Group stage over, single elim next

The second day of the World Cyber Games Counter-Strike 1.6 tournament has come to an end and with it so have the group stages.

Two days ago 46 teams from around the world were gathered in Cologne, Germany to fight out this year’s World Cyber Games championship. Today, 30 of these teams have been eliminated with the sad thought that the only thing they achieved was a short holiday in Germany and no slice of the whopping $ 132,500US prize purse. Among the teams heading home are the Brazilian side mibr along with a bitter British dignitas. For the remaining 16 teams however, the battle continues

Tomorrow will see the start of the single-elimination, best of 3 stage. The teams left in the tournament include the following:

Sweden SK Gaming
Canada NoPression
Norway cbteam
Australia Team Immunity
Korea e-STRO
Poland MYM
Denmark mTw
Kazakhstan k_23
Finland GamePlay
Taiwan HiNet-UMX
United States Gravitas Gaming
Uzbekistan Just
Russia PUTb
France eSport-Eu
Ukraine DTS.chatrix
Belgium TEK9

Tournament favourites now must be between mTw, MYM, SK Gaming and the Korean e-STRO. The most surprising of the teams to have survived the group stages are Kazakhstani based side k23, will they be able to go any further in the next phase of the tournament?

A full list of brackets and matches can be found here. It is clear that due to the WCG’s lack of organisation, mTw will face MYM in the final 8 if they both proceed to that round. Bearing in mind that it is a single-elimination stage, only one can survive. Similarly, assuming both last, e-STRO will face SK Gaming in the quarter-finals. While we will still have exciting matches to watch, this means that the top 4 favourites remaining will meet each other before the semi-finals as would be expected in any grand tournament.

A list of the first of tomorrow’s matches, including times can all be found below:

[upcomingbooked,14,811618]

[upcomingbooked,14,811619]

[upcomingbooked,14,811620]

With 16 of the world’s top teams remaining, and everything to play for there is no doubt that tomorrow will be day filled with excitement and thrilling entertainment. Don’t forget to place bets for a chance to win some of this month’s prizes.

HLTV.org promises to bring you full event coverage which can all be found here, and will bring you live HLTV whenever possible, however due to WCG restrictions we are unable to broadcast any stage matches.

kind of unfair that Norvegian team or gravitas'll advance to the semi-finals with no good opponent on the way but I look forward to see cbteam-mYm with element vs Neo xD

Agreed, day two was absolutely crap compared to day one. Really not fair. If you put MiBR and dignitas into day two, both would have qualified.

Somehow it's always a top team vs. a not-so-top team.

It's logical, if there were fighting strong teams against each other in lower stages, there would be some worse ones fighting in semi-final because lot of top teams would be eliminated, what seems to me to be little weird. Organisation know what's doing :)

Sure you want to create an interesting elimination stage with some top-clans in the end but it does not seem very fair. If 2 not-so-top clans play vs. each other it's more fair than some unknown clan vs. say SK Gaming in the first round.
