Na`Vi edge out NiP, on to semis

Another draw at EPICENTER as NiP win Nuke 16-11 and Na'Vi win Overpass 16-3. Round difference means Na`Vi goes to semifinals. NiP are out.

With yet another tie between G2 and Dignitas earlier today, both Natus Vincere and Ninjas in Pyjamas had all to win and lose at the same time as either team could take the number one spot in the group and also end up going out last place.

First up on Nuke it was the ninjas that got their CT-pistol, but only just as Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev 1v3 almost pulled off a ridiculous line up of all the CT's in vents with a Glock. Due to back to back bomb plants and keeping the CT survivors low the CIS team applied the pressure early on to get a crucial T round, but the Swedes counter-reset them straight away to secure a 6-1 lead.

In a chaotic round echoing the spirits of match making where Natus Vincere in a 3v5 got a bomb plant on lower and had CT's practically walk into their crosshairs, it came down to Mikail "Maikelele" Bill almost pulling off a ninja defuse by being just a tick short of it. It spurred on Ioann "Edward" Sukhariev and co. to make it back to a single round deficit with 5-6.

Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund and his team took the lead again and barely avoided reset thanks to the aforementioned player, as he this time lived up to the namesake of the team, defusing in a smoke. 9-6 in favor of the ninjas going into halftime.

Natus Vincere took the obligatory three rounds off the back of their CT-pistol plus an extra thus taking the lead for the first time 10-9, but the Swedish began to consistently overwhelm the bombsites early, as there was not being much aggression put on from Denis "seized" Kostin and his squad.

They had a chance to pull back in the 23rd round, but botching their man advantage in a 4v3, impatiently pushing out from vents on to B-site and the Swedes had the map on a silver platter closing it out 16-11.

Backs against the wall on Overpass the Black-Yellow barely got their T-pistol with a last second plant followed by two more anti-ecos and hard-resetting the Swedes right after the first gun round, thus comfortably getting to a 8-1 lead by blasting through to CT-defense time and time again.

Edward lead the charge on Overpass

Off the back of a tactical pause Adam "friberg" Friberg and his team posted a round on the board, himself getting a quad-kill, but all for naught as they were once again hard-reset by a solid gameplan from seized and co. 13-2 for Natus Vincere going into the second half.

A crucial pistol round win with Richard "Xizt" Landström stepping massively up with a triple kill was a light in the darkness, but quickly turned off by the CIS machine as they caught the ninjas with their pyjamas down on the obvious force buy and Egor "flamie" Vasilyev clutched it out the 1v1 against GeT_RiGhT blowing out the map 16-3.

that is subjective as well; imho, it would have been more honest to have some decider between 3/4 teams, maybe even between 1/2 too or I don't know, but there's certainly some weird aftertaste left after NIP got eliminated like that and i'm cheering for Na'Vi, btw

They had to face 3 of the top 6 teams in the world, and while they did get bodied out of the last map, they looked pretty good for most of it. It easily could have been any of those other teams being eliminated instead.

And this is such a terrible format as well, its so unfair that everyone wins 3 maps each but it all gets decided on round difference. It should be bo3 next time to get definite winners.

it's often a single map in bo3 too lol. unless it's a 2-0. but if a team A could 2-0 team B in a bo3, why the fuck didn't they do that here? the fact that they're all 1-1 means they're all roughly good in terms of form in this event. this format tells you allot more than a bo3...

No it doesnt. Group A is fucking testament to the fact that a bo2 format is retarded. NiP won 3 maps, just like all the others in the group but the system sends them out in last because of round difference.

yeah because they're worst team. just because it's close doesn't mean it's "unfair". they did that to themselves, getting assraped 3-16 in Overpass. you deserve to lose. in gsl format, or just straight all bo3's, you DON'T play all the teams in the group so you can't even tell if you are the worst in the group. and if it's all bo3's, if the losing team dropped the ball and playing like morons after 1-1, they're out. no second chances. how is that more "fair" than a system where they can show how good they are vs othjer teams and actually determine who's the worst in the group. in general, how can MORE MAPS be worse than few maps lol...

Hey what if the ESL One NY grand-final was a bo2 game, with cobble and overpass? VP would've won in RD, because they buttraped Na'Vi on cobble. But there was a third map and Na'Vi won. Also there is an hour between the end of each series and the beginning of the next. Why not a bo3 match then? Because EPICENTER only had 10 computers...

Do you get my point or not? if Na'Vi and VP played a bo2 group stage game - cobble and train, with 3-16 and 16-8 - VP would've come out on top due to RD. What if NiP and Na'Vi had played Dust2 for a full bo3? NiP could've won and they would've advanced.
2016-10-19 18:22

yeah and? no I don't get your point because it doesn't make any sense. here, NiP could advance just by actually winning 1 map more. they didn't they're out. if x thing happened in format y, team A could've advance therefore format z is bad because it doesn't have the ruleset of format y!

this is sucha retarded post why do I bother... but I'll bite fiest of all in that bo5 you posted, there will be a winner (19-17, 28-25, 16-13) so this nothing to with my post. secondly, this format isn't applicable to binary matchups. you have *multiple* teams playing in a group stage and you're supposed to determine the worst team. ina final, the worst team is automatically the one with the worst map score and that follows logically an odd number of maps.

"first of all in that bo5 you posted, there will be a winner (19-17, 28-25, 16-13) so this nothing to with my post." Absolutely everything to do with your post. As you said yourself in other replies, the group stage is made to seek for the best and the worst teams among the ones in the group and seed them in the playoffs according to their results. In a game where maps matters while rounds don't, we shouldn't decide which team goes home and which team goes straight to the semis based on RD, this just sounds wrong to me. That's pretty much my feeling, I can't accept that NaVi advances to the semis and NiP goes home while all four team tied all their matches. You will come and say to me "But NaVi lost a close game (16-11) and NiP got raped (16-3) and that makes all the difference". I understand but I don't agree. If in the playoffs only maps matters, should group stage follow the same line of thought? GSL Style format with eliminations and deciders BO3 are the best in my opinion.

this is valid criticism, that only maps should decide and not rounds hence the ideal fdormat is bo3 round robin which almost no one uses for obvious reasons (time, exhaustion, money). but this format here is much better than swiss format and gsl (which is ***MUCH**** better than shitty swiss) but it's certainly only an opinion. what's not an opinion is like the guy above is saying"this format is much better than that because that does not do things exactly as this". playoffs doesn't HAVE groups!!! no one in the history of the world is using a bo2, bo4, bo6.... to decide anything between TWO teams or competitors. it's so obvious I don't even fathom how you can ask that and trying to compare it when logic tell us they're incomparable.

While I agree that would be nice, there isn't enough time for BO3s (unless you made the event go over Thursday or Friday as well which they weren't able to do cause they couldn't get the arena those days). BO2 is certainly nicer than BO1 which are very much random.

this system is used in any team sport for many years, it can't be wrong. For example, in football groups (champions league) you play two matches with each opponent: at the homesoil and at the opponents homesoil, that's pretty equal to BO2 here.

Don't use excuses of "it's unfair" to explain NiP's elimination. NiP got rekt 3-16, they haven't been unlucky, it's not a a 2 rounds difference that eliminated them, it was a stomp.

Not it's a good system. Teams were really close in terms of level (every team went 3-3) so round difference is a good tie breaker. If you are more consistent than opponents you don't take a (or a few) rekt and your overall round difference is better.

uneven group. A is more competitive than B group. They should move either HR or frantic to A that would be more balanced groups.

I am FAR from a NiP fan, but this last place finish is pretty bullshit. Round difference should NEVER be used as a tiebreaker. Either have a format that won't allow for ties; or add tiebreaker matches and maybe seed them based on round difference (1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd).

What a STUPID format! NiP would've easily defeated every of those teams in bo3, but somehow it doesn't matter since you only need to win 50% of maps to be through - W!T!F! The round difference? Who even cares about it? Stupid shit.

delusional? you're pretty fucking delusional yourself. Just keeping quiet whenever NiP win something and when they get one bad result you come out of your cave and throw shit at them. I don't want to argue about whether NiP is top 3-4, but there is no logic at all in your argument. NiP has won both Starladder and DH Malmö... Oh and hello Jonathan E

What you're saying is not how this tournament works. This is the preferable format. It should all add up in maps; wins and losses and the round difference shouldnt count. It was 3-3 across the entire board, but a team still got knocked out of the tournament. A few rounds here and there should not matter, it should be all about winning the game as a whole.

A win is a win, it doesn't matter if its 16-14 or 16-3. CS is not about winning every specific round in a great manner, it's about forming a strategy to WIN the game, and sometimes you have to use some rounds as a way of resetting and reestablishing your economy, which means some rounds can easily go away and don't mean much for the game as a whole, but certainly a way of winning in the end.

If teams looked at score to play this would break NiP could have got the 12th round and they could have been killing themselves every fucking round with taser and they would have won anyways. That's not how cs works imo.

Format isn't that unfair, it's just that it's boring to watch and indecisive. I think every team should play one map against each other first before playing a team twice.

Nope, NiP sucked hard in Overpass and did absolutely nothing. Instead Na'Vi played a decent Nuke and ended up with double digits. So no, it showed.

Yea so it's 1-1. It doesn't matter how you win the game, you just win. The only thing that exists is win and loss, simple as that. A third map would make a difference for all the matches (i'm not talking only about this one).

BO2 round robin isn't bad at all. It's just trash as fuck it comes down to round difference. They should make the tied teams play a BO3 decider.

BO2 round robin is cool. The problem is the fact they're using round difference as the decider for tied teams when it should be a BO3.
