. The thing is even before hiko I thought this team looked good on paper, but they have continuously not only underperformed but completely embarassed themselves especially outside of the u.s. I dont know if hiko will have a huge impact on their form as a team, but I'd like to think they could do some damage. I'd really love to see nitr0 embrace the role of a fearless entry fragger... I don't want to see him awping.

I've said this before in an answer to Thorin, who said a similar thing. This is a statement, not actual content, and quotes from full statements rarely mean much without context. Not sure what the fuss is about. If this was actual content, sure, it would be very ill-mannered and plagiaristic, statements are a completely different thing in my opinion.

Congratulations Liquid and to Hiko. :) While I would have been surprised if the try-out period (read: negotiations), had resulted in Hiko not coming on-board, I'm glad it's official and all the details have been ironed out. Now? Solid #2 or 3. Possibly, #2. The only piece they may need yet is a top-level awper like PTR and they could be #1. They already were competitive against C9. This makes them a hair more competitive. If there's any team that may be nervous about this, it's probably CLG. The two are basically even now.

If AdreN only awp. and nobody else picks up the awp, then liquid can actually be top 1 NA.

hiko is really really manipulative and can be a totally different kind of person than he leads on. once and a while (vary rarely) his true personality comes out when hes streaming and its not nice at all. I have come to notice hiko is a very fake person and I would never want to be on a team with him.
