Swiss format at ELEAGUE Major

The Swiss format will be used at the ELEAGUE Major Main Qualifier and in the group stage at the ELEAGUE Major.

A tweet by the VP of ELEAGUE revealed that the Swiss format will be used in the ELEAGUE Major Main Qualifier taking place from December 15-18. ELEAGUE Major's group stage will also use the same format in the group stage, which will be the first time that it is used at a Major.

The Swiss-system was used in the previous Major Main Qualifier which took place in Katowice before ESL One Cologne. ELEAGUE Major Main Qualifier, featuring sixteen teams, will continue using the same format.

ELEAGUE Major will take place in January

At the ESL One Cologne Main Qualifier, all of the sixteen competing teams were in the same group and after the predetermined initial matches, teams with the same record who have not played against one another squared off. Three losses resulted in elimination and three wins guaranteed a spot at the Major.

Whether the ELEAGUE Major itself will feature a sixteen-team or two eight-team Swiss groups is not yet clear but we will update you when the information becomes available.

definitely, this system is way better than any other shit we have had so far. No group of death, no easy groups as well, --> best teams overall should go trough. 1 or 2 lucky map wins wont get you anywhere.

Its worse cause you get shit where all you have to do is win BO1s. Also it doesn't help group of death situations at all, in fact it worsens it as it benefits teams that get off the poor starts as they face the worst teams while the teams that get off to the best starts face the best teams. Thus you get situations like in ESL NY where NaVi faced every single playoff team and Liquid where they got to face G2 and Fnatic twice (or Optic who got to face Astralis, Fnatic, and G2, the 3 worst teams). You also get situations where Optic can get in instead of VP cause of 1 good map. The problem with GSL is the seeding, the problem with Swiss is that it is just a flawed system.

ez, you win 3 matches you are qualified, if you lose 3 matches you are eliminated first round random winners get 1-0 losers get 0-1 second round all winners (1-0) from first round play against each other all losers (0-1) from first round play against each other after second round teams will get or 2-0 or 1-1 or 0-2 third round all teams with 2-0 play against each other for qualification match all 1-1 same (winners get 2-1, losers get 1-2) all teams with 0-2 play for elimination match fourth and fifth rounds same shit who win 3 matches qualifies, who lose 3 matches get their asses out of the tournament

2x bo1 are random as fuck, in swiss format, u play at least 1 more matches, most likely 2-3 more bcuz even if u start bad by 0-2 or 1-2 ull get to play even teams to kind of fight yourself out of that hole while in gsl format ure fucked after like 0-1 start against NiP (for example) and being under pressure in another bo1 where u can already get eliminated.

This is clearly the best format. People defending the GSL thing love the game less than people (like us) praising the Swiss format. In GSL it's always the same 4 teams from the group meeting BS. Strongest team will likely win in 2 BO1's (sometimes an upset will happen), the shittiest team will go out in 2 BO1's and the 2 "average" will play each other in the BO3 decider. It's predictable as fuck. That Swiss format is great because you don't know, until the draw is made (not even after every game of a round is played) what are gonna be the match ups. This is just fun and way more fair (that Astralis with one stand in and then 2 in the quarters/Dignitrash/Gambit/OpTic was boring as fuck when you had a G2/SK/Fnatic/FaZe group, ok you could fix the seedings but a team wouldn't ever deserve to get access to the next major just because that team won 2 BO1s and became a "Legend" because making top 8 of a Major.) The next thing to fix the Majors is putting an end to the "the 8 teams making at least the quarters" are qualified for the next Major. Only the top 4 should be qualified directly for the next Major.

+3. At the time of the Astralis group, they had teams 9 - 12 HLTV ranked while the death group had four of the top 5. Wasn't very fun to watch. As much as I love watching my favorite teams become legends, top 4 makes sense due to the unstable nature of CSGO rosters and results. Essentially allows 12 teams to qualify instead of 8. Additionally the Swiss format eliminates the stupid group seeding where previous legends are no.1/2 seed for that group even though they are dog shit (CLG anyone?)

Thanks for talking about CLG. Makes me realize my mistake : the NA team in the Astrali/Dignitas/Gambit group was CLG not OpTic. OpTic was on (my opinion) the second weakest group with NiP, NaVi and F3. (to me the VP/Liquid/Mouz/NV is clearly stronger than the NiP/NaVi/OpTic/F3). So yeah that Denmark/Gambit/CLG was even weaker (as OpTic was obviously at the time already better than CLG). I think with 8 teams becoming legend it's not making a strong enough rotation in teams playing Majors. Not that i want to see some "good" teams not playing the Major but to me getting out of groups is clearly not enough to get a seat into a Major 4 to 6 months later. These "good" teams qualifying to Major and getting to top 8 because (it has happened quite a few times) they were mostly in an easy group should have to play the qualifier. Some big names (if we go from 8 to 4 Legends) might not qualify but we might get some new names, which imo wouldn't decrease the entertainment of the Major(TyLoo for example if 12 spots and not 8 are at play in the qualifier).

I like this for the qualifier, but like many others I think it is odd to have it in the Major itself. My question is how the seeding for the playoffs work. With groups you have one team in first place and one team in second place, making it easy to square teams of for the playoffs. In the swiss format it seems to me that it is likely we will get many teams with the same score, and it will be hard to decide which of those teams will be getting what seed for the playoffs. I do not like it when round difference decide anything. That way teams that play good, close, entertaining matches, risk getting punished.
