NiP sign THREAT as coach

NiP have completed the signing of Björn "THREAT" Pers, who will step into the team as a coach.

When NiP first announced that they would be presenting their lineup until the end of the year, it was unclear whether the lineup would feature a sixth man as coach as well.

Aftonbladet managed to get a hold of the full lineup, which eventually came true, as only Aleksi "⁠allu⁠" Jalli was replaced on the team by Winterfox's former player, Jacob "⁠pyth⁠" Mourujärvi.

The move was met with disagreement mostly, both on the community's part, as well as experts', who noted that none of NiP's issues in the past year have been fixed with such a change.

THREAT to coach NiP

It was not a complete lineup after all, as we can see Björn "⁠THREAT⁠" Pers come into the roster to coach the mostly-unchanged NiP lineup.

The Swede tried to break into the professional scene in CS:GO with a lineup signed by Team Acer which also featured Frej "⁠kHRYSTAL⁠" Sjöström and Christian "⁠Spitfire⁠" Schiölde. After less than three months the lineup disbanded due to THREAT moving to Japan for studies.

The veteran has had his fair share of success in Counter-Strike 1.6, where he represented teams like fnatic and Lemondogs and was widely regarded to be one of the greatest minds of modern CS.

think he will be a hybrid player as he's been up to point, thus using both the rifle and awp. when they played with fifflaren they didnt have an "awper" but instead fifflaren and f0rest both used it depending on T/CT and map. pyth can use the awp aswell

pyth cant awp lol. hes a rifle player. hes not skilled enough to awp even though we've seen him use it against shitty NA teams lmao, he'd just get rekt. f0rest is Nips only good person at awping now. but you're right about what you said, NiP are going back into their old ways, barely using the awp unless they really need it. no way they could allow someone like f0rest to play full time awper when hes one of the most explosive players with the rifle. plus ever since friberg's massive drop in skill through this year and last year, they need f0rest to get those entries onto sites.

all of these teams have / had more than one person capable of awping. in vp both snax and pasha could awp on ct, pasha usually awp on t, but currently it's mostly neo. on tsm everyone except xyp9x can awp, but mostly kerrigan does. they usually have cajunb awping from long a on dust, or device awping banana against deep smokes etc. on fnatic all of them can awp. it's not common for krimz but he did decently last tourney. olof and flusha sometimes awp more than jw does. dennis sometimes picked it up on g2, not sure if he will on fnatic. old envy used to have either shox, smithzz or happy pick it up. the cool thing about it is that you can maintain dynamic setup with the awp without having to rotate your awper and potentially leaving a site vulnerable.

THREAT is probably the 3rd best igl from Sweden so it is a really good choice. 1 cArn (nothing can compare to him and his achievements in fnatic) 2. Pronax (fnatic in CS GO and RAGE Gaming in 1.6) 3. THREAT (Lions/Winfakt as igl and fnatic as regular rifler in 1.6 aswell as a short time for Team Acer in CS GO).

Also, if you watched the VODs from the ESL tournaments where you could listen in to the teams comms, you could hear that they mostly spoke Swedish, and Allu was speaking English, that's hardly a problem.

Threat was decent in Team Acer half a year ago, but individually he wasn't even the strongest player in that lineup, he did shine in his IGL role and Team Acer did play well and organised as a team and managed some small upsets, even taking a map of fnatic. However the whole thing Team Acer expirement was sadly short lived cuz Threat moved to Japan. Threat was hailed as a tactical mastermind by the community and even back then a lot of voices were raised to see him coaching NiP, considering that he has now signed with NiP I would guess they reached out to him earlier but he chose to go study in Japan instead and NiP eventually sided with Natu. The new meta seems to be to have your 'IGL' outside of the game as a coach and that allows you to have 5 fraggers, like G2 and Na'Vi are doing, seems like NiP are trying the same. Hopefully that can ease up Xizt's game a bit and he can focus more on fragging. Also I don't think Threat is on point right now as a player considering he hasn't played competitively for months now, he probably felt better with the coaching role, also Friberg is hogging (and wasting) a place in the team.

1-2 years ago? How long of a slump should one person have before he is considered a waste of space on a team? If by playing horribly for a year or two isn't enough to get you booted off a team isn't enough then I don't know what is, should he just stay on and bring them down forever? The guy is not even a top 20 player in the world and NiP are aiming to be the best team in the world again according to their CEO, that just doesn't make sense when you keep a player like Friberg around.

imo threat is a good choice without context, but threat is very executionally/tactically based and yeah, you can say he can teach the NiP players to play with that style, but also consider that maybe the NiP players don't want to play that way, so this might not work out at all.

Well, this is a GREAT move by NiP. Like the article reads - threat is one of the best CS minds of all-time. He's got great understanding of the game and was a great IGL in 1.6 and even proved himself a little in CSGO during his short stint with kHRYSTAL, spitfire etc. in Team ACER. Wenton and kHRYSTAL had not played CSGO much at that time either. They still managed to pull off some decent results in their short time taking a map off fnatic in a BO3 for one. I just hope that Threat will take over the calling in the future, if not from the start, so that Xizt is finally free from the calling and can finally focus more on on fragging because that would be a huge addition. Xizt is only a decent IGL (failed to renew their playstyle, bad vetos), even though he won a major, but a very skilled player individually. This is move can only be good for NiP. He already know the players personally as well. Edit: You kind of wish allu was still there though over friberg or pyth but if it was his decision to leave then there's not much to say about it.

And maybe xizt as just rifler/support and threat as the 6th player aka igl like G2 does it. Well, so would I. There's many players I would have over friberg after his performance in 2015 tbh. Perhaps threat can help bring back the friberg of old though and I guess they don't want to give up on him just yet.
