RGN: "Neither team is to blame"

HLTV.org spoke with RGN's CEO Matt "dayV1D" David to get his statement on the controversy which unfolded between Liquid and Luminosity in the RGN Pro Series Upper Bracket semifinal.

Controversy was never far from the corner at the RGN Pro Series, following two days of delays and technical issues. However, the latest episode took place during the Upper Bracket semifinal when a volunteer photographer accidentally cut off power to one of Luminosity's players' computers.

The rule specified that as soon as action in the round took place, whether damage, shooting, or kills, the round is live and cannot be restarted, however there was an expectation Liquid might restart out of mercy.

The two teams then met and passions rose, which continued beyond the game as both teams refused to shake hands after the game ended.

HLTV.org is looking to piece together opinions of all involved to give the best possible picture of what transpired. Since both teams are playing straight after this, we first went to RGN's CEO Matt "dayV1D" David to hear his take on the situation.

Tell me about the situation and specifically, the rule that governed what happened following the disconnect?

The rule has been for many LANs if a player disconnects whether through computer or internet shutoff, if there has been action i.e. damage or kills, then the round can't be reset. The round counts, no matter what the outcome is and whether the advantaged or disadvantaged team wins that round.

How was the rule explained and/or what transpired after that?

The admins said that the round can't be reset because the round went live. Luminosity was upset about that which is understandable considering the circumstances over why they were disconnected.

They came upstairs to talk because they had a problem with the issue and they were asking Hiko and Liquid to restart, which is fair play technically, but the admin maintained that the round can't be restarted.

And what do you think about that decision?

I agree with the decision because even if Hiko and them wanted to restart, that gets into bias and morale. That sets a precedent for players disconnecting their own power cables and claiming that someone else did it.

While of course with Luminosity the situation was a total accident, but I still firmly believe that the rule stands because it needs to be there to avoid a slippery slope.

Do you think the further delays later on in map two exacerbated the situation?

No, that discussion was calm and it was just related to War Mod crashing. We had to restore money manually and the admins did match medicing which both teams found acceptable.

Then why is there such a strong and controversial situation as there is now?

Because Luminosity thought that if Liquid had wanted to say yes to a restart, then it would have happened. But I maintain that the rule states that you can't reset it.

So I believe that Luminosity is placing the blame on Liquid due to unfortunate circumstances and because of all that negative tension from Luminosity's fans and the players' remarks, Liquid is responding back and defending themselves because they were just following the rules.

Do you think the admins did their job perfectly though?

In terms of the ruling, it was correct and the job was done correctly. But what we should have done moving forward is obviously roping off the area where the photographer was as well as not letting Luminosity come upstairs to talk to Hiko and Liquid. Because that led to the misunderstanding and the issue.

LG thought we were giving Liquid the choice whereas in reality we and they had to follow the rules, the ones that have been done at all LANs.

Any further words on the issue?

Neither team is to blame, it was an unfortunate accident, and tensions are high due to delays at the rest of the event and I just think that if we all work together we can have a great event moving forward.

My staff is going 110% and we can crank these matches out going forward. Neither team was to blame, stress levels were high, and it was out of either teams' control so they feel like they were both kind of robbed.

We plan to catch both Luminosity and Liquid following their upcoming matches (assuming the teams are willing) to try and get statements from both sides on the disagreement.

did you even read it, no one made a decision, the round would have still counted as a loss for LG even if both teams asked for a replay since it's in the rules that they can't.

right, the admins could have. but they decided otherwise. so don't blame it on the players. you also don't blame the players in football for wrong ref decision like offside or not given hands...

yeah, this is not a very well thought-out rule. i don't see how players disconnecting their own power is any more likely than teams paying a third-party to "accidentally" trip over and disconnect the power of their enemies. both extremely unlikely, but basing your rules around the first situation is incredibly dumb - especially when, as we've seen MULTIPLE times in previous LANs, players are far more likely to have computer issues (game crashes, etc.).

that's just plain wrong, though. how many times have we seen players intentionally restart their PCs/disconnect their power to replay a round? i've seen 0. how many times have we seen players have computer issues causing them to drop from the game? dozens, at least. e: and you realise the current rules can be abused like i wrote in my previous post, right? sure, it might not be likely, but neither is a player intentionally disconnecting their own power.

hasn't happened, probably won't happen in any major LAN. and it's not that difficult to monitor the players to ensure they don't do anything like that. what does happen is shit PCs crashing, VAC errors, people tripping over power cords, etc.

Then why is there such a strong and controversial situation as there is now? Because Luminosity thought that if Liquid had wanted to say yes to a restart, then it would have happened. But I maintain that the rule states that you can't reset it. LG thought we were giving Liquid the choice whereas in reality we and they had to follow the rules, the ones that have been done at all LANs. All that crying and fighting for nothing. I wonder if LG players regret their childish tweets now??

I dont know why all that crying in here... Its simple... go to hiko's sponsor's twitter and flood it about what hiko did and the lack of fairplay. He'll probably get a kick of the team or a penalty of its income. His image as a gamer is everything to him. Also, for the sponsors. The list of the Liquid's sponsors: HyperX, G2A, HTC, Razer.

Not really though... If he'd choosen for the fairplay by that i mean offered himself to do it... I'd be different but he did the just opposite sice the begining of the fact (in game is just said something about its live) and when he got asked he again denied to do the fairplay decision.

"That sets a precedent for players disconnecting their own power cables and claiming that someone else did it." so i guess the solution is to get a friend to disconnect the enemy's power cables instead. apparently this is fair-play under these rules.

Well if they had won that round and everything else played out the same they would have won 2-0 wouldn't they have? Honestly it is pretty natural to be on tilt when the lan is run by dumbasses like this Matt "dayV1D" David person who won't even let rounds be replayed if both teams agree to it.

unfortunately Brazilian culture is so uncivilized and uneducated that not only will they not be able to understand that it wasn't hiko's decision, they will continue to freak out and probably send hiko death threats. this is why the 3rd world shouldnt be allowed to play in america. They don't deserve it yet. This reflects extremely poorly on the entire brazilian community especially LG and their "passion"

Honestly I find very difficult to agree with Liquid. They were clearly making an exception for the rule by asking Liquid if they want to replay and they said no. If Liquid agreed with the replay a rule would be broken and wouldn't be a big deal. It was a case that Fairplay > Rules and it was all on Liquid's hand.

Yeah but conversely you could just kick off your power if you were losing the round. Also, non-autistic adults (so basically the polar opposite of you, a teenager with asperger's syndrome who isnt properly medicated due to the poor medical system in his country) wont just pull the plug on a team cuz they dont like them. its just a game lmao.

Who...taught...you...to...type...like...this... Seriously, the internet is all about slimming things down and expressing things in the fastest way possible, so people usually remove punctuation instead maximizing keypresses. Anyways, it's much easier to sabotage yourself and claim an issue than to just go up and shut off someone else's computer. You could literally just have "issues" every time you have a man disadvantage in a round. This is like the CSGL rule where bets aren't cancelled if someone gets DDOSed. Otherwise, everyone would just max bet on themselves every match and if they were about to lose, they would claim to have a sudden internet problem that must be from DDOS.

Everyone's saying Liquid should've restart, but a restart is unfair to Liquid? 4v4 is advantage t side, so Liquid was winning that round. Anyway whoever has advantage doesn't matter as the RGN CEO states. If this rule didn't exist people could just intentionally drop when they are losing a round, and call for restart.

I'm American and literally have no context from either of the team and even I can tell that admins were being loose and might've looked the other way if both teams agreed on the restart. Hey if Liquid had a good reputation I could've ignored this, and said it happens. But Liquid's done fucked up. Bad sportsmanship with a bad rep is gonna be anyone's down fall. Yes, the organization acted properly. The attitude of the round should restart from Hiko, fair play. When the rules benefit a team and this team realizes that it is unfair, it should have the attitude of fix, it is beneficial to the sport and the public watching

Yes, i agree, Liquid played best other maps and deserved to win. But Hiko treated Fallen aggressively when he was explaining what happened and ask for fair play on the part of Liquid, that was spoken by who was on the scene and saw. That's the point, the negative attitude of Hiko and not the round itself.

I didn't know how it was handled that is pretty shitty on his part. He could just be like we choose not to replay the round sorry guys.

The only error was to blame for the organization that made the photographer approaching pcs, LG did not lose because of that the MD3 match because even made 9-2 on dust2 and lost. About Hiko, he acted within the rules however it was a terrible attitude for a professional player, he knew that a third turned off the pc Fer and had no manhood to restart the round.

when other players get kicked from the game because of vac authentication error or have pc issues mid round then do NOT play it again. Dunno why i should be different for LG, since other teams like VP, Fnatic, TSM, nV, NaVi and so on deals with that shit quite often. And blaiming a team for following the rules is just plain retarded. Also was any of the liquid haters/LG fanboys there at the Lan? Just because one guy posted something on twitter doesn't mean its 100% true. The statement does say "LG thought we were giving Liquid the choice whereas in reality we and they had to follow the rules, the ones that have been done at all LANs."
