Quarter-finals at WCG
8-11-2008 15:23
Third day at World Cyber Games 2008 and time for the playoffs – Russian mix sent home, GamePlay close to early exit.
Sixteen teams advanced from the group stage being played the first two days. Third day should see the playoffs at World Cyber Games 2008. Interesting matchup was revealed last night when the last matches ended, which today saw several upsets and interesting outcomes.
SK Gaming started horrible in their match against Just from Uzbekistan and at a point Just looked like taking one map from SK Gaming. SK Gaming pulled the right strings and cleaned up the mess they created.
Most interesting match of the day should be GamePlay taking on Team Immunity. The Aussies had yesterday been through secured further participation at WCG, by defeating dignitas (ruled out by typo in the official rules). GamePlay did really look bad to begin with and lost first map to the Aussies. On dust2 the Fin’s found the awesome play we saw earlier this week in Extreme Masters III, and secured a 16:5 win, going on to third and all deciding map. Once again GamePlay started out horrible, even starting as CT on nuke. Immunity had a solid lead as T, before the Fin’s realized their mistakes. GamePlay pulled their A-game out of the hat on the second half and sent the Aussies home.
World e-Sports Masters bronze-medalists from e-STRO did not give much to the Belgium team of TEK9. With a lost pistol-round on dust2, e-STRO went nuts and took 16 rounds straight. On inferno TEK9 pulled out some nice plays, but not enough for a win, e-STRO defeated TEK9 16:13.
Russian mix PUTb should take on k_23, the teams sharing the same coach at this event. The audience named PUTb as favorites to advance, but the Kazakhstanis wanted it different. Russian defense as CT on train fell apart with k_23 dominating those bombsites, 10:5 for k_23 first half. The Russians found momentum and some confidence as terrorists and the match ended up going down to the wire, ending up with a deciding 30th round to determine the winner, with k_23 pulling out victoriously. On inferno k_23 once again had a great game, ending up eliminating PUTb from World Cyber Games 2008.
Norway’s hope in cbteam had a close first map against HiNet-UMX, ending up being determined in overtime, with a Norwegian victory. Second map HiNet-UMX had no power left in the engine and lost 16:3 to cbteam.
Gravitas Gaming had no problems eliminating their neighbors from NoPression (Canada). Two fast maps, with a total of 7 rounds going to NoPression, Gravitas secured their further participation in the tournament.
The silver-medalists from last year, mTw, had got paired with a French team, a nationality the Danes have been struggling with before. But no French success this time as the Danes locked down a victory by winning two maps. The Frenchmen got fairly close to a tie on train, but with the likes of Sunde and zonic, it never came to a reality for eSport-Eu.
MYM found themselves in trouble to begin with, when they took on DTS.chatrix. The Polish team had been kind of downhill lately, but regained momentum against the Ukrainians and secured two maps wins and further participation in the tournament.
Time for the quarter-finals. A thriller match will take its place, when mTw take on MYM. The match will unfortunately not have HLTV, as it is a stage match. Here are the matchups for the quarterfinals.
