ESL One Cologne format revealed

ESL has announced the format and the schedule for its upcoming event in Cologne.

After consulting with the participating teams, ESL has decided to use a Swiss system for the group stage - a format that had 10 votes against the double-elimination group's six.

ESL One Cologne, a $250,000 competition, with kick off on July 4 with a three-day Swiss stage, played behind closed doors. The top eight teams will advance to the single-elimination playoffs, which will culminate with a best-of-five grand final. All knockout stage matches will be played in front of a crowd, at the iconic Lanxess Arena.

So teams will play multiple bo1s in a single day since we need 5 rounds and there is only 3 days for group stage.

Yes, but that isn't really a problem. The final day of Swiss system always has some teams playing more than once match.

But i want to know whether 2 matches will be played at the same time.I think, on the first day two matches will be played at the same time since no one will go out that day. From third day it will be like 1 game at a time.

I think there will be 2 matches at once at least on day 1, yeah. Edit: "Two simultaneous matches at a time" for the first day de.esl-one.com/csgo/cologne-2017/news/re..

no ,I don't think that 2 matches will be played at the same time ,it shouldn't At eleague 3 days were enough for Swiss to be played

It was four days.8 matches on first three days and 9 matches on the last day.33 matches are needed for a 16 Team Swiss group format to get 8 teams in the playoffs. So they either play 11 matches in a single day or play some matches at the same time.

so is the swiss stage not in the lanxess arena with the crowd? I mean if some team loses in the swiss stage without a 3-2 atleast we cant see the team playing in the lanxess arena?

Swiss gives higher chance of bad teams to advance, making the quarterfinals in many cases super boring blowout 2-0 wins.

It's not about that, the system is random, so it is possible to be eliminated having played only good teams, and it is possible to advance having played only average teams (see Liquid at Katowice). That is the problem. With groups it's always seeded so it's impossible for any team underdog team to advance w/o at least beating one good team.

so that means if a team loses 1st match doesnt disqualify? If im wrong pls explain me how the swiss format works,ty!

at first all teams have 0-0 sc0re after first round all have either 0-1 or 1-0 score and 1-0 teams paly 1-0 teams like 0-1 teams play 0-1teams after second round there are 2-0 ,0-2 and 1-1 and teams with the same score play each other untill some one get 3 wins (qualified for play-offs ) or 3 loses ( het eliminated) so 8 teams qualify ,8 get eliminated
