Group B: NRG send B.O.O.T-d[S] packing; MVP PK sweep Chiefs to advance

NRG and MVP PK move on through the Group B lower-bracket at IEM Sydney 2018, while B.O.O.T-d[S] and Chiefs are eliminated.

NRG and BOOT-d[S] battled for survival through the lower-bracket of Group B, starting on BOOT-d[S] map pick, Cache.  A pair of doubles from Jacob "FugLy" Medina and Ethan "Ethan" Arnold secured the T pistol on the B entry, piling four more to their 5-0 lead. BOOT-d[S] retaliated in attempt to reduce their deficit, but Tsvetelin "CeRq" Dimitrov’s quad kill in the post-plant further pushed NRG’s T-side aggression to seal the 13-2 half.

NRG stay alive in the Group B lower-bracket

In the second half, BOOT-d[S] slapped NRG in the pistol to then win the following anti-ecos for three, 8-13. NRG finally stamped their first in their buy round and pressed on to secure mappoint, with help from Vincent "Brehze" Cayonte's triple-kill to eventually secure map one 16-5.

The series moved on to Inferno, where NRG T-side secured their pistol but BOOT-d[S] Kumaresan "Tommy" Ramani claimed four heads with the Deagle on A to even things out 1-1. NRG didn’t seem rattled and racked up four in a row to take the 5-1 lead. BOOT-d[S] economy was stable enough to put an end to NRG’s streak with three, but could not contest for the lead as Damian "daps" Steele and co. secured the first half, 9-6.

NRG started their second half by winning the CTs second pistol and racking up the anti-ecos for a comfortable 12-6 lead. Although BOOT-d[S] made some noise with the following round win, NRG struck back to inch closer to match point, in which they eventually did to stay alive through Round 2.

The other Group B elimination match saw MVP PK snag the CT pistol from Chiefs map pick, Nuke, and press through the anti-ecos for a dominating defensive first half with eight straight before Chiefs answered back. The two teams then traded rounds, in which Chiefs finally found some footing on the back of Euan "sterling" Moore’s quad-kill to end the half 5-10.

The sides switched and so the momentum as Chiefs shut down everything MVP PK could throw at the defense to equalize the score (10-10). Tyler "tucks" Reilly and co. secured two more before MVP PK snapped out of it to finally answer back. The two teams then traded rounds before MVP PK established their T-side dominance to edge Nuke 16-14 for the series lead.

MVP PK kicked off their map pick, Inferno, where their T pistol was secured with a quick entry on A. MVP PK went on to secure the following round before Chiefs ended the chaos on banana to split the lead (1-2). The dust then settled whereas MVP PK took the reigns of the offense and surged through the first half for a dominating 12-3 score at the half.

In the second half, MVP PK’s CT-side came out red-hot and shut down Chiefs on banana to secure the second pistol. Chiefs were able to respond with a quick fix on A, in which the T-side corralled with four straight (8-13). In the end, MVP PK managed to pick up what was left of their economy to claim three in a row to survive through Group B.

Nothing much to write home about. NRG just played good, fundamental counter-strike and were able to out-aim their opponents for the majority of the series. They got complacent a few times on inferno, but in the end, it was still a reasonably easy game. Daps has been a huge surprise so far in this tournament - the third highest player in Sydney with a huge 1.34 rating, which is unbelievable for an IGL -. But really, every player in the team has in one way or another played to their standard. G2 will be a much harder test, but if you want to become a top team, you need these tests to get better and improve your game.
