The Majors: Ideas for the future

With the ELEAGUE Major in Boston behind us, we asked different members of the community to share their thoughts on what could be done so future Majors remain the most prestigious events of the circuit.

After three long weeks in Atlanta and Boston, the first tournament of the new year, and the first Major of the two this year, is behind us. Looking back, the ELEAGUE Major left us several great memories including one of the most memorable finals in the history of the Majors, the crowning of the first North American team as Major champions, and the story of Quantum Bellator Fire, a rag-tag CIS team that went from being the tournament underdogs to finishing top 8.

The Majors have been criticized for not being as prestigious as in the past

Looking towards the future, we asked several community members to give their input on how Valve's flagship tournament can remain the game's crown jewel. Players Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo, Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt, Finn "karrigan" Andersen, and Martin "STYKO" Styk, as well as coach Wilton "zews" Prado and broadcast talent Anders "Anders" Blume, Jason "moses" O'Toole, and Janko "YNk" Paunović give their thoughts on CS:GO's biggest events of the year.

Some of the topics discussed in the video are the Minors, 24-team Majors, sticker money and new ways to fund the prize pool, tournament formats, and coaching, among others. Watch the video below:

Valve Should Secure the teams spot to the major. That would be nice, There a multibillion dollar company i'm sure they could easily assist teams and players to make sure they can attend the major.

why would I inform you of when a uk player gets into major qual? firstly NiP didn't even make it to the last major quals. secondly the fact you have to try and compare my nationality to the csgo scene shows that you know I am right as you cant respond with any logical mature response for discussion

Good idea. Maybe they shouldnt even up the prizepool. I think they just need to introduce a tracker for stickermoney. Eventhough 1 mill $ is a lot of money, in the current circuit it feels like nothing special. Feels bad to say this, but right now prizepool=prestige.

interesting point by moses about randomizers, don't know what to think about it yet. I actually agree that no team should simply have a map that they never ever prepare for (this would also mean that valve has to replace nuke and rework cobble for this to work though). What is really undebatable is that group stages need BO3, why not just have 2 matches played at the same time so it doesn't take too much time? Which format doesn't really matter that much in the end, Swiss system with reseeding would probably be the best though imo.

Some would say that even Gambit (and especially Immortals that disbanded) wasn't as competitive 6 months later and they were the Major's winner though, but teams getting to semi or to the final of the Major have won one or 2 BO3 (after the 3 or 6 BO1 swiss games they won depending on the fact they played or not the Challengers stage) and proved themselves more than 5-8th finishers that only won in BO1. As long as changes are announced before (like announcing now for January's 2019 Major, but not applying a rule to July's 2018 one, like do not remove legends status from teams that finished 5-8th last week as rules were the rules, but announce that teams will have to reach at least the semis in July if they want to be legends for January 2019 Major). Major including the Challengers phase (making it to 24 teams) was great for teams like TyLoo (even though they couldn't come to play, they got stickers) or Misfits, but it was silly changing the rules after everything was done on the Minors. Things should have been set clearly before the regional Minors.

fallen: create points system like in dota, for example nip won oakland but they lost online and won't play at major moses: combine region minors into 1 minor ynk: some bulshit about regions like ppl complain that cis is a region anders: valve has to step up ynk: remove bo1, teams have bigger map pool it should be bo3 for example big played only inferno in krakow and make legends, also we saw teams that reached legends and did nothing for 6 months anders: swiss or gsl both should have bo3 moses: randomizer for maps, teams have bigger map pool, prepare for more maps, this major we had a lot of interno, mirage and no nuke etc. nbk: i like 24 teams at major, helps teams from diffrent regions to play at major, points system with invites and global minor styko: legends system needs change, top8 give too much advantage, because next major is 6 months later and teams can become really bad, bigger reward, change stickers so you can buy finalists sticker longer than group stage teams or sth like that fallen: roster locks should be changed, gives boltz example etc. ynk: roster locks, same as fallen zews: coaching rule, full time coaching is too OP, but 4x30 seconds pauses are too short ynk: timing of majors, there will be always someone who will complain karrigan: major should be at the end of season and then 2 months of break for roster changes etc and start new season fallen: valve do much for dota, they should involve in csgo as well, they should bring some ideas from dota, stickers are outdated, we arent 5-7 times less than before its 18 minutes long so you better watch it later I might missed something

I really like Fallens Idea, but in that case not a single team should receive invites to tournaments. It would be unfair to all upcoming teams if the already established always get free points since they always get a free entry.

But now it’s unfair that a upcoming team in CIS or Asia gets a free major spot but an upcoming in EU has no chance.

Fallens idea is really bad for upcomming teams like QBF, Vega etc.... Region spots are stupid in some way... asian specific. Moses idea to have all minors mixed is great. also top level teams get a free invite into a lot of events and are still top even if irrelevant now(VP). I would like a CS world tour... where local scenes are promoted like a festival and then there is big teams coming and playing them... if you win you move on in the tour... if you lose you are out and will get replaced local teams at the next station.

I think what he meant is a system where you have region spots and this seed spots based on tier 1 tournments of the season. For me the most fair system would be: Legends Stage: > Reduce the number of legends teams to 4 (semifinalists only); > 4 spots based on the points of the teams on the season; > 8 spots based on the Challengers Stage. Challengers Stage: > 8 spots to the group stages exits teams of the legends stage; > 8 spots for the winners of the minors mixed.

Rather a system that benefits know strong teams than one like now that gives no name teams free spots if the are from CIS or Asia but due to number of slots will always leave strong team out in EU.

BO5 final, BO3 3rd place decider (at least). If you want to make the Major itself 2 weeks of effective play then : BO3 swiss phase, BO3 quarters, BO5 semis, BO7 final (at least BO5) and BO5 3rd place decider. But in such a case Major would last close to 4 weeks with the 24 teams challengers phase a few days before.

A third place decider would be really good, but I think a best of 7 would actually decrease the quality of play. As it is most teams look sloppy on the last map on a best of 5

Yeah that's why BO5 is more realistic (and since Valve has kept that BO3 - even when going from a 250.000$ to a 1M major with 350.000$ more to win if you finish 1st instead of 2nd - + that useless showmatch before the final, then getting a BO5 final and 3rd place BO3 decider would be a great change IMO). BO7 is too much for players in one day.
2018-02-01 17:32

Making a double elim best of 3 bracket like the dota international would be perfect. Sure it would be a lot of time, but when you are playing in a studio when you normally would have just been doing qualifications, its not like viewership would be any lower. Raising the total number of teams and allowing for more legend teams would also ensure that the minors supplying teams will just be there to allow up and coming teams a way in, but not a disproportionate number. Finally, some sort of crowd funding ideas to raise the prize pool and make it more prestigious will go a long way.
2018-02-01 17:23

I thing that i think should be fixed is putting Major before big breaks. Now we have a short time between Major and start EPL, some qualifying is happenning and several teams are making some changes in their roster (North, Misfits, nV).

This. Sean said Misfits couldn't prepare really well but yeah some organizations probably want, for the security of their investment, to know if their players are qualified to the Major to renew contracts.

No swiss system, 4 groups with 4 teams, 2 legends and 2 challengers on each group. Two quarters each day, two semis in one day(maybe BO5), BO5 final

I would like to see on Major for example: 1) bigger map pool 2) final bo5 or bo7 3) to try add some map with hostages, make something different 4) bigger motivation }bigger price pool , 5) less legends ,only for best four teams 6)better group format ( 2 groups , each group 8 teams- with rondom genarator of maps and also each team will play each map only once. . Playoff: 1A vs. 4B and so on. .. 7) 3rd decider match, better for players and for people in arena, they Will see two matches. Now if they go visit the final ..match can end 16:5 16:5 And IT is over ,,, if valve make bo5 final and add 3rd decider ,should be good shedule . It is bad to buy a ticket only for one match and make full day with stupid casters match..only my opinion LETS TALK ABOUT IT AND DO STH TOGETHER FOR BETTER MAJORS

I really like FalleNs ideas, and this "only top4 should be legends". Major isn't so "fancy" as it could be and lets be honest, CS could be next Dota/LoL if it comes to popularity or prize money.

valve needs to do compendium sales like they do for Dota TI but do it for CS major as well it will generate so much revenue

The things what Fallen and Zews said are so true so important, idk... I hope valve sees this video and does some improvements to the cs go community. I would be very happy if the things that Fallen and Zews said get changed.. :)

How to fix majors: 1. Less strict rules about rosters 2. Different format for group stage 3. Proper seeding 4. Sound booths during playoffs EZ best major

Uhm i was surprised that Fallen didn't mention the time frames at all. SK had to play insane B03's with overtimes then had to wait 5-6 hours until the next BO3 and do that, at that point even i was tired of just watching i can't imagine what it is for them. Sad that they didn't point this out.

No more QF and SF on same day. Every one who has won QF4 loses in SF2 everytime its on the same day.

The Swiss system worked out fine for me, with a lot of action. Add a lower bracket af the group stages would be awesome, and a bo5 final.
