Jumpy: Expected [Gambit] to pick Overpass

After fnatic completed their comeback on Inferno against Gambit to close out the match 2-0, we talked to Jimmy "Jumpy" Berndtsson to hear his thoughts on fnatic's performance at DreamHack Open Summer so far.

The Swedish side kicked off the tournament with a win against Cloud9, but wasn't able to secure the first place in the group, falling to CLG in a marathon Train game.

Jumpy feels like fnatic are "at least top 2" on Inferno

To the delight of the home crowd, fnatic pulled through against Gambit with two narrow map victories to secure a spot in the semi-final tomorrow.

In a chat with Jimmy "Jumpy" Berndtsson, we learned about fnatic swapping positions on Mirage, losing the lead to CLG and how they feel about their Inferno.

Your first match here was against Cloud9 on Mirage, after a bit of back and forth you closed it out. Talk to me a bit about the match, what you saw as the coach and how the team felt throughout that match.

We felt pretty confident throughout the whole match when we played Cloud9, the only time we struggled was when they won the pistol round and the first gun round as T, our lead wasn't that big anymore, or they even took the lead I think. When we got some rounds together, in a row, it felt really good and we felt that we had them, that they had no plan about what they wanted to do.

On that map I think olofmeister had, statistically at least, a bad map and he was playing on B, the apartments. Back in the day, when fnatic was on top, it used to be him and KRIMZ on A. So you changed the positions a bit, what was the process behind that?

We felt that our CT side on Mirage was up and down for a really long time. After we lost to a team, I can't remember which one, we decided to switch up the positions. We moved flusha from short to connector, dennis to short and olof to B. Since then, our CT side has been working out really good.

The second match you played was again against a North American side, CLG. That was the marathon Train, you had a good lead on there on the T side, but the whole map ended up being T sided. Firstly, tell me your impressions of that game?

My impression is that we had a really good T side, a good game plan, the guys played really good. We went up 11-4 on the T half and then when we were CT they won the pistol and took us off guard in the first weapon round, they got the momentum going. They played really good on T side on Train. We had some struggles to find a way to beat them. Then it went to overtime, and when it comes to that it was back-and-forth, back-and-forth. Too bad that they ended up winning in the end, but it was a tight match.

In that match, you were 15-12 up, you had the match point and two of your players bought auto shotguns. You lost that round, maybe it wasn't due to that, but was there anything about that round you remember particularly?

That round, maybe it's not optimal to buy two shotguns, but we had really low money, KRIMZ had like $3,800, JW was also on $3,000. They both wanted to go close with shotguns, maybe we should've had one guy to do it, but we had a gameplan to push, be offensive, but it didn't work out.

You played almost 60 rounds on Train versus CLG, how do you adapt to playing so many rounds? Do you run out of ideas, how does it work inside of the team, the mind games that come and all of that?

We felt that our T side, throughout almost the whole overtime, was still doing work, so we kept doing the same, slow paced style, we got some picks and got into the sites really good. It was our CT side that we tried to change it up, because we played really aggressive in the beginning. We tried to go defensive after a while, it worked out for like two rounds but then they understood what we were doing and they countered it by going T main and pop again.

The last game, against Gambit, first of all, did the veto go as you expected? What maps did you expect to play?

I expected them to pick Overpass against us in the first map, but they picked Train. That was a surprise. Then we could choose between Overpass and Nuke for the last map and we decided to go with Nuke. We could pick Inferno for out map and that was an obvious pick for us because it has been really good for us.

Do you think you are the best Inferno team at the moment?

We are at least top two.

You closed out against Gambit and now you are playing Immortals tomorrow. What do you think about that match?

It's a great team, we lost to them in Katowice when we had I think a 13-3 lead and we threw that match away. So hopefully this time we can take them down and go through to the finals.

Deserves? Thats kinda pointless isnt it. All that matters is how they will perform at the major itself. Fact is there is still no real frontrunner and predicting the major now is just wild guesses at best. All of those teams you named could reach pretty high for sure but i has nothing to do with deserving something.

North is shit... Just some arrogant asses... - And yes, maybe they've beaten SK, but they also did last year, and where did they go after? Exactly. No fucking where. I see VP as top4, cuz we all know how they'll play at a major.
