Astralis star Nicolai "⁠device⁠" Reedtz has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of IEM Chicago 2018 by HLTV.org and betway.

The Danish AWPer won the race for the award for his remarkable consistency throughout the tournament, especially in the playoffs, in which he was Astralis' top performer with a 1.19 rating.

Russel "⁠Twistzz⁠" Van Dulken was a leading candidate for the accolade prior to the best-of-five final, but his 0.88 rating in the match saw him slide out of contention.

device wins his tenth MVP medal

Peter "⁠dupreeh⁠" Rasmussen, who enjoyed a strong start to the tournament but had Astralis' worst playoff rating, and Andreas "⁠Xyp9x⁠" Højsleth were also in the running for the award.

device, who averaged a 1.15 rating in Chicago, featured in the stats leaderboards in three categories, KDD (+41), total kills (248) and total AWP frags (103).

This brings device's medal count to ten, with the 23-year-old having been named the MVP of four events this year before IEM Chicago: ECS Season 5 Finals, ELEAGUE Premier, FACEIT Major and BLAST Pro Series Istanbul.

S1mple's MVP in Asia Championships is easily the most undeserved in 2018. Lekro, ScreaM and byali all played better overall and this tournament was right after a tournament on which s1mple won the MVP and was a runner-up as well. This is not a ranking of potential but a ranking of factual skill. NiKo has a higher potential and a higher ceiling but he also has lower lows which he btw visits regularly. device is more consistent and has higher lows and lower highs but he reaches his highs more consistent than NiKo reaches his. Therefor he's by facts the better player compared to NiKo. Device doesn't really show his skills much since what he does works. But at least he does his job every match. This can't be said for NiKo. EDIT: This is ofc in the context of a yearly ranking which should consider the year in its fullest. Both counting lows and highs.

Even though the ratings made dupreeh look better in the Major playoffs, he wasn't, they were neck and neck if you go through it map by map and round by round. There were only a few maps where dupreeh had a slightly better rating (along with both standing out a lot on one map each against FaZe), which is also a result of some anti-eco rounds dupreeh had. So dupreeh didn't make up the difference from the group stage, device stayed ahead of him the whole time. Furthermore, looking at the rounds and map wins that actually brought Astralis the title, device beats dupreeh quite handily there. It wasn't even as close a race as people make it out to be. In Chicago they are pretty much the same in round and map wins, but here device did make up for dupreeh's advantage from the group stage, especially because dupreeh had a few poor maps that Astralis won (Inferno vs. fnatic & Nuke vs. mousesports), which people never really consider, but that certainly detracts from a players "value" to the team, if they win when he's actually playing badly. device stayed consistent and contributed positively in literally every map Astralis won in Chicago. Same as Xyp9x actually, which is why I think if anyone wants to make a case against device here, Xyp9x is the one you should be making a case for, not dupreeh. But it went to device because of his overall consistency and more impact in the rounds and maps Astralis won compared to Xyp9x. I know people like to look for inconsistencies or come up with conspiracy theories, but there's actually a complex system behind how we select the MVPs, which Striker explained in an episode of HLTV Confirmed.

Because when you look back at a tournament or even a series and you look for the most valuable player, the map the team lost in a winning series made no difference on the outcome. Only thing that map serves in terms of performance is for someone's consistency, and while ofc it's better to be more consistent, it's more important to have impact during winning than during losing.

A losing map in a won series is different than a losing map in a lost series. That should be obvious. But in case it isn't, look at this theoretical example: 2-1 series. Player1 has 15:15 score, 0.95 rating in map 1 that his team won, then has 35:20 and a 1.7 rating in a map lost, and then again 15:15, 0.95 in map 3 that his team won. His teammate, Player2 goes for 25:10, 1.6 rating in map 1, 15:25 and 0.6 rating in map 2 and 25:15, 1.5 rating in map 3. At the end of the series they have the same K-D, rating etc (or you can use any performance criteria instead of K-D, rating, whatever you prefer). But which player was more valuable in cases like that? I think the answer is pretty clear, and it shows you why performances in some maps are more valuable than in others. The example isn't even that extreme, it actually happens often in similar ways.

As I said in my original reply, players do get punished for playing badly when the team wins, so Player2 will be "punished" for the 15-25 in map 3. The lost map really makes very little difference, Player1 contributed nothing except his own consistency in that map 2, while Player2's underperformance cost them nothing in the end except his own inconsistency (this is outcome based grading, looking back at things that happened, not looking for future value). So in the end it will come down to who did more in the map wins and in your example it will likely be Player1 as he was at least good in both of them, while Player2 was great and then bad. Whatever you think about maps being "easy", someone still has to perform well in them and they should be rewarded for it. A 16-0 just means more people get rewarded, not that someone skyrockets into top1 for the rest of the tournament. Their rating may look high, but they also do it in fewer rounds so it evens out in the end when tougher and longer maps come around.

In that case, yea Player2 is clearly more valuable, I don't see how you can argue that. Player1 was more consistent but certainly didn't make more impact on the series outcome. I repeat, this is outcome based grading - which I really don't think many people understand. Everyone tries to look for future value, and in that case sure you can call something an overperformance and you can be worried about Player2's bad performance on map 2 as it can mean the player is prone to being inconsistent. But in an outcome based system (look at the result first and then figure out how it happened and who contributed in what ways), there is far less value in that second map, for either team. That's just the Bo3/5 system for you. If all of CS was Bo1, it would be a different story.

Fair enough about Chicago, would still disagree about Major though. Discounting game vs Vega, device and dupreeh were level during group stage. Going to playoffs, in majority of the maps dupreeh was ahead in impact, kast and rating by decent margin, which is quite impressive considering that at the end both had even amount of kills as well as dupreeh had better entry stats. In that context it seems like some players ratings and impact are being overrated by surviving rate, playstyle and role specifics, when making comparison with aggressive players. All comes to conclusion by simply watching astralis play and it doesnt look like dupreeh take all anti-eco kills neither, not to mention that most of those rounds are half buys and easy multi kill wipes are actually not that common.

Well, I can't change how it "seems" like to you, I can only add that I literally sat down and noted down impact for every player in every round(!) of the Major (including the playoffs when I was in London) exactly for the purpose of properly grading each map and not over or underrating someone in the MVP race. An example I can give you is the Liquid semi-final on Mirage, where dupreeh ended up with better stats but device was certainly more impactful due to the 1st half where the game was already decided, and due to dupreeh getting anti-eco kills. And I have to notice you ignored the part where device was more impactful in the rounds Astralis won while talking about their impact. It was not just because device survived more. And I'm perfectly fine if people who didn't do what I did, and don't really have access to all the stats we have, can't really come to the same conclusion, but that's the nature of the job. In the end, the conclusion I had was that device's impact in the playoffs was underrated by his stats, while dupreeh's was overrated (neither by much, but enough for dupreeh to not be able to catch up -- and all that with playoff series being more imporant and having more maps than the group stage).

Even if I love device, this MVP and the major MVP where not deserved (dupreeh should have gotten major MVP and Xyp9x IEM Chicago). MVP formula is dead. How you can take TOTAL number of kills if players played different number of maps! You have to take average per map. In your formula those who played 2-1, 2-1, 2-1 will always be better, then those who won 2-0, 2-0, 2-0, just because they played more maps. LOL
