Pro League relegation rules changed

ESEA has announced changes to the relegation system that is in place in the ESL ESEA Pro League.

The second edition of the ESL ESEA Pro League will come to an end on December 13 with the season finals, which will be held inside ESL's studios in Burbank, Los Angeles.

Last season, the bottom placed side from the Pro League automatically moved down to ESEA Premier, whose champion secured a spot in the $250,000 competition.

This season, however, the relegation system comes with a twist: while the team who finishes last in the Pro League is still relegated, their spot will not necessarily be taken by the winner of the Premier division. Instead, ESEA and ESL may choose a wildcard team to replace the relegated side.

ESL and ESEA make changes to the Pro League relegation system

The relegation stage continues, this time seeing the teams ranked tenth and eleventh in the Pro League face the first and the second non-moved up finishers from the Premier division.

The following steps will comprise the ESL ESEA Pro League relegation system from now on:

  • A team is added to the Pro League to replace the auto-relegated side. Either it is manually invited by the league administration or it is promoted from the Premier division due to winning the competition.
  • 10th ranked Pro League team relegation match vs. Premier Division second non-moved up place
  • 11th ranked Pro League team relegation match vs. Premier Division first non-moved up place

Why give a wildcard team entrance to the Pro League, when the first place of Premier deserves to be in the Pro League, but still isn't certain about their spot?

This changing of rules was completely expected and this new ruling will be called... "The Renegade Rule". Still dislike the fact they get instantly put into invite and don't play a Bo3 against either a relegated team or a top-placing premier team. Fucking shame for the Premier teams who get screwed over by this. Edit: Other than their Katowice 2015 qualifier and GFinity, I don't think Renegades have built up enough of a resume (i.e., wins) to justify bypassing the tried and true process.

I actually think Games Academy would be a better choice for "invite" at this moment. They were committed to NACS long before this announcement, never complained, and have been cleaning up in ESEA-M/CEVO-M, and when they do play invite teams they look quite impressive.

RNG aren't bad either. There most result result is a tight bo3 loss to VP 16-14 on the last map. Could GA do that? nahh

Keyd/LG got the same treatment and people didn't really care although that was when ESEA was changing from an invite league to a professional (relegation and moveup/downs) league I think there should be a qualification tournament with the bottom 3 invite teams, top 3 premier teams, and two invited teams competing for three spots... that way international teams moving in could be invited, or if there aren't any more invite/premier teams
2015-11-03 23:36

People didn't care for a reason... when they expanded the league there weren't enough good teams in Premier to move up to invite (which is why Method was moved up). And SKDC, who were relegated, were effectively dead at the time. I do agree that the format isn't ideal though.

This is so hypocritical. They wouldn't even put GA in Premier and told them they had to work their way up from main like everyone else. Then Renegades comes along and they change the rules for them. It will take at least 2 seasons total for GA to work their way up and Renegades has to do absolutely nothing at all.

I would like to know what criteria will be used in case this rule is applied here in NA next season. I know everyone says Renegades are a shoe in... but really would like it if my team (GA or Games Academy) was at least considered for this as when we moved over we were told we'd have to move through the ranks and were put in Main. Not trying to bitch about it, just actually asking a question to see if we could be considered for this depending on the criteria.

same thing happened in the premier league of womens football in the UK when manchester city decided they wanted a womens team. they just got to go straight in at top level and one of the other teams (either bristol or bournemouth) were relegated just to make space for man city. its not fair that the bigger teams can just do things like that, they should have to grind the way up like every fucker else :/
