flusha: "We just can't play default rounds"

We spoke with Robin "flusha" Rönnquist after his team bowed out to FaZe in the quarter-finals of IEM Sydney 2018, learning about the difficulties they are having playing defaults and the addition of Dust2.

The Swedish side was fairly comfortable in the group stage, only losing a series to Astralis after already claiming a spot in the playoffs. On the stage, Maikil "Golden" Selim's squad struggled against FaZe and went out of the tournament 0-2.

flusha thinks that the Dust2 meta is going to change over the coming months

A day after the loss, we talked to Robin "flusha" Rönnquist about the match and got his thoughts on balancing individual and team practice on a limited timeframe.

Let's start with the game you had yesterday, against FaZe. I guess if we disregard the comeback at the end you looked pretty flat, so what happened that you struggled so much against FaZe?

Honestly, it's just the T-sides. We don't really have the confidence to play our defaults. If we do a set rounds, where everyone knows what to do, we have shown that we win those rounds, both on Mirage and Cache. We just can't play default rounds and the punished us.

How come you can't play default rounds? Is it just against FaZe or is it your general gameplay that struggles at the moment?

It's the gameplay at the moment, and if we play against FaZe that is a much better team than the most are, they are stronger individually, they are going to have confidence in their own skill and it's going to be harder for us to play our defaults, they are going to give us less easy peeks and do less mistakes. They are just a harder team to play defaults against.

The last couple of times you guys were interviewed, there was a thought put out that you are practicing more individually than as a team, playing FPL and stuff like that. Is that still your philosophy, is it going to change?

So before StarLadder we played a lot and focused on the team, we didn't really focus on our individual skill that much. Now, lately, maybe we practiced a lot individually and not so much as a team, and also we focused on Dust2 coming into this event a lot. We also didn't have a lot of days to practice for this because of Marseille, not enough time to stay on top.

You mentioned Dust2 - you played the first official, top-tier LAN map on it against G2. So what do you think about the map so far, is it changed, what's the meta like?

At the moment, we are playing it just as the old Dust2. Obviously, it's not going to stay like that, we are going to need at least one or two months to figure out how to play the map. Right now it's just like old Dust2, either you take long early and take peeks, or go into a B split or cat push. It was the same Dust2 as always, but I think the meta is going to change over the coming months.

Do you see any team that the map fits particularly, that could be the upcoming Dust2 team?

I think mousesports are going to be great on Dust2, they have a double AWP setup and it's a great individual map and they have five really good players. It should be a good map for them. I also think that Astralis is going to be good on it, they are going to have a new tactical approach to it and do stuff that no one else has done. I guess they are going to be the tactical choice and mouz is going to be the individual choice.

Even though this isn't the best result for you guys, it's still a playoff spot, similar to Marseille. Comparing that to your online results, at least in Pro League, those have been kind of shaky, ECS is somewhat better, but still not amazing. What do you think is the difference for you guys online and offline right now?

I don't know really, maybe offline we calm down a bit and try to do less mistakes, play as a team. Meanwhile online, everyone wants to take initiative, do their own thing, everyone is feeling at home online, they have confidence in what they want to do. Maybe that's the difference.

They already did great. Reaching quarters in 2018 is a good result as far as I'm concerned since you can get matched up against Faze/Astralis/Mousesports/Fnatic and losing to any of those teams is nothing to be ashamed about as long as it wasnt a total stomp. The scene is at one of the most competitive points it's ever been.

Golden still looks and plays like a scared puppy, if you have an IGL like that, how do you play with confidence? I don't think Golden gets much respect, I can see him being replaced with Xizt.

fnatic won IEM because of KRiMZ and flusha, you can have whatever brillian strats, but if you have no difference makers - it will not work. How is it Golden's fault?..

Difference makers can only make a difference if there are brilliant strats. If ur players are playing good then whats the point of strats?

LUL i think u misunderstood my reply, u literally said that fnatic players arent doing well how is it golden's fault but if golden's strats are not on point then how can the players keep performing well because they are getting outplayed. If u want the players to make a difference then there should be no need of an igl and strats

KRiMZ and flusha hitting crazy shots has nothing to do with strats, they just fail to overaim their opponents, that's why you do need the others to be good as well, instead Lekr0 is mediocre and JW - now, when you can't win without a good sniper - is not any special. It has nothing to do with Golden, it's their individual slump.

no it has all to do with golden their t side is atrocious this guy literally has zero strat on t side. causing them to be stomped on t side half of every single map.golden calls has been terrible since IEM and it appear causing internal conflict in the team they arent playing with their usual confidence and i feel they might no longer trust golden calls. GOLDEN WAS By far not the reason why they won IEM . IEM was won by their individual firepower and heroics. golden was the reason when they won it so hard he was just being a bot fnatic was playing 4v5 entire time. flusha had to go godmode to barely win a bo5 against faze. stop overrating golden golden was literally carried to win IEM. see once the other player dont perform at a god mode they cant win games cause their IGL golden is thrash.

tbh nt just xizit i literally will give anyone a chance over golden now. he had his opportunity but he ddint try to improve at all. at DH he already realize their t side is atrocious and yet here at IEM Sydney same thing happened and it appear to even affect the player confidence level in playing in their matches. i literally will give anyone a chance over golden now even for better or worse.

Let's find out how many T rounds fnatic won at the last 2 tournaments. Marseille: 64 out of 154 (41,6%) Sydney: 37 out of 96 (38,5%) Now let's see how many T rounds NiP won at the last 3 tournaments with xizt: Blast: 20 out of 53 (37,7%) ESL S6: 32 out of 75 (42,7%) summit: 28 out of 76 (36,8%) You know, xizt as an IGL does not look like a saviour ;-)

Not really , their form has been going down every week , they were at their peak at katowice , still great at wesg even tho it was a t2event , fine at marsielle , but pathetic at sydney. They are at their lowest point right now. I just hope they qualify for ecs finals , but i dont see it happening

i dont think so. other teams can easily leave fnatic behind. they had to win at least 1 map against g2 but they lost 2-0 now g2 and faze have 6 games left and they are on 21 points while nip has 5 games left and they too are on 21 points. on the other hand fnatic has 2 games left and are on 27. and even beating godsent 2-0 isnt that easy looking at how fnatic has been going 1-1 almost every online match

If fnatic beat godsent 2-0,then they will have 33 points.in that case mouz and godsent can't reach that much points. So remaining teams are G2,NIP and Faze. NIP's remaining matches are against Faze,G2 and 1 map against VP. If they win all, they will have 36 points and qualify, but if they lose 1 map, both fnatic and NIP will have same points and fnatic will qualify becasue fnatic 2-0 NIP. So NIP needs to 5-0, then G2 needs to 4-0 NV & Mouz and finally Faze needs to go 4-0 against Godsent & NV. So if fnatic 2-0 godsent, they have high chance to qualify. But if they lose 1 map, then others have high chance over fnatic

Well krimz (i think) Tweeted that because the form that the team has been the last month. U should know that lol. And playing without confidence? On the default t sides, maybe. But thats not the problem even tho the default has been looking bad (much better this event). But ofc he tweeted that if they have been playing bad the last month? lol

guess flusha might be hinting golden exit. just see their social media seems like there is internal conflict within the team. team no longer play with their usual confidence. doubt the team still trust golden with his calls after he not improving at all for months since IEM. literally was carried hard to win IEM and became overrated but once the others dont play as godly as they did in IEM fnatic just cant win playing 4v5 with golden the bot igl with zero stats and atrocious calling throughout the map espically on tside.

at least faze t side is actually decent cause they got an igl that can actually call strats and not someone like golden with zero strats causing fnatic having atrocious t half on almost every single map.

not 0 strats , fnatic won katowice because of his strats. but he hasnt come up with anything new since then i think thats why they became bad and now they got a break and they will bouce back

they didnt stop giving him credit . krimz has been playing insane and in the grandfinal flusha played godly and they barely won a bo5 against faze. if golden was as good as u said they didnt need miracle individual performance from the others to win the tournament instead if u watched all the matches golden actually cost them alot of rounds espically on t side as usual he always lost them the round having man advantage cause of his stupid calls.
