Group A: VP electric, NiP humble C9

Virtus.pro have topped group A at the ESL ESEA Dubai Invitational, defeating EnVyUs 16-7 on de_cache, while NiP eliminate Cloud9 from the tournament, winning 19-16 on de_dust2.

The winners' and losers' matches of Group A of the ESL ESEA Dubai Invitational finally saw the production go live from Dubai itself, with players relocating to the outdoor stages with the city's skyline as the scenic backdrop for the in-server action.

Virtus.pro kicked off the plow immediately on de_cache, where the Poles began as T-side against the renowned CT defensive play of EnVyUs. Unfortunately for the Frenchmen however, they could find no response to VP's extreme aggression, with Filip "NEO" Kubski and Paweł "byali" Bieliński in particular making strong plays.

byali has been red-hot in Dubai, having only been fazed by smoke machines apparently

Finishing the half at a shocking 15-0 scoreline for Virtus.pro, the game saw EnVyUs make a brief resurgence on their T side, where the Boys in Blue picked up seven rounds.

But it came too little, too late and Virtus.pro finally managed to defend an A-site take, winning the map 16-7 and advancing into the semifinal, with a guanrateed minimum of $25,000 in prize money assured.

In the losers' match, the Canadian-Americans of Cloud9 took on the Swedish-Finn composition that is NiP on de_dust2.

The first half saw Cloud9 mostly in the driver's seat, with Mike "shroud" Grzesiek winning a crucial clutch on an important gun round after NiP began to rally with a four round comeback. C9 finished the half in the lead at 9-6.

NiP punished Cloud9 for sloppy play on the second pistol, and successfully won the pistol. An equally sloppy rush onto B by the Ninjas in the next round brought them into the clutches of Sean "seang@res" Gares' Five-Seven, giving the American IGL an all-important 3K. As a result, NiP failed their anti-eco and had their economy reset.

NiP survive the losers' match, but it wasn't pretty

Cloud9 continued the lead on CT, and the 21st round saw NiP unable to hold a B-site take, with Adam "friberg" Friberg accidentally killing a teammate in a two-versus-two. NiP rallied in the next round, fortuitous for the Ninjas as Cloud9's economy was weak and forced the North American team onto a double save.

The crucial 25th round saw both teams with full equipment and Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert gave his teammates some hope with an early double kill, allowing C9 to go up 14-11. NiP clawed their way back into the game on the next round, bringing the score eventually to 14-13.

One of the most bizarre retakes of 2015 followed in the next round, with Cloud9 having five members and failing to hastily gain control against three NiP players on catwalk, thus losing the round and giving NiP the momentum to gain match point.

Cloud9 somehow survived the final round of the game, forcing overtime. The North Americans won the first round of OT despite Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund picking up a vital 3K. The name of the game continued to be C9's lack of coordination on CT and GeT_RiGhT warming up to levels of yore, as NiP took the last two rounds of the first half.

On the second half of overtime, NiP star GeT_RiGhT once again helped his team shut down Cloud9, giving the Ninjas the match victory at 19-16.

I'v seen NiP do that as well. The thing is that when you are alone as CT on A, you are lucky of you get 1 kill and you will always die. So i guess they where more confident in falling back, regrouping and retaking when they had more ppl alive. The problem was that unlike t-side they didnt use nades to retake it.

The bigger problem with that retake is how slowly they did it imo, they could have literally used someone going '3,2,1' in TS and it would have looked better

Yeah the problem was why they left Ska alone on A when they had 5 man? Who was his partner on A bombsite who jumped and rotated to CTB for no reason? Obviously BOTazoid.

pretty questionable moves from sgares opting to go for VERY LATE retakes in 5v3 and not pushing anywhere on the map . freakazoid is literally sitting in a corner hoping for someone not checking it to get a kill ( ps.dead weight) n0thing has no impact on the game shroud got flushed out of long too soon and sometimes even backed away a couple of times from long leaving it completely empty thus getting pincered from short which makes me really question his ingame awareness and consequences of his actions as a whole on the game . That A bombsite was catastrophic for c9 in all ways skadoodle is the only light in this team but he can only do so much . nothing to take away from NIP but c9 lost that game for themselves and GTR beasted through their mistakes and non-existent teamwork

Your analysis is a bit overkill, but your right in many ways. It feels like they where afraid of giving up easy kills to Nip and it feels like they did something they had talked about to close out game (they have been bad at that before esp. dust2 vs fnatic). They had a good idea in mind, but clearly didn't know how to play in that style vs nip.

2 rounds where sean pushed B and got that info , but the problem is they COMPLETELY gave A to nip so I don't understand if it's sheer stupidity not to fight for it or wait for seangares on the long flank from behind which had no effect on the outcome of the round. They had really questionable calls

It's a bit overkill because I enjoyed watching the map , vintage f0rest and GTR , Ska on form . It was very entertaining to watch but in this style that c9 is adopting it clearly isn't working out . and in particular , I don't get how they even play this map at all if they don't know how to back each other up properly . Many a times you see people not getting traded and stuck in these spots where it's do or die and generally it's death for them

I just dont understand why they didnt play A like the other teams. Rush long at the beginning with 3 people. 1 controlling long while ska is at car with the AWP. They did that like 1 or 2 times but because they failed they went into full passive mode. Seangares absolutely had no clue (except for holding B), NiP wasn't even doing anything special.

That is vintage shroud. Even lurkers marvel at his passiveness. I used to think perhaps he wasn't being put in the right positions, but its really all on him. Any time he has a chance to be aggressive or make a play, he will hesitate 9 out of 10 times. Insane aim and reactions, but severely lacking game sense.

Freak's role on CT side, much like the others, isn't very well flushed out at all. You have to wonder how much time they even spend on working CT setups. If they don't have strong T sides, then its game over. sgares has done extremely well utilizing freak on T sides, but not much else.

Lol, n0thing held an early round mid push single-handedly and him and sgares held B effectively throughout the CT side. Sure he struggled in retaking A but c9 lost CT side because of a lackluster cat hold. Although skadoodle got a few opening kills early in the round, he couldn't hold cat effectively when they made the execute push. I do agree they should have contested A in those 5v3 and 3v3 rounds before NIP got the bomb down

part of the problem was shroud being drawn out of long way too early and so SKA can't effectively hold cat from bombsite or car . so he is put in a position where it is a must he retreats to ct or just full on peek short which he did and may or may not get one kill but never a multikill .

Can anyone please explain to me wtf happened at A on D2? I dont even remember what round it was but they were up 5-3 players on NIP, Ska Was holding long after what I think was a double, then he totally gave up long, went ct spawn, and NIP went right up cat, planted and killed the remaining members of C9. He had the angle to hold long/cat, they could have had whoever was CT hold cat from connector. Instead they all funneled through long or cat to retake. Is this a case of them reaaaaally trying to seem clever, look at our starts no one has used before? An MG wouldn't do that shit.

Two reasons why NiP won this game: 1) GTR playing at his best 2) Cloud9 playing at their worst Re-play this match and C9 will win it 7 times out of 10. I don't think this win was any good for NiP, it would be better to be white-washed and force changes. Relying on GTR carrying with close to 40-bombs every match won't work. Sucks for C9, I like to watch them play and I hope they aren't too bummed out by this loss.

Would hardly describe it as solid. NiP shouldn't take solace from this win either. They made some pretty glaring mistakes themselves, and if it wasn't for GTR going berserk, this map wouldn't have been close. That was some of the worst CS I've seen, from both sides.

usual game from shroud, got his highlight round to satiate his fanboys, but did nothing else all game, except feeding off ecos.

remove allu already. He won one important duel against skadoodle, but missed i counted atleast 4 easy shots that pretty much cost them the game. And this has been going on for ages, still NiP staff/allu fans only want to see his highlights...

Its gonna be a problem if nip goes far, f**k, needed them to lose and its a problem for them that they didnt get eliminated..... Now if they somehow win tomorrow's match they will probably keep the same roster :( and its a waste of their own time to keep trying to keep the long time rusted engine running for a long period of time. Gotta stop putting bandaids.............I want them to become consistent and if they were to get eliminated by c9 there would be more chances of them swapping a player or two and thus possibly make something more consistent and better but since it didnt happen and unles they lose tomorrow they might keep on struggling keeping the same roster in the long run but in any case gl to them i guess if they go far - well, good for them.

sick T side from vp. pretty weak play from NIP, but it's not cause of allu only, imo.

I think c9 is more overrated, they had a few good tournaments where they choked in finals and just like all US teams in CSGO, haven't adjusted to stay relevant and get figured out and poof, no more good results

All their players are overrated because of twitch and streams. If you are a youtube sub to some cs channels, and even on reddit, you constantly see 'INSANE CLUTCHES BY Hiko/shroud/n0thing... whatever' against a bunch of nobodies. Freakazoid is honestly awful and skadoodle is nowhere near a top 5 awper let alone the best. NA will never learn. Less time streaming and more time watching Euros play, learning from them, and practicing as a team. Cant blame them tho, they make a shitton of money. Also they have the best condition out of all teams. They are constantly on bootcamps and arrive very early to these tournaments. VP only flew to Dubai yesterday, i think this is the 2nd/3rd day of C9 in there
