SK, Team X disqualified from ELEAGUE

SK Gaming and Team X have both been disqualified from ELEAGUE due to roster changes, the tournament's commissioner Min-Sik Ko has revealed.

The Brazilian team had secured a berth in the quarter-finals after topping Group A while still at Luminosity, whereas the Danish team were due to play in the last-chance bracket after finishing in second place in Group C while representing SK.

ELEAGUE has not yet formally commented on this matter, but the tournament's commissioner, Min-Sik Ko, explained that the Brazilian players' recent move to SK Gaming and the Danish team's departure from the German organisation "do not comply" with the league's rules.

The reason for this is that neither SK nor Luminosity can field the roster that they submitted at the start of the season, which means that the league's spots belong to organisations and not to the competing teams.

Brazilians handed heavy blow

On May 31, Min-Sik Ko publicly stated that "there were no plans to sanction either team", but he was merely referring to the contract dispute between SK and Luminosity that had been reported days earlier.

SK Gaming captain Gabriel "⁠FalleN⁠" Toledo took to Twitter to express his shock at the decision, which, in his eyes, punishes his team for seeking better conditions.

Those sentiments were echoed by Team X member Michael "⁠Friis⁠" Jørgensen, who claims that his team were "ignored" by ELEAGUE officials during the process.

Cloud9 have been moved from the last-chance bracket straight to the playoffs as a result of this decision, with Renegades and Gambit Gaming having both earned spots in the last-chance bracket, which now looks as follows:

Gambit	vs.	Virtus.pro

G2	vs.	MOUZ
FaZe	vs.	CLG

The top two teams from the last-chance qualifier, which will run from July 12-15, will secure spots in the single-elimination playoffs, joining the following six teams:

Ninjas in Pyjamas	Astralis	fnatic
Natus Vincere	Envy	Cloud9

Luminosity & SK Gaming are no longer eligible to compete in our first season due to roster changes that do not comply with @EL rules

*UPDATE* The article has been updated to give more context to Min-Sik Ko's May 31 tweet, which merely referred to the reported contract dispute between SK and Luminosity. SK DQ happened because SK had another team in Eleague that lost in their group. Now they get another team that passed their group and get free spot in play offs on fucking television. Org holds spot, not players that's how this league works. If players held spot, each team would start going to better paying orgs if they passed to play offs. This may be, bar none, one of the worst rulings I've seen in this game. They changed organizations, which is NOT the same as changing your lineup. How that can be construed as such is, frankly, mind-boggling. Locking a team into organizational restraints means that teams can end up being taken advantage of if they want to stay in the league. It's one thing to keep player swaps to a minimum, but as we've seen throughout CS history, organizations can do some really sketchy shit. This is penalizing the players, completely.

It's why you put a contract in place, which they both signed after having lawyers review. In SK/LG situation, they could of easily came to a better decision of allowing LG to stay LG until league contracts ended. But they did not and know they have breached a contract. Just like the one's LG signed if they would have not played for SK at some point. The reality is that the PLAYERS earned the spot in the league, NOT the organization. How players handle their relationships with organizations should NOT be dictated by any league, because it isn't in the best interest of the players. What you're not understanding is that in a situation like this, it gives an organization the leverage to take advantage of their players, especially when those players might be attempting to find better representation. It's essentially an open invitation to black mail, where an organization can force a team to stay within their ranks until they finish a league. This is NOT OKAY in ANY sense. Period. It's not about if SK/LG didn't understand, and it's not really about how messy their situation was leading up to the transfer. It's about what's healthy for the scene and the players, and neither of these things are a reality when players lose freedom over their own working conditions.

I have to agree with ELeague's decision. They are trying to market the game to the masses that do not follow the CS scene closely. Having LG and SK swap rosters would mind fuck the typical audience they are trying to reach. Honestly this could all be avoided if CS orgs/players/tournament host agreed on an off season. I think its the right move by the E-League officials. Its like in any other professional sports. Its the organization the spot belongs to. I mean think of it in professional football or soccer. A club which reaches the playoffs, for example in Champions League or similar tournaments, remains the spot no matter what transfers say, even if a club buys a whole team (unlikely but you know what i mean)

Didn't the team Without A Roof change orgs and become Kaliber during ECS (correct me if I'm wrong)? ECS is similar to ELeague as it takes place over multiple weeks. esports will NEVER work in a pro league model like the major sports leagues. In baseball, football, soccer, basketball, track, etc.. The sport never changes. Makes longevity much easier to attain. In esports, the sport being played is constantly changing. Whether it be updates or new games in general. Causing longevity issues. Hurting the player pool and audience numbers. Which is obviously, terrible. And thats not even mentioning the average age of pro/invite level players. Low maturity levels, roster churning, etc. The meta of esports in NA is that gaming is for kids or in your off time. There are so many other established opportunities for young men to make a living. esports is just a hobby here in NA. It will be 20+ years before we see a well established, well run esports league. Until then, we get to see a bunch of leagues start and fail.

+1 I love the idea of having eSports on TV. I wish that one day, a whole LAN tournament can get broadcast time. But I don't want to see it broadcasted as a sport. Major sports leagues have one season a year, and all those games are played in that season with a playoffs and championship. CS has multiple different tournaments and "seasons" (EPL and ECS). CS in itself can't be turned into a sport because the pro scene is huge, so I think it's stupid to have one single tournament attempt to brand it as one.

Ok, show me the rule that says the teams are equal organizations. This new interpretation was just created right now. The Turner Tv hosters in Brazil were saying that spots belongs to the players in tv broadcasting before this happened, and now they are looking like clowns. I have a long list of shady things that happened in this case. Managers from other events saying that players have the spots in their events. But it's alright, unfortunately this will mark the NA scene.

One thing I find ironic about the situation is the player who more than anyone wanted to create individual branding for players versus teams/orgs was vilified by Brazilians for one game.

No, they didn't knew that they would be invited to be disqualified. The Eleague organization already knew about the possible org change, it was public that the SK contract was signed in March, way before this league beginning and rules. But it's, ok, moving on, NA scene revealed his true face.

Only haters talk about reading the rules. Everybody read and know that page 11, #13 and #14 left to the comissioner will what this rules means. So you can argue about rules, but the fact is: low tier NA orgs need comisioner helps to get more spots. FlipSid3 knows that and C9 too. Soon the SA scene will increase with valve's support and NA orgs only will get spots in majors with this kind of help.

Who am I hating? I don't really care about the teams involved. Note how you are so overprotective of the team you like to the point of trying to reduce my statements to blind hate. I didn't quite understand your first paragraph. Though once again, at the end of the day, if Fallen and co. had done this differently, there would be no issue for the supposedly villainous NA orgs to exploit. I think that's the bottom line.

You are defending the "rules". And i'm pointing the possible rule that everybody is talking about for being the cause of dsq. The rule is vague and clearly left the interpretation to the Event Comisioner. And we don't even have sure if this is the rule that punished them, because this "rule" thing is so poorly made. And how i said what Fallen supposed to do different? He already signed the contract with SK before the team being invited to Eleague. And it was a public act because the fight between LG and SK so the organization was noticed in all internet/community/esport site. Eleague can't argue about not knowing the new sk line up. And to correct myself, i mean Selfless and C9. I'm with flipsid3 in my mind because tomorow.

It is up for interpretation, and perhaps it should have been more clear. I don't disagree with that. But the fact of the matter is that it was interpreted that way. That isn't a point of contention. The important part is this: If they were aware of the rules(which if they were smart, they would be, this is their life work), then once again, this would never been an issue had Fallen and co made arrangements with either ELEAGUE or their org to make it so they could keep playing. That is their responsibility, not the responsibility of the league.

Update: According to an ELeague spokesperson, "The decision to replace Luminosity and SK Gaming was solely based on the violation of league rules and the agreements in place with all competing teams that were established prior to our first season." It has been updated in response to that article. LG and SK knew the circumstances of what could happen, since they did sign the contracts with ELeague. They should of factored this in before coming to the decision that LG should play under SK. A good solution would be to play out any outstanding leagues before transferring to exhaust all contractual obligations to said league. Something their lawyers should of made them aware of.

according to that article the petition accuses eleague for wanting to sanction only luminosity organization initially. if that's indeed the case, the update is merely damage control and doesn't make sense otherwise. why would the NA orgs make such a petition in the first place if the verdict would remain the same and favorable to them? how could they play out any outstanding leagues before transferring when the contract with lg ran out on the first of july if you don't account the LOI. logically speaking the best solution would be to never apply to eleague since it doesn't allow changing organizations, and the best solution for ex-sk would be... well nothing. they had 0 control over the situation. i don't want to repeat what i already said about the ruling, it is outrageous and has no place in the current scene. read my previous comments if you want a better explanation why. the point i made in #753 is that the petition bit is very important and should be brought to the public's awareness.

Let's be honest here since day one of this shit league its pretty blatantly obvious who ever the people running this shit show are completely clueless about CS Go in general. Not long ago they took a spot that could of been given to The Immortals or Tyloo and offered it to some random shit NA team no one cares about because it was cheaper to accommodate them. Now this, something is definitively wrong here neither of ex-sk or ex-lg are should be punished at all this is a natural process that happens in e-sports all the time, when your contract is running out you look for a new home or resign to current org, reading the bullshit statements the E League retards release is a waste of time.

Indeed, this decision will hurt there reputation, as well as cost them respect to many. Two teams who are top contenders who do not have any intentions of hurting e-league legally. Rules must be reformed. A roster change would make more sense than an org change. I can assume their contract was poorly written and did not include the words, 'current organization' and probably specified it had to be the org they started with, in some way.
