ESL speak about the hostile incident

The big subject yesterday was the attack on Shaun hostile Catron, which took place late Friday evening – ESL fires back and clears out, that Shaun hostile Catron lived in the quietest part of town.

A lot of people let the community know what they thought about the accident. On the American scene, Jason Lake from compLexity stated that ESL should take care of the players. But didn’t they? ESL picked up every team arriving by train or flight, make sure to transport them to the event in the morning and back in the evening. What the teams and players do when they reach they households, should not be ESL responsible.

David "Affentod" Hiltscher, director of community management released following statement:

"Hey all,

I'd like to shed some light on the allegations made. First of all, everyone here is shocked that such a thing happened to hostile. Hannover is one of Germany's least dangerous cities, and police activity during CeBIT is very high. To put it bluntly, hostile had incredibly bad luck.

Especially if you take into consideration that the area where he and other teams are housed is a regular residential area. Being housed in private homes is a CeBIT tradition, as there are several hundred thousand people coming to Hannover for the trade fair. Hotel capacities are very low and hotel rooms are extremely pricey and also fully booked months in advance.

So all kinds of people stay in private houses, from company executives over staff and crew of all booths to pro gamers participating in the many tournaments here. Who ever has been to one of the previous tournaments at CeBIT like Masters I & II or SEC knows this. There is nothing unprofessional or dangerous about this fact, it's just normal for a giant trade fair like CeBIT.

We shuttle players from their residences to the fair in the morning and bring them back in the evening to make sure everybody gets where he needs to, and gets there safe. For all evening activities, whatever the starting point is, common sense is a requirement. Walking the street alone at night is risky in any major city.

All rooms are booked through an agency that guarantees a certain quality. All flats and houses are in quiet residential areas. We do not book rooms in bad neighborhoods.

We are very sorry to hear what happened to hostile, and our admins were the first to join him in the hospital. I understand, that hostile's statements come from a deep sense of injustice, but please keep in mind that we have no interest whatsoever to cause our star players any harm, and that we do anything in our power to keep them safe and happy during their stay in Germany.

We wish hostile a quick recovery from the shock and hope the police does its best to catch the people who did this.

If any of you have questions about this, go ahead and post them. I'll do my best to answer them."

Should there be more talking going on about the accident, we will continue to follow the case and update you.

nice ESL, tbh you're not to blame. just pure stupidity to go into a bar and walk outside alone and in a big city where you don't even speak the language. If that wasn't stupid enough he went on to go speak to total strangers about his staying and situation in general :x

No, I don't think so. He was attacked, and he reacted like anyone should. He was angry and the easiest way was to blame ESL, though they aren't guilty.

to go for a beer isn't a crime, to do it alone either, he wasn't thinking to be assaulted later, so please do not call him stupid, it happens..... in a major or minor city! next time, i am sure, he won't be going alone :D gl and hf at cebit

Who knows how much of his story is true, it is incredibly hard to get a gun in Germany he might just have added that to grab more attention than just being punched some times.

even if there was a gun involved, it could have been a fake one, copies today are extremely well made and with panic, fear and stuff, you don't have time to notice the difference I guess. I think he doesn't realize how rare it is to meet someone with a real gun in European countries, it's quite different in USA.

Indeed. If they were 5v1 I don't think they would point a gun. They could've just hit him or something, no need for a gun. Also not many people are stupid enough to acctually bring a gun, if they get caught they can get several years in jail, getting caught for "only" hitting him and stealing his stuff doesn't usually result in a long jail time.

As hostile tried to fight back against 4 robbers, and maybe as their goal wasn't to beat him up, they pulled out the gun to make him behave. If he had handed over his stuff when he got punched, maybe there wouldn't be any need for a life threatning situation

Who tries to fight back against 4 robbers? And how many of them acctually carry guns to rob tourists? Seems a bit unlikely, that's all.

Why not fight back? Oh no I'll lie there and let'em hit me, you don't live in the real world.. A robber doesn't come up to you and say give me your money and you give him your money and he leaves. Doesn't really work like that.

You have to consider the situation. Out at night, drunk, in another country, 5v1. You don't fight back. Ok? Or maybe you would, but then again you probably think you're Chuck Norris.

Yes, also what I mean is that it's many people sure, but most of the times it's 1-3 capable of doing anything so it isn't what it looks like all the time. Or if you're unlucky you meet 5 karate kids but not that likely.

I would, can it get worse? Even if they'd beat the hell out of me, I know what I can do and I know I would do something to atleast one of them so I would be happy to have done that to the fuckers who robbed me:)

Well.. i've travelled for a lot of countries in europe (I'm spanish) and I've never gone alone for the city.. you're a tourist and a "easy" objetive for robbers. You have to think this when you're in a strange city. Almost if that city is in your country

if this wouldn't happen to a gamer or a staffmember u guys wouldn't even bother talking about it. esl is not the one to blame... it's just bad luck that can happen to anyone. These kind of things happen everywhere in the world. ps i don't think hostile is making things up, cause making a false declaration to police could get him in jail(or other punishment)

word. anyway, if they didnt have a pistol they easily could stab u. 2get a knife is very easy and the risk of being catched by police if u fucked up a stranger isnt very high. i think u guys talking bout self defence etc. will be the first who cry and run for their lives if u meet really bad guys and no "wannabe 2pac - kids" (but even this kids could be dangerous in a group of five, pushing each other)
