Liquid edge past Astralis in overtime to book playoff spot

Liquid are through to the New Champions Stage at the FACEIT Major after defeating Astralis 19-15 on Inferno.

The stand-out match of the 2-0 pool, featuring two of the current top three teams in the world, began with a dominant start from Liquid, who cruised to a 3-0 lead after a well-executed B execute in the pistol round.

The North American side remained in control when the game hit the gun rounds, catching Astralis' players off-guard multiple times. Liquid kept dictating the tempo, with the Danes finally getting on the board in the 10th round, courtesy of a 1v2 clutch by Andreas "⁠Xyp9x⁠" Højsleth, after a third timeout by Lukas "⁠gla1ve⁠" Rossander had been called.

Astralis followed that up with another round after playing aggressively across the map, but then their streak came to an end as Nick "⁠nitr0⁠" Cannella picked up a triple-kill in a B execution. The North Americans were in control for the remainder of the half, taking an impressive 13 rounds into the break.

Liquid had to work hard for the victory after enjoying a 13-2 lead

gla1ve's troops were now on the Terrorist side and it was their time to shine. Liquid appeared to have run out of gas as they were simply unable to handle Astralis' pace, bringing the deficit to a solitary round after a flawless start to the half.

It looked like Liquid would finally get something going in the next round, but gla1ve pulled off a massive 1v3 clutch to restore parity at 13-13. Still, the North Americans refused to throw in the towel and finally found some stability, winning two rounds in a row to hit match point. With no room for mistake, Astralis responded with a successful archside push towards CT spawn before overcoming a 2v4 deficit in the final round to force overtime.

The momentum was now clearly in Astralis' favour, but Liquid were unwilling to let the game slip away: nitr0's side battled to a 3-0 half as CTs and followed that up with a round as Terrorists to seal a hard-fought victory that puts them through to the playoffs.

+1 It may have looked awful for both their CT sides in regulation but it looked more like stellar T sided play than bad CT sided play. Just the two best teams in the world fighting it out, great game to watch

I couldnt watch.. but how did liquid throw a 13-2 lead???

both teams made alot of mistakes on their ct side and playing really well on their t side. glaive won a 1v3 on T that shouldn't have happened and there was some round where dupreeh on T where he opened up a round with a 3k that should never have happened, check out the vod m8 :)

I will thanks. So basically liquid should have closed it earlier. Still respect for astralis. Against them it’s never over till you actually reach 16 rounds(or win ot obviously).
