Next major to take place in January

HLTV.org has learned that the next Valve-supported CS:GO Major will not take place this year, but instead is expected to happen in January 2017.

After three Majors in each of 2014 and 2015, this calendar year will end with ESL One Cologne as its second and last Valve-supported major, HLTV.org has learned.

As is custom in the major selection process, Valve recently asked various tournament organizers to submit their proposal for where and when they could run the tenth CS:GO Major.

SK will remain the only Major champions in 2016

At that point, it was said that they are aiming for January 2017 as a tentative date, which Valve confirmed to HLTV.org.

It is still not determined which tournament organizer and location will be in charge of expanding on the CS:GO legacy, but MLG have already stated they have the stadium ready to repeat this year's Columbus event.

It is also expected for DreamHack to enter the race strongly, as after organizing a Major each of the past 3 years (DH Winter in 2013 and 2014, and DH Cluj in 2015) they will end up empty handed this year. It is rumored that numerous other organizers, such as ELEAGUE, FACEIT, ESL, Starladder, ESWC and possibly more have also submitted their proposals.

Nice!

I think the reason the major is so late is because they probably want to make the tenth major one to remember so there will be a lot of things better in the next major prob to previous ones e.g. increased prize pool prob :)

unless they go to crowd-funding and other sources of money for the prize-pool IMO I highly doubt it dude. Follow the journalism and recent reports. All fingers pointing that we wont be seeing the growth like we did in 2015 and early 2016 without gambling driving a big percentage of viewership/sponsor interest. I'm basically saying valve wont be shelling out any more for prize pools and player cuts if they are not getting the same or more money from the event organizers and sponsors. While I think and most agree that CS has the best schedule for its key events with 3 majors spaced out nicely during the year. DOTA has kicked Valve's ass as far as crowd-funding and other innovative ways to create anything to 'remember' let alone more money for the players. Dont get we wrong I love CS and still will after this recent mess but its not looking to hot till all this tension dies down and the scene can recover a little bit

And you don't think Valve makes a huge amount of money of keys alone? (Of which they could surely spend more on prize pools.)

Jesus christ how old are you haha.. it's valve. They've never made a good competitive game and they dribble at every turn when it comes to competitive gaming on the whole. It's much more likely to be something along the lines of 'We've had 2 500k'ers this year.. that'll do'.

Yup I did. There probably are, still doesn't change the fact dota2 had lower figures for active players and viewers of events before we saw them give it the international/crowd funded event. Just find it strange cs hasn't had the same treatment yet.

CS was made by Gooseman and Cliffe as a half life mode, valve just taken this idea and clumsily tried to improve it. Dota is also mode to War3, again they stole someones idea and made money on it, even if they have made good product.

They hired the modders and bought the rights, as far as I know, in both cases, they didn't steal anything.

Valve didn't construct cs or dota out of thin air, both games were kicking around in one form or another and they lucked out acquiring them. They've made absolutely insane single player games, without a doubt top 10 material but it's quite clear they don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to competitive gaming. As the last 15 years have shown?! Are you arguing otherwise??????

that's good... too many majors make the game boring. there needs to be more time inbetween to make the tourney bigger and create more hype and excitement. imagine the football world cup was every year instead of every 4 years, it wouldn't nearly be as big and prestigious and not so many people would care.

No, it's not good. The potential skill ceiling is lowered with long breaks between majors. I'd rather they removed some online games that doesn't bring the best out of every team. You can't compare it to world cup.. Players have their leagues, CL/EL, cups etc. and in between many national games (qualifications) and Continental Cups (America, Euro etc.). With other words, football players needs to perform at the very best every time, CS players doesn't.
2016-08-11 17:09

rather the opposite. skill ceiling increases because these breaks give teams the opportunity to work on themselves and their team. a cluttered schedule is counterproductive. teams need time for improvement and innovation. and as said already, fewer tournaments make the whole thing more interesting and prestigious.

I'd agree with you if the teams took advantage of these opportunities, but they don't. With a major in January 2017 most teams will start prac in december 2016. Right now they'll keep playing default setups and tweak few of their strategies and use that, nothing innovative. And that, imo, is lowering skill ceiling. We don't see the big creative changes we used to 1.6. Most teams depends on raw skill atm. At least, that's my observation.

It didn't have to be like this. Another major could be held later in the year, so it would not be boring and there would still be 3 majors. This announcement sucked.

fuck sake, but this might take viewership out of the game, having to wait so long for the next major but then in turn could be a huge viewing hit since its been so long..

2 a year would be fine as long as they do them in scheduled intervals (mid and end year preferably although obviously not the case here) and make them bigger as in full week, 16 team all bo3 with bo5 final and at least 2mil prize pool. if they keep the format and prize pool the same and just randomly throw in two a year i feel thats just a downgrade

Day 1 : Group A, 2 BO3 matches (team 1 vs team 2 and team 3 vs team 4 games) + Group B 2 BO3 matches Day 2 same thing for Group C and D Day 3 : losers' games (BO3) for every group (4*BO3) Day 4 : winners' games (BO3) for evey group (4*BO3) Day 5 : deciders games (BO3) for every group (4*BO3) Day 6 : quarter finals (4*BO3) Day 7 : semi finals (2*BO5) Day 8 : final (BO7). Now that's a real major, now the hype is real :)

Fair enough, but we have that with cologne and it's much better to have a venue all to your self, you can be more creative with production and format. Also DHW had other games there, so a tournament that is meant to be a "world championship" shouldn't be sharing a stage with other games

Doesn't matter how many games you have at a venue, if you have a big budget for CS:GO. Actually I wanted to visit DHW because it's still a true LAN at heart, maybe get into a BYOC tournament for fun, I don't want for csgo to get so disconnected like real sports, where you can't ever play with the superstars, here you have a chance to meet them have a chat and stuff and still be their fan.

Do you seriously think you can fit 14,000+ people to watch one game at a ordinary DW. Also you can meet the players at these other events as well, there are meet ups and signings at all big events

Look, DHW is a great event and the CS event was one of the stand outs of 2015 but I don't think it should be a major, a major should have the best production, crowd, format and location possible

Do you seriously think that 14,000 people are gonna come to Jonkoping just to watch CS? It's not about filling half of a stadium you know, it's about having a good time, and what's better for that? A Lan for everyone with a few tournaments and other stuff or just watching CS for 8 hours over the weekend?

This is just the point, did you watch cologne, on the final day the place was full. You are stuck in 2014, people do come out and watch. What it is about is putting on the best looking show possible so more people are interested, more people put money in, and 2/3000 crammed into a convention hall doesn't cut it for what's meant to be one of the biggest events of the year
2016-08-11 02:34

"MLG have already stated they have the stadium ready to repeat this year's Columbus event." oh fuck yeah mlg is going to bring another major to columbus. thank fuck. glad they're keeping it in columbus instead of putting it in another state so i can go again :D

yeah they're pretty cheap, sometimes even if you don't plan that much in advance you can get cheap flights because there's still a lot of room left on the plane that they need to fill. for example i could grab a round trip ticket to get from ohio to florida on a plane that leaves in a week for about $90. not bad considering it's over 1000 miles away

Or maybe they realized the over saturation of CS:GO events might actually hurt it? Hard to get excited when there are events all the time.

They'll either need to remove 1 map from the Active Pool or add another one along with Infernew.

take which map out? not Dust2 because it's a classic, I don't think they'll take Nuke out(it's something like their newly puppy, alongside train)...

I would say either cache or Dust 2 goes and my money is on Dust 2. I know its a classic and all but a few things y it should go. One its stagnant their is nothing new teams do and its the same game over and over again. Two Cobble, overpass, train, and nuke have already gone under major changes. Three values never does what anyone things is rational when it comes to game play and the map pool.

majors become less and less exciting over the years i remember katowice 2014 it was the major i have ever seen but now there is no excitiment because everybody know hacker sk will dominate it.people just watch because of the drops which is really sad

that's good... too many majors make the game boring. there needs to be more time in between to make the tourney bigger and create more hype and excitement. imagine the football world cup was every year instead of every 4 years, it wouldn't nearly be as big and prestigious and not so many people would care. +1 for valve on this one

lmao the hypocrisy of people on this website. people say that there are too many tournaments and then when Valve announces that the next major will be next year people say 'boring majors, boring scene. cs:go dead xd'. this is a good thing. the fact that we know about the next major already and that we have to wait until 2017 for it builds up a lot of hype for the next major. gj valve

I find that real "Major" tournaments should be held twice a year and no more than that. This frequency would give teams enough time to prepare and raise their level, so they could show public and their rivals something new. About current tentative date, major in January would bring nothing more than just bad preparation level of teams due to Christmas, New Years Eve and other holidays.

+1 2 Majors is more than enough . In the end of the day , nowdays we have so many other tournaments aside Majors to look for , they filling easily the gap 3rd major might leave.

It would be great if given to EPICENTER: since they can increase the price pool - both Valve and ESForce can pump money into it.

LOL. SK would have been #1 with even more margin if there was another major. They would have won it easily i guess. Fnatic is on a slump, NaVi was on a big slump (but maybe woth s1mple the team could perform again). Only VP and maybe G2 (if they had more consistency) could cause some problems to SK.

this is exactly what I'm thinking. haven't really felt as hyped for a major as I did the first time I watched one so hopefully the 5 month break builds up hype, because there won't be a major for a while and especially because we know when the next major will be, giving time for hype to be built up surrounding the event
