AST, Immortals, & FaZe to playoffs

Astralis defeated FaZe 16-8 on Train, while Immortals beat fnatic 16-14 on Mirage in the last matches of Group A at IEM Katowice. Astralis, FaZe, and Immortals all have 4-1 records and will play tiebreaker games to decide the order of the group.

Astralis who had a 3-1 record before their last match in the group stage and FaZe who came into the match having won all four of their previous matches squared off on Train. The T-sided Astralis won the pistol round after Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander's opening kill and followed it up with a crucial 2vs4 clutch in the first weapon round where Nicolai "device" Reedtz picked up a quad kill.

Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth clutched a 1vs2 against Finn "karrigan" Andersen and Håvard "rain" Nygaard to make it 5-0 and the clutch galore continued with a 2vs3 (6-0). The Danes started the game 10-0 and finished the half 11-4 ahead.

device's Astralis cruised to victory

Astralis won the second half pistol round with Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen's triple kill but lost the anti-eco, starting a three round FaZe streak. Astralis took control in their next buy round and won the game 16-8. With this result, both teams finished with 4-1 records, alongside Immortals, and tiebreaker games will decide the order of the first three teams.

The map was Mirage in the match between fnatic and Immortals and the Swedes who started on the CT-side won the first five rounds by only giving away one kill. Despite a round win, the Brazilians couldn't catch any momentum as fnatic extended their lead to 9-1.

Immortals won another round to make it 2-9 but fnatic didn't mess around, replying immediately. fnatic won almost every round cleanly, not letting Immortals get any kills and won the half 12-3.

A pistol round victory by fnatic which extended their lead to 13-3 seemed to seal the deal but Immortals fought back, picking up ten rounds in a row to tie the game at 13-13. Dennis "dennis" Edman and Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer stepped up with double kills to make it 14-13. Immortals were able to complete the comeback and won the map 16-14.

Immortals improved their record to 4-1 after this match and will play tiebreaker games to decide the group order while fnatic will be packing their bags.

Tiebreaker games are useless, overall round difference should be the way to go. And it would shutdown pros thinking "a win is a win" like winning 16-14 is the same as winning 16-3.

Yeah but if the 3 teams are 1-1 on each other, the tourney organizers should look the overall round difference (looking at the round difference on those games between the 3 teams would give too much weight - it's my opinion - to those games when they also played 3 others teams). It should have some importance and be rewarded to be able to stomp the weaker teams, and close those games early (and not having to wait for the 28+th round to win those).

No. A team winning (let's say) every game 16-14 or on OT (and losing one game 2-16 for example, so that this team is 4wins 1loss) shouldn't be topping the group because that team won the head to head vs another team on a score of 16-14 when the other team won every game 16-3 or so. It's putting too much weight on that ONE game (the head to head) when both teams played 5 games.

In football when you play a championship (and playing 5 teams is sort of championship) at the end if both teams have the same number of points you look the goal difference (and if needed because the goal difference is identical, then you consider the number of goals scored, etc)

#79 is my point of view on how head to head shouldn't be the number 1 tie breaker if both teams have the same number of wins (too much weight on that one game)

absolutely agree, waste of time with tie break and make health players are going down, also the team's tactics will leak if they try to make more round in group stage, very bad system
2017-03-01 22:01

When you have this format, MR3 is not the right way. 12+ hours of CS in a day is to much. Playing a 6 team group in one day is not the best way to go. A better way then going directly to MR3 would be. Just take out the games between the tied teams and first look at games won. If still tied, look at round difference in the games between the tied teams. If still tied, then look at round difference in all games. If still tied, then you could play MR3. Another thing they should change is that a win i regulation should give 3 point and in overtime the winner gets 2 points and the loser gets 1 point.

Good idea on the 3 points for a win on regulation time, and 2/1 for a win/loss on overtime. Also the round difference in the games between the 3 teams is a way to tie break, but yeah if you consider the round difference between the 3 teams, i guess if it was a 2 way tie, then the H2H would be the tie breaker, and while i admit it would be a logical tiebreaker, i think it's "too short term" (sorry i cannot find the way to express my thought in english) and that one game shouldn't prevail over the overall round difference (that shows some consistency through the whole group, but as you said some of these ties wouldn't be ties anymore with 3 points for a win in regulation, vs only 2 for a win in overtime).

I haven't met many of these "cancer fnatic fanboy's". Every team has cancer fanboy's but you have to deal with it. Btw I think fnatic did very well. They are coming back to their old form again. But they have to improve their game and make less mistakes
