North to try out international roster in Valencia with mixwell

Oscar "⁠mixwell⁠" Cañellas will be North's fifth player at DreamHack Open Valencia as the Danish organisation plans to try out an international roster, it has been announced.

The Spanish player will be replacing Daniel "⁠mertz⁠" Mertz, whose future with North is now unclear.

According to North, the move is the result of coach Alexander "⁠ave⁠" Holdt's decision to "test new dynamics" before the next tournament season, in which the team will attend DreamHack Masters Stockholm and the FACEIT Major.

mixwell will play for North in Valencia

The team's line-up for the Stockholm event will be determined only during the player break, next month, when mertz's future will also be decided, North Director of Esports Jonas "⁠whimp⁠" Svendsen said in a statement.

“Óscar is an experienced and skilled player, and I am happy that he will be playing with us in Valencia," whimp added.

"The trend in rosters is moving towards a more International outlook, and in our current situation, Alexander and I felt that the last event before the player break, would be a good time to change up the dynamics and see how the players react to a new structure.

“We have an important autumn coming up, with a lot of big tournaments, including the Major, and with the lack of consistency that we have been showing we can’t leave any stones unturned.

"I want to see how the team fares in a different setting and to break up the current dynamics."

The announcement comes just days after North were sent packing at ESL One Cologne in the group stage following defeats to fnatic and MIBR. It was the team's first group stage exit at an offline competition in six months, ending a successful run that included a first-place finish at DreamHack Open Tours and a semi-final run at StarSeries i-League Season 5.

mertz has been part of North's main team since January, when he was promoted from the academy roster to replace René "⁠cajunb⁠" Borg. He has averaged a 1.08 rating on LAN since then, leading the team in Kiev with a 1.18 rating to pick up an Exceptionally Valuable Player (EVP) nod.

North will attend the Spanish event with:

The magisk and Konfig I agree with. I personally thought CajunB should of been changed. He was becoming inconsistent and seemed to have a toxic atmosphere surrounding him. As for removing Mertz, I have no clue what the logic behind it is. Unless he's absolutely toxic and was dragging the team down(does not come across as it) then I can't see why you would keep Aizy who let's be honest. Came into the team as a star player and certainly has not lived up to that billing. Mertz is young and not fully experienced. He's needs a good full year of playing tier 1 and 2 teams to really know how good he's going to be. Removing him now means you might as well never have bothered with academy teams. If you are not willing to give them the time to fully adjust and prove themselves, you are just throwing money down the drain and ruining someone's career for the foreseeable future.
