ELEAGUE Major 2018 to use Swiss format

The Challengers Stage and the Legends Stage of the ELEAGUE Major 2018 will be played out using the Swiss format, the tournament organizer has confirmed.

Min-Sik Ko, the VP of Tournament Operations at ELEAGUE, revealed details on the format that will be used at the upcoming Major.

The decision was made to continue using the Swiss format for both the Challengers Stage (formerly known as the Main Qualifier) and the Legends Stage (formerly the group stage of the Major).

ELEAGUE will continue using the Swiss format for the Major

The Swiss format was first used at a CS:GO event during the Main Qualifier for ESL One Cologne 2016. The format was then accepted and utilized for both the Main Qualifiers and the group stages of the two Majors that were held in 2017, ELEAGUE Atlanta and PGL Krakow.

The @ELEAGUETV Major: Boston, Challengers Stage & Legends Stage (Qualifier & Group stage) will be played in swiss-format.

Consistent winning is part of being a good team even best BO1. Lose 1 or 2 BO1s and you are still fine. CSGO teams have never been (consistent). If you ever watch the leagues now, teams only occasionally go 2-0 and usually go 1-1. Being consistently winning in any situation has always been the anchor of a good franchise for ANY sport. Top teams aren't as good as they think because they shit the bed when it comes to consistency.

You're using logic that doesn't apply to CS scenarios. But, to use your own flawed views against you: Let's look at baseball. Baseball teams play each other in series, because no single game really determines who won (it's the nature of the sport). The World Series is a 7 game affair, for the very reasons you're arguing "great teams" shouldn't have to deal with. A single game for determination of who is better is an awful misrepresentation of actual facts. Look at SK, when they first entered the international scene the only map they were good on was Mirage. Everyone who played Mirage against them lost. It's an imbalance due to any number of factors, but you're being close minded. The history of CS has shown us (for nearly 20 years, mind you) that Bo1 games don't tell us about consistency. Period.

Which also is an issue with the College playoffs. Look at Auburn this season, they nearly booted GA and AL out of the playoff race entirely based on single games. GA was lucky since they got to replay AU, but AL only got into the games on grace. It just goes to show how often 1-off games can really complicate a scenario, it doesn't really counter my point it mostly enforces it.

True, awful format for a "serious" tournament. Also I would add the luck of the draw in every round plays a huge role, much greater than say a group stage where you play every other team. That is why I love the international format for a serious lan, they play every other team two times in two groups of 8. By the time they are done the favorites pretty much guaranteed to be top 4, and if some other strong team messes up they have the lower bracket to prove them selves. Last international final 4 were the top4 from the group stage.

we want the majors to be the best and fairest event of the year. Look at cologne 2016, g2 was eliminated in the groups after losing bo1s to fnatic and sk, two top4 teams at that time. They won ecs s1 (?) like a week before that, they could've easily made it to the semis. Instead, clg had a high seed, even tho their team was failing apart. The legend system is broken and pointless with 6 months between majors

People complained about old system for about year, but now that there is Swiss system, they want it back. Jesus, how stupid HLTV "analysts" are? Prime example of old groups system - ESL One Cologne: - SK, Fnatic and G2 - 3 top 4 teams at that moment in the same group, with 4th team being FaZe who were #8. - Na'Vi, F3 and Gambit getting legends spot due to other groups being shit, all of them got shrekt in QF. - Fnatic having easy opponent (Gambit) to get into semis. - Liquid having easiest run of their life, being lucky to win against slumping Na'Vi, slumping Fnatic to get into Finals + being heavily carried by s1mple. - SK getting easiest major belt of their life, rekting Liquid 16-7 16-6 (who were just lucky to be in finals), only team that wasn't shit at Cologne 2016 except SK was VP, whom SK won, but otherwise easy major and Astralis was not bad, but they had 2 standins.

Ok my comment says it kinda bluntly and stupidly Sk will have to play with felps instead of boltz, and boltz should be allowed to play had it not been for the absolute stupid minor system and all the immortals drama. Sk have stated that they're going to practise with boltz to focus on the other tournaments after the major, and therefore don't want to lose training time by playing with felps. This is the least prestigeous major in a very long time. Sk can't play with steel, astralis may have to play with zonic and sk with a player that they aren't going to practice with. Don't quote me on this but guardian has said himself that winning that major wouldn't be much more than an average tournament with a big pricepool

Swiss system has some problems, but we should not forget that GSL also had a lot of problems (win 2 bo1s and get to playoffs, groups of death). I think both can be fixed with better seeding, though.

Swiss > GSL GSL is the most boring and predictable thing ever, basically top seed wins the group most of the time, weakest team gets out in 2 games and you get the BO3 decider between the two "middle of the pack" teams.

Yeah it is. But having some upsets is even better (not that upsets can't happen in GSL, but they are a bit more likely in swiss system), to be sport/competitive gaming is great when a weaker team starts to go hard on the expected favorite. It is more likely to happen on BO1 (BO3 and BO5 are great) and to begin the Major it's not a bad bad thing that some upsets happen. It's not like "great" teams have to lose 3 BO1 to get eliminated so basically 0 or maybe 1 GREAT team will be out after swiss phase - FaZe at the previous Major was just complete trash, same thing likely would have happened on BO3 as they went 0-3 ... (losers game on GSL was BO1, so you could be eliminated after 2 BO1 which is a lot worse + some really bad seedings on GSL whereas games are drawn round after round on Swiss which is great).

Here's my idiea for the Swiss system: *All matches that decide wether a team goes through to the playoffs or gets eliminated will be B03 *All initial matches and matches that only affect the record of the team will be BO1 Example: *Initial matches and 1-0, 0-1, 1-1 matches are BO1 *2-0, 0-2, 2-1, 1-2, 2-2 matches will be B03 This way teams and players will not get tired an bored from too many matches and also they won't be able to proggres further in the tournamnet by playing just one map.

Good way to improve it. If the Major could last 2 weeks or even a bit more : whole swiss system on BO3, BO3 quarters, BO5 semis, BO7 final - this is the Major the biggest tourney of the year, let's play the whole pool - and BO5 3rd place decider.

I also like it. Best format imo (better than round robin and way better than GSL especially with unbalanced groups we have had in the past) Only way to improve it is #229 or make every game of that Swiss phase be BO3 but Major will last like 2 weeks (BO3 quarters, BO5 semis, BO7 final and BO5 3rd place decider).

It would be great if the in the first stage are group of 4 teams and there will be BO3 between each of those. Its the major championship, the teams should have chance to compete versus other teams not only on one map. And the final match BO3 as well
