NiP, CLG bag wins in Cluj

Ninjas in Pyjamas and CLG kept their playoff hopes alive at DreamHack Open Cluj-Napoca after beating Team Liquid and dignitas, respectively.

The Lower Bracket match of the so-called 'Group of Death' saw Ninjas in Pyjamas desperately try to avoid elimination following a surprise defeat against Titan on the first day of the event. The Swedes' opponent was Team Liquid, who had given a good account of themselves on Wednesday, when they took the game against Virtus.pro to overtime.

The North American team were looking to repeat Cloud9's feat and they got off to a good start in the match, picking up the pistol round and the following anti-ecos to start off the game with a 3-0 lead. Double kills from Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg and Adam "friberg" Friberg in the gun round then allowed NiP to pull back, and the Swedes embarked on a fantastic run that saw the scoreline bloom to 6-3 in their favor. An impressive quad kill with the AWP from Eric "adreN" Hoag put a stop to NiP's winning streak, but the Swedes regained control of the game immediately after and took a 10-5 half-time lead.

f0rest showed glimpses of his old shape against Liquid

In the second half, the pistol round went back and forth before Nick "nitr0" Cannella took matters into his own hands and pulled off a triple kill to put Liquid back in the game. After winning the two anti-ecos, the North American side also claimed the first gun round to tie the game up at 10 rounds. The threat of a reverse sweep was looming, but NiP picked themselves up and won a series of rounds in a row to seal a 16-11 success.

The following match also involved a North American side, this time CLG, who were up against the new dignitas roster on... de_cobblestone. A strong start from CLG on the Terrorist side of the map saw them take the opening four rounds, but then Philip "aizy" Aistrup handed dignitas their first round on a silver platter with four kills with the Desert Eagle.

CLG, however, refused to let their foot off the gas and continued their dominant display, forcing dignitas to call a timeout at 2-9, when the game was starting to get out of control. The Danes used the timeout to draw up a new strategy, and the move paid off as they closed the gap to just three rounds at the end of the half.

CLG are still in the race for a playoff spot

CLG grew this lead in the second half thanks to a quad kill by Tarik "tarik" Celik in the pistol round, but the North American side were unable to build on this win as they fell short in the first anti-eco round. dignitas went on to add two more rounds to their tally, bringing the scoreline to 9-10, but then CLG regained control of the game and won four rounds straight. Many certainly believed that the game was almost over, but dignitas showed their fighting spirit and equalised the game at 14-14, only to fall at the final hurdle as CLG bagged the final two rounds.
