Cloud9 send Na`Vi packing at ESL One NY

Cloud9 are through to the semi-finals at ESL One New York after defeating Natus Vincere on two maps.

The first map of the series was Mirage, Cloud9's pick, but it was Na`Vi who drew first blood after retaking the B site with three quick kills from Danylo "⁠Zeus⁠" Teslenko. The Ukrainian team were then caught off-guard by Cloud9's Desert Eagles, with the North Americans taking that chance to build a solid 4-1 lead.

Cloud9's players then perhaps got a bit too greedy as they were bested in an anti-eco round. That round sparked a great run from Na`Vi, who won five rounds in a row, but Cloud9 fought back and secured a narrow 8-7 lead with a 1v2 clutch from Tyler "⁠Skadoodle⁠" Latham in the 15th round.

Now playing on the CT side, the North Americans further added to their lead by taking the pistol round. A successful Desert Eagle eco put Na`Vi back in the game and powered them to retake the lead. It looked like the game would go down to the wire, but Cloud9 were simply dominant after getting their economy in order, winning seven rounds without response to take the map, 16-10.

Cloud9 beat Na`Vi in convincing fashion

Carrying their momentum into Train, Cloud9 won the pistol round as CT and the subsequent anti-ecos to secure a 3-0 lead. Na`Vi then fought back with an inner site push, which marked the start of a dominant period for the Ukrainian team, who won seven of the next eight rounds.

After calling a tactical pause, the North Americans regained composure and started winning rounds again, with Jake "⁠Stewie2K⁠" Yip keeping the deficit to a minimum by coming out on top of a 1v1 situation in the final round with just 1hp.

Now playing on the Terrorist side, Cloud9 won the pistol round to equalize the score at 8-8, but they could not follow it up as Na`Vi hit back on eco. The North Americans did not let that put them off their game, however, and shut Na`Vi down in the gun rounds, only losing conceding one round against a full save before locking down the map.

I don't care much about the rankings since the concept of 'team invites' took place. Take ESL One as an example where G2, North & Gambit are not given the fair chance to collect points. Now, after taking up former ELEAGUE players, Liquid and Cloud9 have greatly improved their mechanics that enable them to compete with rich teams from Europe. This is probably the beginning of a new era where NA is starting to take over the reign that used to be dominated by Europe teams. And the new Optic lineup will provide American teams a better exposure on how a Europe team runs their business.
