NiP beat Astralis; SK survive overtime vs. EnVyUs
Ninjas in Pyjamas and SK Gaming got off on the right foot at IEM Oakland after beating Astralis and EnVyUs, respectively.
The opening round of matches in Burbank began with an interesting Nordic clash between Ninjas in Pyjamas and Astralis on Overpass. The Danish team, who fielded coach Danny "zonic" Sørensen as sickness prevented Nicolai "device" Reedtz from arriving at the venue on time, came ou the brighter in the match and got out to a 3-0 lead following a successful A hold in the pistol round, with Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye getting three kills to his name.
After Ninjas in Pyjamas bought up, however, the landscape of the game changed dramatically. With Fredrik "REZ" Sterner making a few key contributions, the Swedes won seven of the following eight rounds, but Astralis tightened up their defence in the final stages of the half to keep the deficit to a minimum.

William "draken" Sundin came up huge in the second pistol round and clutched a 1v3 situation to keep his team in the lead. Surprisingly, the Danes wasted a similar advantage in their first full gun round, giving Ninjas in Pyjamas a significant economic control.
It was only when Astralis were down 7-14 that they finally managed to gain a footing in the match. The Danish team strung two rounds together, but then a Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg triple-kill put Ninjas in Pyjamas on match point - with the Swedes soon dealing the finishing blow as Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund rescued his team from a 3v5 situation with two aggressive kills.

Meanwhile, SK and Envy faced off on Cobblestone, with the Brazilians securing first blood thanks to a 1v2 clutch from Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo in the pistol round. After losing both eco rounds, Envy went on a great run that saw them eventually take the lead. SK's offense then flourished, as the Brazilians won five of the next six rounds, but the Frenchmen got back into the game and brought the deficit to 7-8.

Envy emerged from the break with plenty of tenacity and retook the lead despite losing the pistol round. After getting their economy back in order, SK improved their defense, which propelled them into a 15-12 lead, but the Frenchmen crawled back to force overtime.
The first overtime failed to determine a winner as both teams cancelled each other out. In the second overtime, SK picked up two rounds in each half to seal a hard-fought victory, one that certainly left Cédric "RpK" Guipouy, who picked up an ace and a quad-kill in overtime, with a sour taste in his mouth.
