Intel Grand Slam Season 3 announced with updated rules

ESL has announced that the Intel Grand Slam (IGS) is receiving a third season, which will feature a stricter set of rules.

Teams will still claim the $1 million prize if they win four IGS-eligible tournaments hosted by ESL and DreamHack inside a span of ten events as long as at least one of those trophies came at a designated Masters level competition (for 2020 these tournaments will be IEM Katowice, ESL One Cologne and any potential Major run by either company). Otherwise, teams will require six tournament victories during a window of ten events to collect the cheque.

The changes come after a season which lasted just 144 days after Liquid won four events in a row, breaking Astralis' record from season one by 379 days.

Liquid won the Intel Grand Slam Season 2 at ESL One Cologne

If the new set of rules had been in place since the beginning, Astralis would have had to wait for their IEM Katowice Major victory to claim their $1 million cheque. Liquid, on the other hand, would have still won the prize when they did, at ESL One Cologne.

The third Intel Grand Slam season will kick off on Thursday at IEM Chicago, where Liquid will be looking to extend their hot streak and win their sixth Big Event trophy in a row. Three more IGS events have already been announced for 2019, none of which of a designated Masters level, and a potential fourth one, IEM Beijing, was teased by ESL in a recent promotional video.

The event schedule for the third Intel Grand Slam season currently looks as follows:

United States IEM Chicago - July 18-21
United States ESL One New York - September 26-29
Sweden DreamHack Masters Malmö - October 1-6
China IEM Beijing - November (still unconfirmed)
Denmark ESL Pro League Season 10 Finals - December 3-8

Interesting. Good changes imo. RIP Liquid fluke is over now

6 out of 10, or 4 out of 10 if one of those 4 is either a major, IEM Katowice, or ESL One Cologne. Unfortunately, I dont think the Starladder Major is included in this grand slam scheme because it's run by starladder, not an intel sponsored series.

IEM Chicago is honestly full of trash teams. Vitality have no chance to beat liquid and ENCE .. well they succ lately (after the major fluke and then 1 or 2 more decent events). SHOULD NOT COUNT at all... its like Astralis / NaVI playing Good Game League

Vitality can beat ence ez, how can you say all their tournements have just been flukes, thats impossible, your telling me that cs_summit was a fluke? ecs was a fluke? cologne final was a fluke? Thats alot of flukes bro, you're just saying that because they threw at esea, TL and ence are not shit, G2 aren't favorites winning agaisnt TL, ence or vitality but they will still put up a good fight, ive got to agree the rest of the teams aren't that great, but this will still be a really decent tournement to watch i geuss you're just salty because astralis isn't playing

Intel (A failing semiconductor company that makes overpriced CPUs with security flaws) is struggling with their 10 nm fab and is being decimated by AMD. $1m is probably too much for them to pay out right now but still want to stay relevant so they change the rules. AMD Grand Slam soon #Ryzen

Yeah I know, but I feel like IGS is like a competition over the year which should be claimed by the best team. And if (for example) Team A wins Cologne and 3 other Events and Team B wins 5 (none Master Level) Events by esl and 2 Majors that are not held by esl, Team A still claims the prize if you know what I mean.
2019-07-16 18:12

Well first of all a major wont count unless its ESL hosted Second winning 5 tournaments + a major is usually going to be more impressive than a team winning 3 events + cologne. So I really dont see the issue in your example. The team with more success gets the reward.

"Team A wins Cologne and 3 other Events and Team B wins 5 (none Master Level) Events by esl and 2 Majors that are not held by esl" Team A wins the IGS because they need only 4 tournaments for it since they win Cologne, meanwhile Team B doesn't because they don't win a master level tournament but 5 of the small ones (they need 6 to win the IGS). Team B also wins 2/2 Majors in a year, but none of them is by ESL/Dreamhack, so people would say Team B had the more impressive performance over the year, but Team A still claims the grand slam.

Imo should just be 5 wins without designated masters win. Granted, whoever wins the next season will likely win one of the designated masters, winning 6 out of 10 other ones seems a bit outrageous. I know this is supposed to be incredibly difficult to win, but season 1 took forever for even 4 wins, and season 2 just lined up schedule wise for liquid to have so many in a row during their rise to the peak. I can see someone winning if they do get a designated win, but I really can't see someone win by getting 6 out of 10 non designated wins. Just my guess though

Either winning four tournaments but one has to be the major or cologne. Or winning 6 out of 10 tourneys

Should be 5 without the designated tournament/major. I like the change for Kato and Cologne though.
