Liquid: "Players should not decide"

HLTV.org was in contact with Liquid's co-owner Steve Arhancet to hear the American organisation's side of the story.

The final piece of the puzzle concerning the controversy which erupted between Liquid and Luminosity in the RGN Pro Series Upper Bracket semifinal concerning a decision to not replay a round is now complete as Liquid have reached out to HLTV.org to give their statement on the situation.

To that effect, HLTV.org spoke with Liquid's co-owner Steve Arhancet, as the teams' players have apparently received an outburst of condemnation online and are not comfortable with giving public statements at this time.

"I'm Steve, co-owner for Team Liquid.

I unfortunately was not attending the RGN event, however based on my conversations with both the owner of RGN, David and Hiko here are my thoughts on the matter.

A volunteer was on the stage of the event during a live match between Luminosity and Team Liquid. This volunteer should not have been on stage, as I understand he had no substantial purpose for being there.

For me, this is the first mistake made by RGN that could have prevented this situation from happening. However, once the power was cut out during the match, the RGN officials/staff should have then made a clear decision, based on their rules or judgement in the situation on how to proceed.

Instead a member of their staff decided to defer to players to make a decision for them on how to run their tournament.

I think this puts any player in a morally compromised position with no real positive outcome. I believe it was unprofessional for the RGN staff to act in the manner they did.

I have no ill feelings to Luminosity, their organization or players. I respect Steve, their owner and the great things he's done for his team. I hope that the next time we play each other we'll be able to do so where issues like these won't be a factor," Arhancet told HLTV.org.

As the situation has apparently relaxed relating to the two teams involved, it is now Liquid who are taking on Renegades in the consolidation final on the main stage of the RGN Pro Series.

But liquid already got the advantage, so I understand them. AND this is a competition, they wanna win, not do "fair play". Did you ever play competitive sports? Well I guess you were either bad in it, or didn't care about fair play as well. Fair play belongs to fun games, it's not necessary to competitive play.

Not true, "Liquid did not want to replay it, if Liquid had said yes to replaying it, it would have been restarted which is in the CEVO rules. They had that choice. So the statement that 'we had no choice' [from RGN] was incorrect and misinformed and he [Matt David, RGN's CEO] apologised to me afterwards." - taken from the previous news "Liquid had the choice"

but if they would've chosen the fair option then this would never be fixed until there's some actual upcoming actual unfair team, that will abuse the rules. but from what i know, someone from the event turned off the players monitor or smthn which is unfair. i think they could've instantly paused. as shitty as it is, saw that a lot in 1.6 like the famous clip where f0rest 1 taps someone in dust 2 to pit, after unpause and them staring at each other

yea.. but for me on f.e. iBuyPowerr cup i saw LG "crushing" Liquid, or maybe not curhsing but 2-0ing Liquid and then they lost me 150eu... and they dont do very well atm against teams which are ranking wise (and in ppls personal rankings) a far step behind them

for me LG has to -steel +fnx .. they need a change like zqks back than... see what came out? coldz... their best player atm... a young very promissing talent... why not change the other "low" player on the team (which he always was too back then with zkqs) and give a fnx (hen1 is sadly main awp like fallen) a try... and work on the tactical spirit... sometimes fallen plays a yolo style in important rounds where i can just facepalm.... even JW often didn't do that in those rounds because if LG wanna compete for top1 NA / Top1 outside EU than they need a stronger player than steel (mid round caller or not) but i dont see c9 (with swag when he gets unbaned) or liquid getting weaker, more likeley getting stronger

Steel is weak aimwise but he does a lot of clutches and he is very smart playing the lurk role. For me yes, fnx not only did a lot in 1.6 but he also is the best player in GA. Even when cold played alongside him it was more common to see fnx topfragging and clutching than cold. But fnx is an entry, as far as I know he never played the lurk role. Fnx should take the place of boltz, that IS NOT BAD AT ALL, but it is not a superstar material aswell

maybe switch up the rolse and let boltz lurk or try something new... with coldz, fer and fnx they surely would have great rifle power... with a good-day-form fallen the have a great awp, and maybe they can switch up boltz to a some sort of lukring style they would be maybe better than now.. but ok i am not a bra csgo pro scene expert myself... just thinking loud

Well, past is in the past. But let put the facts straight here. 1- Luminosity did that countless times in different tournaments in NA to different teams, even against EnvyUs in the major in the close game that they had. most of the teams would replay, as jdm64 stated - twitter.com/JDM64CSGO/status/66713810509.. 2- Owner of LG post, it was NOT IN THE RULES as ppl are stating - makes sense: twitter.com/LG_Buuyyaakkaa/status/667115.. 3- If you are not replaying it, AT LEAST DONT KILL THE OTHER TEAM WHEN THEY ARE AFK TRYING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. 4- Camila, wife of LG's manager, made a periscope between the matches and she said that LG guys were super angry mostly because when they went to ask Liquid they not only didnt want to replay but Hiko was VERY DISRESPECTFUL, talking ironically and saying shit to FalleN. 5- Even tho Cold was hating Hiko at that time and Hiko is a scumbag, he should not offend Hiko on his twitter account

Every invite player knows that once kills has been exchanged and damage dealt the round is played out. It is because you can't pause the game DURING the round, only after or before. This rule is implemented in ESEA and CEVO for years already. Most LANs has the same rules. Who the fuck afks to fix the problem when the match is live. Even kids in the open league knows this.

Its a LAN, and in LAN it happens to replay due to circumstances. twitter.com/JDM64CSGO/status/66713810509.. LG replayed a bunch of lan games against NA teams in similar situations, against envyUs in the major aswell. Fnatic, EnvyUs and TSM already did it aswell. And buddy, they have the option to deny the replay, it is not "fairplay" but it isnt wrong aswell, I never said it. But Hiko being so disrespectful towards FalleN that is always a nice guy start the hatetrain. Killing them afk instead of pausing to answer and playing it aswell. They are not wrong, the admins should decide, not them. But it looks bad and Hiko was a giant fat spoiled pink baby

Stop trying to explain this to Americans they only know how their scumbag players do it, any EU team will replay the round if something like that happened in their game I think we have enough examples of that already and btw these teams did replay the round with more prize money than 30k on the line which makes Liquid look even more scumbag like the smallest prize pot of every tournament they went to this year and they looking desperate af to win something cause they'll never be on C9s level.

Oh my god finally someone showing some common sense. Hltv kids keep repeating "read the rules" like dumb fucks, even after LG owner and Liquid co-owner already admitted Team Liquid HAD THE OPTION to replay that round or not. This only shows how much people here do not care AT ALL about doing the right thing, they only want to protect and advocate for the Team they like most, even when they know they're wrong. Fckin douchebags.

Hiko twisted the rule to his preference they didn't have any advantage in that round no where can I find a ruling that says if a player is still alive in the round with low hp it counts as an advantage for the other team this is something Americans made up if you can find a ruling on that please post here I would love to see it. Edit: Ruling is if damage has been done in the round (players dead) or bomb planted the round will remain live if a computer malfunction happens (hardware issues) apparently some volunteer pulling your power cable is considered a hardware issue in NA, Liquid probably paid this guy to do this cause it was a crucial round 11-12 who ever lost the round was about to go on ECO. Stop trying to twist shit the admin already apologized for being an incompetent dickhead.

IF THERE ARE FUCKING RULES, ADMINS SHOULD ENFORCE THEM, THERE IS NO FUCKING CHOOSE OPTION IN THEM, JUST FUCKING GET OVER IT YOU DUMBCUNT, ROUND WAS NOT GONNA BE REPLAYED AT THAT POINT EVEN IF NONE FROM LIQUID HAD ANY SAY IN IT. A photographer of the event shut down fer's PC by kicking it not on purpose in the middle of the round. The round was 4x4, the rules say that if a PC malfunctions and there is a kill already in the round, the round counts. But it wasnt malfunction, it was the staff of this NA event that shut the PC down, so the admins told luminosity to ask liquid. When they were afk Liquid kill them all and said that they dont want to replay Camila, LG managers wife, told in the periscope that Hiko was really disrespectful towards FalleN in this conversation aswell. Cold made a mad twit calling Hiko stupid afterwards. Drama all over hltv.

They were playing a round on inferno, Liquid was T and LG was CT. It was a 4v4 and one player on LG had 10hp, when a photographer accidentally turned of fer's computer. The rules state that if a computer malfunction occurs after kills have been exchanged, then there was no obligation to replay the round. What occured wasn't exactly a computer malfunction but they treated it the same way. Because of that, the round would be replayed only if both teams agreed to it. Hiko didn't want to replay it presumably because he thought his team had the advantage that round. Now Liquid's getting death threats from angry Brazilians.

That's what happens when someone can't have fair-play in a competion, that's really what this is all about. Ofc they are in their right to refuse to replay, but they can't expect people to like it, it was a stupid move tbh, only showed that they were really really scared, hell, LG replayed rounds like that, agains better opponents, with bigger prize pools. I think that says a lot about both team member's character

"I think this puts any player in a morally compromised position with no real positive outcome." ... Bullshit. If Liquid had chosen to replay the round, the forums would be flooded with posts worshipping Hiko and the rest of Liquid like a God. There would be just as much - if not more - positive attention as they have been getting negative attention. Lame excuse, shitty team and I hope they get put in the same situation as LG multiple time and teams they face refuse to replay rounds.

You are very misinformed. RGN in the first statment said no matter what there would be no replay and stand by that. What they were wrong about was that the lower ranking admins (who had no right, and it would not change anyway the rule) asked one of the LG players to ask TL for a replay. even if TL said yes it wouldn't have happend per say the head admin who made the final decision as to which was no.

RGN: "The admins said that the round can't be reset because the round went live." Liquid: " ... the RGN officials/staff should have then made a clear decision, based on their rules or judgement in the situation on how to proceed. Instead a member of their staff decided to defer to players to make a decision for them on how to run their tournament." RGN says the admins made a clear decision. Liquid says the admins left the choice to the players. Even if Liquid's choice would have been overruled, they could have shown good sportsmanship and said "sure, we can replay as long as it's ok for the admins". Everything comes back to Liquid's refusal of replaying the round. There's a huge difference in "we can't" and "we won't".

No you just rearrange words to fit that you dont like TL. All invite players know round is live it can not pause till end. LG just got up and went to admins they never told TL to stop or pause. They go to admins and protest as their right. TL finished that map and when challenged by LG (which was wrong should have been admin) said we wont cause of the rules of the match. Just cause TL knew rules and said no you make it out to be they said it just to win and not cause of rule set in plae for 8 years in CS games.

Nope, those are exact quotes of what was written in hltv's articles. No rearrangement, all copy paste. The only thing that is "rearranged" (to use your word) is the three punctuation marks in the beginning of Liquid's statement to point out that the quote is a part of a longer sentence. You could go back in the article and read the whole sentence yourself, though you will quickly notice that the quote is not taken out of context. Could also add this to further my point: LG: "Liquid did not want to replay it, if Liquid had said yes to replaying it, it would have been restarted which is in the CEVO rules. They had that choice. So the statement that 'we had no choice' [from RGN] was incorrect and misinformed and he [Matt David, RGN's CEO] apologised to me afterwards. " Where it says 'we had no choice', theres a link attached (see the article) that leads to RGN's statement on the matter that was published approx 3 hours before LG's response. So again, Liquid states the admins left it in the hands of the players, LG states the admins left it in the hands of the players, RGN states that the admins made the decisions based on a rule that later proved to be misinformed AND RGN's CEO apologized for it afterwards.

RGN made a mistake, when they put it to the players no doubt. They are obviously afraid of incurring the wrath of the community, like we see too often.. Get some clear rules and admins who have the balls to make hard decisions. In regards to Hikos decision I see no fault.. Perhaps it was not the morally correct choice, but if its within the bounds of the rules, people should get over it and stop whining.

This tournament was pure shit. This is also reflected in the fact that this match lasted almost 6 hours, due to multiple problems (wtf). A problem caused by a third party is definitely not a PC or network problem. I wouldn't hold anything against either team, but apparently Hiko not only didn't agree to a restart (which is completely acceptable and understandable), but was also a smug fuck about it, which is why Cold was chimping out. Shame on Cold for being a crybaby, but Hiko is just a cunt.

NA sportsmanship. If they would've agreed to replay that round, they probably would have gained some respect both from people watching CS, and from their opponent in LG. Man, I was rooting for Liquid to become the top1 NA team, but now I just see them as a bunch of losers. Too bad.

I love how there are people here that think competitive sports should function on some sort of a morality basis. If there's a rule that allows the players to decide. First of all, the rule is stupid but second, the player should always choose the option that benefits their team. It's a part of the profession. Not just CS but any sport. If the round had just begun and liquid simply refused to replay a 5v5 then you might be able to make a case but as it stands, no one should hold them morally responsible for refusing to give up the advantage they had already obtained in the round.

As I said in the other thread, based on the rules, I have no problem with Liquid's choice. If it's the case that they had an advantage in the round, then I see no issue with them not replaying it and throwing that advantage away. Also, I think LG should have definitely continued playing the round. No sense in throwing your hands up in defiance, that just adds to your opponent's advantage more.

A good thing to improve lan tournaments would be automatic pause the game in a middle of a round, if there are no players shooting each other. It's a exceptional rule just to cover situations like this. I don't blame Liquid for their decision, look football as an example, players don't admit if the refree makes a mistake in their favor, sometimes they even try to cheat. But I know LG would have agreed to restart the round.

And yet this is all a moot point and the better team won the BO3.

The better team lost the BO3 because of this. Otherwise it would've been 2-0 LG. But thats ok, winning like this can only take a team so far (not as far as a major quarter finals it seems).

You're retarded. This happened on the map (overpass) that Luminosity eventually won. Making the series 1-1. The better team, Liquid, eventually won the series legitimately 2-1. The decision literally had nothing to do with the fact that Liquid took two maps from Luminosity. That is the most frustrating aspect of this. All of the complete idiots that can't understand the simple fact that this did not impact the result of this series in anyway. If anything it gave Luminosity a brief bit of motive (anger) to overcome Liquid on a map they were getting hammered.

I thought they did it during inferno. Meh, anyway you cant assume that anger is entirely positive. We'll never know what would have happened if Hiko wasnt a cunt.

To all the butthurt braindead idiots (aka brazilians and 15 year old toxic hltv addicts and people who lost their bets) If in the World cup Neymar faults Schweinsteiger, the referee would most likely call it a fault. Its the 90th minute, and it is 2-1 to Brazil. If the referee makes the decision, its probably a penalty for Germany. However, the referee didn't see anything, so he walks up to Neymar and asks if he indeed made a fault. What does he answer ?

its the same kind of situation, just because its a different context, it doesnt change the fact that morally its the same situation, yet people handle it differently.

none the less its zero sportsmanship shown by hiko, i already saw a lot of matches where the player agreed to restart. but yeah, karma is a bitch, they got 2-0'd after this.

it is and it is sooooo much exaggerated. this shit happpens in real sports all the time, no1 gives a shit. when I played football I would do a fake flip 10/10 times if it would give my team a penalty. you dont give fucking Müller shit either if he scores a goal from a free-kick, that was given to Germany unjustified. no1 goes "omg but he should've kicked the ball to the side, lost all respect, germany toxic team confirmed", everyone will go and blame the referee for making a decision, which is his job. just like the admins should have made the decision here. but in esports most fans are some 14-18 year olds without life experience, looking to be outraged at the smallest thing, so they can whine their asses off on forums.

Its not the same thing. In your example what happened was a foul. The referee would never ask a player if he commited a foul. At RGN what happened wasnt a foul, the only way something of the same nature could happen in a football game is if they're playing at night and stadium lights go out, or if the ball exploded or something like that, maybe even better, a crazy fan jumps the field and grabs one of the goalkeepers. Can you guess what happens in those situations? Match is immediatly suspended until the problem is solved. What Liquid did was the equivalent of lights going out, everybody stopping playing, but one of the midfielders take advantage of the situation and immediatly shoots towards the enemy goal. Do rules cover it? Nope. Its a dick move? Yup.
