Epsilon member Owen "smooya" Butterfield has revealed on Twitter that he will take a break "until December 2018" after failing to find a team willing to buy him out of his contract.

Owen "⁠smooya⁠" Butterfield found himself relegated to the Epsilon bench in September as the Belgium-based organisation opted to build an all-Swedish roster for the second season of the Gfinity Elite Series - leaving the British player and Cosmin-Mihai "⁠cosmeeeN⁠" Butuc out in the cold.

The former Endpoint member, who was signed by Epsilon in June, played an instrumental role in the team's title victory in the opening Gfinity Elite Series, averaging a 1.24 Rating.

smooya speaks out about his situation

But with a buyout clause set at $100,000, smooya has found himself frozen out of action, forcing the player to change his priorities and look at options outside of esports.

"I will still be playing in ESEA Main with good friends since they need my help, but I am done wasting my time," smooya told HLTV.org.

"I spent three years getting to the point where I am now, and now that I have reached this level, what do I get for it?

"I think in January I am going to enrol back and finish my college year.

"I am done trying to progress my ability."

smooya, who recently helped an Endpoint mix to finish in second place at the ESL Clash of Nations, added that he has no interest in playing for a UK team again as he expects bigger things for himself.

"What is the point in playing for a UK team? I have won everything there," he noted.

"I do not think Epsilon expect anyone to match my buyout clause, I think they are just looking for a little profit.

"I believe I have the talent to be in a top 20-25 team and, in a year, maybe in a top 10-15 team.

"But that is all gone since I am on the bench."

Imagine you have grinded your ass off for two years at a game, poured hours and hours of your time into it despite being laughed at by other countrys, told by older people in the scene you look up to that you're "just a cheating cunt, go back to school". Imagine you have put so much work in your mum has health issues and can't work you finally get a contract. They are putting together a new roster and they want you to be a part of it. You sign, are the best performing player on the team and then get benched for no reason. It's not his fault, have some epathy.

You do realize Epsilon is a pretty well known org in the scene, if you are in a tier 9999 team and they offer you a contract you take it, you would also do that, anyone would. 2k a month is also pretty fukin good. The fact that they got benched in no time is the worst part, the people behind epsilon are scums, they should not belong in the cs scene. And again this is what eplson do. He should of made sure to negotiate better terms or atleast read what he was getting himself into. U cant just look at the short side of things like he did. Yea he wanted to become pro which i totally get. I had a similar situation when i went pro in paintball. I was so eager to play pro i didnt think of anything else. It cost me big time when the team who signed me benched me just so i couldnt compete against them. I was easily a top 25 player in the usa and multipule teams tried to get me but they did basically the same thing here. Tho my buyout wasnt as much and my pay was more but i learned the hard way just like this kid is. It sucks but again its his own fault. He was a kid who made a stupid decision without thinking. It happens to most of us. Hopefully he can bounce back

Wish you the best of luck, Owen... I too think you're an incredible talent and definitely one of the top UK players now. Your best bet is the North American scene with the likes of Dephh and such. I remember playing a game with you back in 2014 at Global Elite and you nailed a 30-bomb, I had about 22 kills-ish I think. Good times, when I first spotted you and the skill you had. Try not to think too hard about it... the climb is always the hardest part of becoming a top-tier professional, but it's those times you look back on once you've achieved such success, try not to take it for granted. Be respectable to your peers and best of luck in finding a new team. :)

It isn't a lot of kills at all and it was generally an off-game from me. I played many games with Smooya back in 2013/2014 and the one I remember was when Smmoya dominated with 30+ kills, me only having 22 or something similar. I think the end result was 16-9 or 16-10 - it was a long time ago to state accurately I'm afraid.

I would thunk1so too but when businessmen sign on the dotted line they rarely derail from anything on said contract. Its sad but im sure he knew what the buyout cluse was and just thought it wouldnt affect him what so ever. Im sure even being benched he still gets paid unless he signed some crazy contract saying he doesnt get funds while on the bench. All depends on where the contracts were drawn from and by which country also signed in. Most countries won't let a contract hold a person from getting paid. There always has to be some guaranteed money. He should of really taken the time on his contract. Lessons and education are never free :(

That is a completely different scenario. Putting someone on the bench because they are threatening to kill someone or they're damaging your brand, is completely different to someone going on the bench because some members of the team are like fuck it, I want to play with some other Swedes. The contract should differentiate various scenarios of what can happen in a team. There shouldn't be one rule you apply to all 'benched' players. I'd dread to read the shit they sign I bet it's awfully put together.

It seems the Contracts are only benefitting the organisations, the players dont get "anything" more than a salary an a millons things to live up to.....Not much security if it is your only income. no. no no......... no. no. no.. This kid is exactly what is wrong with the UK cs scene.. The buyout clause was clearly a joke by epsilon put on him to try and make him feel wanted. He fell for it and signed like a cunt. Next he got dropped cause hes a toxic single player gamer. Has absolutely no positive impact on his team. Even then if you watch his individual ability he's not even that good. He thinks hes some round winning sick player, but i can tell you this right now he is no where near on the level that re1ease, wilzOOO , wez and Rattlesnk were on. I think there are even better UK cs players playing right now who have more ability and better team understanding than this kid. He will never be in a top organisation, and why? because of this bullshit hes pulling. If he hadn't have been so toxic towards the organisation paying his wages then he would have maybe been able to ask them to leave his contract and leave on mutual terms. How long is left on his contract? He could look at Bosman ruling and use it to free himself from this contract. But instead he flames the organisation paying his wages flames the sponsors affiliated to epsilon. Pathetic individual in my opinion and will never make it any where in gaming and unfortunately that is the only aspect of his life where he has any success(if thats what you can call it)... Really don't like the way he responded to the questions about rejoining the UK scene. If you can't find a team, you put your nose back to the grindstone if you really want to go pro. It's a scummy move by the org, but its not illegal yet so there was nothing stopping them. Giving up that quickly is why he would never had made it anyway.

Why did he take this contract? Isn't this his own fault ultimately? Therefore I don't feel bad for him, he knows himself he'll never be even close to good enough for 100k buyout, he comes from the UK which means the stereotype of being toxic and shit player will carry with him everywhere and make it even more difficult for orgs to take a risk on him and he isn't imo even worth 1k buyout.
