AMD to pull out of esports
With the world in a deep recession, a financial crisis still in effect, massive layoffs at most big companies, and red numbers on the bottomlines at most companies focused on high tech consumer products esports is bound to have a rough year in 2009.
Today the German website spiegel.de reports that AMD will be withdrawing all their major esports sponsorships, this includes SK-Gaming and the World Cyber Games. AMD dropped their sponsorship of mTw earlier this year, and now look to be completely getting out of esports.
SK manager Alexander Müller told spiegel that SK knew for a long time and are looking for new partners. Hopefully this means SK will not have to undertake drastic team cuts like we saw MYM do earlier this year with their WC3 and Starcraft teams.
Also Intel has hinted that they might be changing their commitment to esports, saying they will re-asses their situation after CeBIT, this could hurt Turtle Entertainment, the company behind ESL, who has Intel as their main sponsor. Turtle say they will clarify exactly what is going on soon.
