FaZe to playoffs over North; Cloud9 beat Renegades in lower bracket semifinal

FaZe secured a spot in the playoffs after beating North, 16-8 on Inferno and 16-7 on Mirage, while Cloud9 secured a victory over Renegades in three maps, winning Mirage 16-8, losing Inferno 8-16, and closing it out on Train, 16-6.

The match on the main stream kicked off on Inferno as FaZe and North got ready to face off. The match started with the European combine taking the early lead in the match, winning the first five rounds of the match before North was able to get on the board. The Danes, on the attacking side, didn’t back down, and despite giving one more round up, stayed in the fight by bringing it to 4-6 after 10 rounds. Tied 7-7, both teams had pretty good buys going into the last round of the half which ultimately went to FaZe.

Finn "karrigan" Andersen, FaZe’s most in-form player on Inferno, had a huge pistol round, getting three headshots in the 3vs3 after-plant on A to close out the round for his team. FaZe then brought out the steamroller and manhandled North on the attacking side, giving up but a single round en route to a 16-8 map victory.

FaZe secured a playoff spot against North

Once again, FaZe won the pistol round, making it three out of three in the series, this time on the attacking side of Mirage. karrigan & Co. once again took the early lead, winning anti-ecos and the first gun round for a 5-0 lead. North were finally able to get on the board in the eighth round, 1-7, but weren’t able to follow it up as Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer won a 1vs2, outclassing Daniel "mertz" Mertz on B by faking a bomb plant and killing the rushing Danish AWPer right as the timer was running out. FaZe kept their momentum going and despite giving up a few rounds, took the half 11-4.

North kept their hopes alive winning the second pistol round of the map in a B play, and followed it up taking the anti-ecos for a 7-11 partial. The first gun round ended up with the bomb dropped on A and a 2vs2 between Philip "aizy" Aistrup and mertz and karrigan and Ladislav "GuardiaN" Kovács, which finally ended up going the way of FaZe. It was finally GuardiaN & co. who took the map, 16-7, to close it out 2-0 ahead of the group’s upper-bracket final.

On the B stream, Cloud9 kicked their bout off with Renegades by winning the CT-side pistol round on Cache, and taking a quick 3-0 after the first gun round, and 4-0 after the anti-eco ahead of the second buy round from Renegades. The North American squad took the 7-0 lead before Renegades could do anything, and after just two rounds given up, Cloud9 were right back at it, closing the half 12-3.

Renegades were able to get a lifeline, winning the pistol round, but after the three anti-ecos the match went back to what it had been before the half, as Cloud9 took three rounds, including a 2vs5 by Tarik "tarik" Celik and Jake "Stewie2K" Yip to get on match point. The Australian-American-Norwegian side was able to further close the gap, getting eight rounds, but that was it as Cloud9 then closed it out with a successful B strike, 16-8.

Cloud9 closed it out despite losing their pick, Inferno

On Inferno it was once again Cloud9 who took the early lead, this time on the Terrorist side, after a successful A take and bomb defense in the pistol round. This time around, though, Renegades did not allow Cloud9 to run away in the scoreboard, as a CZ75 triple by Justin "jks" Savage helped give his team the forcebuy win, which they were able to build upon for an early 3-1 lead before the first buy round. Little by little, though, Cloud9 got the match back on track, taking the lead 4-3, and putting Renegades on an eco. The North American squad then kicked it into gear, getting ahead 7-3 after 10 rounds. Renegades didn’t give up, though, and put up a wall to take the lead at the half, 8-7.

Renegades kept the trend going, and increased their lead to 9-7 after the pistol round. Up 11-7, Renegades were then able to increase their lead in the first gun round, 12-7, with a big round by Joakim "jkaem" Myrbostad who got the three first kills as well as the exit on Stewie2K. jks & Co. were finally able to take control of the map, Cloud9’s pick, winning 16-8 and push it to the decider.

Renegades were unable to put up a fight on Train

Cloud9 won the first pistol on Train, and took a quick 3-0 lead on the CT side with a third round four-kill retake by Stewie2K. the North American side then further increased their lead to 5-0, and kept the trend going after a failed fast play on A by Renegades, which Timothy "autimatic" Ta and tarik dismantled with a double and a triple, respectively, kept Cloud9 in the driver’s seat. The boys got on the board for the first time in the eighth round, but were instantly reset. With Cloud9’s confidence soaring, the North Americans took the half 13-2.

After a double, Noah "Nifty" Francis found himself in a 1vs1 against Tyler "Skadoodle" Latham, and was able to defuse the bomb as the Cloud9 sniper spammed the smoke. The North Americans, buying pistols the next round, were able to get the match back on track, winning the round and following it up to get on match point against pistols. Renegades showed their teeth one last time, as jkaem, Karlo "USTILO" Pivac, and Aaron "AZR" Ward got early CZ75 frags to keep it going. Renegades got a fifth on the board, but were against ten match points by Cloud9. It was finally, as expected, the North Americans who won, closing it out 16-6 to win the series.

Nope, this is the lower bracket final because C9 and SK/GB lost a game. The upper bracket finals play for a semi spot and the loser gets to the quarters.

It's funny how Faze is so very dominant against weaker teams, which is basically every team right now. That's a really good team with great fundamentals. Weird they aren't winning everything they play now that SK is crumbling.

C9 has a chance to take SK. C9 looks comfortable. Stewie had a really excellent game and his confidence seems to affect the rest of the teams the most. SK don't look that good and it's not like they haven't done it before many times. I'm not getting my hopes up too high but they have a pretty good shot. 60/40 SK? Probably depends on the map pick. Teams seem to have figured out C9's T side on inferno so I'd try to stick to my tried and true Mirage/Train picks. Especially since SK will probably allow it.
