GeT_RiGhT: "I want everyone to know that even if they aren't talented, they can work hard and achieve good results"

In an lengthy interview with Aleksei "OverDrive" Birukov, Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund
touched on subjects ranging from the impact of age, money, and success on motivation, to his favorite teammates and coaches.

Two-time best player of the year, in 2013 and 2014, Major winner, and member of Ninjas in Pyjamas from the start of CS:GO, GeT_RiGhT, sat down with Russian personality OverDrive to discuss his legacy, as well as miscallenous topics, for an interview published on VPesports.

GeT_RiGhT wants to continue building his legacy as the "hardest working pro"

The 28-year-old Swede talked about movies and books, the origin of his nickname, how much his salary changed since he started playing, how that affects him, and what he plans to do when he retires. You can find some outtakes from the interview below:

Until what age is it possible to play on a high level?

[...]I don't think age matters. What really matters is your motivation.

I saw a lot of people be really great in this game, but they start having a lot of different things going in their lives. Starting families and finding more enjoyable things to do, to name two. So the age thing is not a question. If everything is good in your life, if your girlfriend and people around you accept your CSGO interest, then you can fully focus on playing CS. If they are not, you will have problems being on a high gaming level. It's a tricky question for these players because they need to choose what they want to do more. I'm lucky enough to have a girlfriend, friends, and family who fully accept my job.

When were you in your best form as a player?

I think it was between the ages of 20-25. I wasn't born talented, it was always really hard work. I played a little bit more than other pro players. That was my edge.

Having won a Major, how do you keep your drive and motivation alive to compete afterward?

Well, I need to remember that feeling, it has been a while. Anyway, my motivation never went down. To be on top you need to work as hard as you can. As I said, I always played a lot to become better. I couldn't just stop playing because I won something. My motivation never sinks. I always want to get back to the game and play it more because I always want to win. I always want to be the best. I already built my legacy, but I want to make it bigger, I want everyone to know that GeT_RiGhT is the hardest working pro and that even if they aren't talented, they can work hard and achieve good results.

Look at s1mple. A few years ago he was good, but nothing special. When he put hard work together with his talent, he became literally the best player in the world along with coldzera, device, etc. Every night I see him play. Most players go to sleep after practice and he goes to play some FPL mixes. I feel very motivated watching players like him.

Why you are still very nervous during the game?

Nerves are my strength and my weakness. I prefer being nervous. When I'm not nervous I play worse.

Read the interview in full on VPesports, where GeT_RiGhT also touches on his fear of flying, the dream of becoming a chef, and more.

I mean, he'll be disappointed after a loss, just like everyone else. You could argue that he's disciplined enough not to throw a hissy-fit after a loss, hence, why he would accept a loss and move on.

I met him after the loss on Dreamhack stockholm and i don't think it is at all like you are saying. He is just trying to stay focused like you can't stop crying everytime you lose when you have gone through as many losses before as him. Sure, if it is a major, you are going to be sad and maybe cry. But what we are looking like is a player who has been in the scene for like 10 years? don't you think he has played and lost alot of matches, and by alot i mean ALOT of matches.

he started to suck right after fifflaren left because his dota2 hours were 100h and cs nonexistent. So he says the truth about hardwork but his own lack of hardwork to stay at top is what fced him over

bad excuse He lacks self discipline, he has probably never exercised in his life, he used to have very bad diet but that might be better now since he idk. He was able to play dota2 and pubg a lot so I really dont see your point. To me he is more of an addiction-player than professional athlete especially when compared to people like fatal1ty or some korean wc3/sc2 stars who even train their finger muscles in ricebags just to get a small apm advantage

Not enough. Top players spent 10-15 hrs a day. You must have a bit of brain, practice the right stuff and with the right people. It's not just the aim

2 hrs a day is nothing mate. When I started playing I was doing about 6-7 hrs a day after work. Within months I was global. Now I play every now and again. I am dmg I think. 14 hrs a week is not enough. You have players who spend more than 60-70 hrs a week. They play a lot more

Dude 2 hours aim training is nothing compared to players who actually try to improve. I practice hours a day til my wrists hurt. 2 hours is just not enough on AIM to improve significantly.

Betwey made a video asking the pros how much time they spend training a day. Most of them said they kill 500 - 1000 bots. Which is done in 15 mins. And you tell me 2hrs is not enough?

Thats pros. If a MM player is trying to improve you need to put in more hours than a pro. Pros can still improve their aim, but there isnt too much to improve when pros like GetRight have kinda already reached their peak/potential.

aim_btz aim doesnt translate into aim in 5vs5. this is something that comes with time. takes +5 hours daily over years. its not that you can be sunny in 2 months just by doing aim_botz. there is more about aiming than just "raw aim" even if you dont see it.

I'm not saying you must not be talented. Of course you can. Otherwise, only people with like 200 hrs in 2 weeks should be on top. Which is false. But you need practice too

I have to disagree in that, of course talent is important but practice and your life state matters too. Nowadays I play Cs for 6 hours a week maybe even less and I can assure you that if I didn't practice I would play worse. Also there are days that I can go fragging everywhere and days that it feels uncomfortable to even pick my mouse.

100% incorrect. If you are not improving, you are playing with the wrong players, and you need to find players better than you to learn from and play with. If your social skills are not good enough to get yourself in that position, you are working on the wrong thing. Stop working on your aim and start working on your networking skills? Meet some better players who you can learn some things from. As a washed up nothing/nobody who had enough talent to go far but not in a situation to put the time in I will attest to the single greatest factor in getting good is not practice. Its WHO you practice with.

Ok first, 2 hours of aim training is not really that much. Look at Zellsis. He dms for 6 hours a day before joining pugs, 10 mans or matches. It really depends on what is best for you. The game is more than just aim_botz and aim training. Try playing small leagues with a team. If anything, you will improve very wuickly by doing that rather thsn just pugging all day or playing aim botz.

You dont have limits in anything. You just beed to change your style a little bit. Maybe you notice you are a B site player, but you seem to be failing at defense more frequently. Find new strategies to win. Maybe try A site, or a different play style. From more passive to more agressive, etc. Learn the opponents play style after 1 or more matches. Adapt to that and just practice your ass off. Give yourself a challenge too. MM and faceit premium is not enough. Try mythic on faceit, etc, challenge yourself. Learn from others, you learn more when you lose. Hard work always will pay off even if it isnt he way you expected.

Well my routine when i used to play at high lvl during .6 (top 3fr) was 1.5hours DM everyday + 4-5 hours of training with team(pracc+strats) or pugs on days off. And i assure you if at the time there was all the opportunies you have today i would never have stopped. You obviously won't become a pro doing that for two months and that only trains your muscle memory nothing else, so only doing that is not enough. i played from 2001 to 2006 to reach the level to go compete @top.fr stopped in 2008 and played 2 eswc's and it would have taken me a couple more years to go further. He never said it was easy, he said it was possible. + if you don't get any fun out of doing that, just quit trying to become any good.

You probably can't be a top anything without aptitude of some sort, but the most important component to getting there is the work you put in. Like, yes it's fair to say the best Mathematicians are born with a certain mind that many people won't have, but they'd likely never grow without studying and concepting their craft. I have a wide aptitude for rendering, and can say I'm better than the large majority of the population. But I also had to practice to improve, no matter how much more talent I had than other people.

Well cool off a bit and reconnect with your brain mate. He obviously said that even not talented person can practice a lot and "achieve good results". Being in top10, even if he is the worst of all top10 players is still an amazing achievement after all these years he is playing. Even being in top30 of all the players on the planet in such a competetive game as CS, is a great achievement. So no, I will not clean your toilet and to be perfectly honest I don't feel like I even want to talk to you anymore, since you are either a kid or a braindead grown up with low sens of what logic is.

I don't agree. Yes he has fallen off his glory days but imagine how far he might have fell if he didn't work so hard. The hard work might be the only thing that is keeping him in a top team.

In his defence, he's been really ill, but has trying to manage it. You can see he's motivated and passionate about the game still because he's playing any ole he can to make the team better. props to GTR!

This is why I love GeT_RiGhT and why he is one of my favorite players. Words and interviews like these are motivational and they got me interested in the game. It's crazy to look back on this year as a whole and see how much the scene has changed and how much GeT_RiGhT has as well, from having the worst tournament of his entire career in ESL One Cologne 2018 to having multiple stand-out performances and seemingly exiting the slump afterwards. It shows that even if you're in a horrible place you can recover with work, and that's always been GeT_RiGhT's motto even since the older days and his glory days. To be smarter and use the game better than anyone else could, He was what defined playing as a lurker and defined many other things as well in his time. True Legends will always have my respect, so respect for GeT_RiGhT
