ESL announce Pro League rule changes

Certain rules regarding roster changes and locks have been changed for the upcoming season of ESL Pro League, the tournament organizer revealed today.

The seventh season of ESL Pro League is set to start on February 13th, with 14 teams competing in both regions—Europe and North America. The team list for the North American division is already finalized, while teams such as Space Soldiers, Natus Vincere and GODSENT are set to fight for a spot in the European division in the coming days

The WESA rulebooks, which define the ESL Pro League, have been updated

The decision was made to revamp some of the rules regarding rosters for the upcoming season, with the following changes to the WESA Rulebook and the WESA Transfer Regulations cited in the announcement:

It is no longer possible to down/up from/to academy teams

A loan exception was added in national competitions

The Emergency Transfer rule was modified to allow transfers in special circumstances that otherwise would be prohibited

A Roster Submission Deadline has been added (it has been extended to the 7th of February to give teams that attended the Boston Major more time)

The first change means that teams will no longer be able to use their academy players freely during the season, something we saw utilized by Envy when Ali "⁠hAdji⁠" Haïnouss stood in for Alexandre "⁠xms⁠" Forté. A loan exception for national competitions isn't something that is tied to ESL Pro League, but Olympic-esque single-nationality tournaments such as WESG and TWC, which WESA could oversee in the future.

The "Emergency Transfer", which was seen in action during the sixth season of ESL Pro League multiple times, has also been defined in greater detail, while the deadline to submit rosters has been pushed back slightly, and will now be on February 7.

The academy rule seems a shit rule...

Imagine G2 make their academy team the current Envy roster. Apex has a bad day. Bring in Scream/RPK. Suddenly win.

Ahahah ok but that's never going to happen. Academy teams are full of young and upcoming players, if an org has an academy team why is it a problem to give a shot to a youngster if one player has issues? Instead of rescheduling the match or just forfeiting it it's better to play it...

If a player has issues i.e. cajunb. Then after a big lan where you fail bring in a player from the academy team mertz in this case. They are designed only as an extra 5 guys when your current 5 suck. But only to be used for full roster swaps, not temporary boosts.

Who cares about ESL? I mean go stream on youtube or facebook whatever your doing these days and getting less viewers than people who are rebroadcasting your shit tournaments on twitch. I was never a fan of ESL but knowing that this is hurting them and they will die off soon and become almost competently irrelevant makes me extremely excited for the future of eSports.
