Aerial: "I had like 160 hours in two weeks [...] I really wanted to win this tournament and get the MVP"

We interviewed BLAST Pro Series Madrid MVP Jani "Aerial" Jussila after his team beat Astralis 2-0 in the grand final to be crowned champions.

ENCE won BLAST Pro Series Madrid after taking down the world's #1 team, Astralis, ending their 31-map streak on Nuke along the way. After the match, we caught up with first time MVP awardee Aerial to get his post-match impressions.

Aerial believes the team can contest the top spot in the rankings

In the interview, we talked to Aerial about ENCE exceeding their expectations in Madrid, his practice before the event and individual performances, breaking Astralis' streak on Nuke, and what the team has its sights on after the victory in Madrid.

Before the event, I talked to Aleksib and he said it was important to beat Na`Vi to make progress by winning against a good team like that. You eventually beat Astralis in the BO3 final, so you exceeded your expectations...

Yeah, we definitely exceeded our expectations. I had a feeling we'd do pretty great, and I had a feeling we would make it to the final, but I wasn't sure if we would be able to beat Astralis. It happened, though, everyone just hit their shots and at one point we were so hyped, the communication was spot on, and everything went great.

You say you had a great feeling coming into the event, why was that?

It's been over a month since we were in a LAN environment, and everyone was just so hyped to come here and play. We just played some online things, we took a small vacation and didn't have any practice, and when we came back we had so much motivation to come here... We all like it here, everything is great.

You played the whole event really well, what is it that made you be so comfortable? Did you change anything in your game?

I'm a bit inconsistent, normally. Sometimes I can be the best player on our team, but I can also be the worst player on our team. This tournament I played every game, except one, really well, and I had a lot of hours put in before the event. I had like 160 hours in two weeks before this event, I really tried everything. I pretty much just slept and played all day. I really wanted to win this tournament and get the MVP, as well.

You played really well throughout the whole event, but you also did in the final. Did you have any nerves before the grand final?

We had a tough match against Giants and I didn't feel that good during that match. Then I went into aim_botz before the final and I felt really good before it started and I got my confidence back. I knew I could have a great game if I just kept focusing without getting frustrated and had a good mindset during the match.

You broke Astralis' streak on Nuke as they were about to make history. Did you prepare anything special to take them on?

Our coach, Twista, he looked at some stuff, but we knew that they're just good at reacting to different situations, like XvsX situations, but we were prepared. We know how they like to adapt to situations and how they want to react, so we kind of adapted to that and it worked. Our coach said some time ago that when we face Astralis on Nuke we'd be the ones to beat them, and that's what we did.

To close it out, looking at the future, what do you think the limit is for this team?

After beating Astralis the top 1 spot is pretty possible for us if we keep playing the same way we played here.

I work 50-60 hours a week sometimes and earn a fuck load less than this dude does, and he's younger than me and no doubt enjoys his job more too. When you're a grown up and not living off your parents you might have a bit more respect for the effort.

Indeed but he's done 80 hours for these 2 weeks only, and probably overstated it to be dramatic. And it's paid off, really well. Many people work 80 hour weeks in hard manual jobs, for crap money and get sod all enjoyment from it. And they have to do it for years solidly just to pay the bills. So again, he's living there dream imo. Most guys his age would be lucky to earn a fraction of the money they get and won't be travelling the world and playing to adoring crowds with your mates whilst doing so. But it's easy to slate them from behind a computer screen in a dark bedroom in your parents house.

Sure. He didn't play at all in last 2 weeks, he just got new aimhack and rekted Astralis! For real probably his Steam says 160 hours but it counts all hours that CS is on so it's anyway a bit misleading but most likely this is da case.

hard work pays off, more players should play 80hours a week DM, dont see why they wouldnt unless they want to bang their IG model GF and start a family at the age of 20 like electronic .... Unlucky and shame his first MVP is an irrelevant event but i'm sure if he keeps playing like this he will get one for a more prestigious event gj.

160hs in 2 weeks out of the 336 hs two weeks have. If we consider he slept 8 recommended hours a day then we have like 64 hours of the two weeks of free time for like -Eating -Showers -Going out -Taking a shit If he did actually play 160hs of cs I hope he gets a fucking vacation or something, that's no way of living lmao.

There's 336 hours in 14 days. That means if he got a normal 8 hours of sleep he spent another 12 just playing CS:GO. I'm not saying it's impossible he had that many, but it's insane to do that. Take a break. Go outside. Do anything else.

There's a difference between trying your best, and trying too hard. I think anything over 100 in 2 weeks is over doing it. At that point you're putting so much time in a day into just CS that your brain no longer focuses anymore. You ever work a shift longer than 8 hours before? It's similar in the sense that after too long the brain is tired of repeating the same action and therefore kills productivity.

I am not sure that is the same, since for me actually playing gives so much fun and it enjoys me. So the game and approach to it boost possible maximum session duration.

The difference is playing CS isn't your job. Hypothetically speaking let's say you had a job as a chef and you went two weeks straight of working 10-12 hour shifts, when you get home the idea of cooking yourself food is horrible.

Cooking doesn't actually gives you that huge result that can give CS:GO. You literally can enjoy every second spending in-game because you want and you are improving there. It's like a reading book, but you don't get tired. And also Aerial looks good physically, so that means he does exercise himself to be in better shape. And his game hours also could be AFK but that is still impressive, because everyone has AFK hours.

You've got a good point there but, first, i think everyone has their own limits of how long they can stay productive and focused. You can also train these things Second, im pretty sure that those 10 hours a day included a lot of small breaks here and there. And after all, does aim training always require productivity or even that much focus when its mostly about muscle memory?

I'm going to say this again and again as long as people keep talking about astralis being bad cause they lost to this team or took this tourney off are fucking stupid and don't understand how sports are. Do you see the warriors stomping out every opponent every game? No, because they realize the season is 82 games and long. so it's better to preserve yourself for the big tourneys. My point is you can't expect them to beat every team 24/7 on every map yes they'll be the favourites but it's not guaranteed. Do you know how hard it is to maintain such consistency and level?
