vice to take indefinite break from competition

Former Cloud9 played Daniel "vice" Kim has announced he will be taking a break from competition to further his education.

vice made his first splash competitively when he signed for TSM in early 2016 following a stint in Denial. There, he played with Kory "SEMPHIS" Friesen, Pujan "FNS" Mehta, Hunter "SicK" Mims, and Liquid superstar Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken.

vice will take a break from competition

vice also shared a team with Ethan "Ethan" Arnold when they both were under the eUnited banner. He then went on to sign by Rogue, where he had his longest tenure and played with the likes of Spencer "Hiko" Martin, Mathias "MSL" Lauridsen, Ricardo "Rickeh" Mulholland, and Casper "cadiaN" Møller before getting his big break with Cloud9. The Cloud9 transfer didn't work out, however, as the team was overhauled soon after as bad results had been dragging on before and after his joining the organization.

The American player has now stated that he will return to school and go on hiatus from competition as he has lost motivation, but has left the opportunity for a return in the future open.

vice's statement reads:

"As of now and the foreseeable future, I am taking an extended break from competitive CS. Somewhere along the way, I lost the inspiration and motivation that made me want to devote 100% of myself to the game and I don't think staying in the pro scene for the sake of money is the right way for me. I'm planning on going back to school for now but CS has been such a big part of my life that I doubt I'll be done with it forever.

"Shoutout to all my friends that made this journey unforgettable"

people get their bachelor's degree here between 22-23 years old mostly so he is probably going for his masters. Or he also started college later you never know, there is no age that you need to be under to go to school you know.

Well Karrigan has a masters degree in something so he will be able to find something after cs if he does not become a big streamer or affiliate for one of the many different companies involved in esports.

You're absolutely right in your decision. Few players perform well enough in order to make that a decent job. Studying is the way to go, don't waste your life in this game if you're not an exceptional player (as we see so many do)

Good for him. Pro CS will be a nice memory. He can tell his kids he was on C9 with Flusha and Autimatic one day. I'm sure he's got some cash. Won't have to stress too much while he finishes school. Go get a good job. Decent player but at 23 doesn't have the chops to make it in the bigs so to speak.

Almost definitely talking about college. It's kind of hard to drop out of high school and this guy was nowhere on the radar when he would have done it. I mean he's older then Elige, NAF, Twistzz, Stewie2k, Brehze, Ethan and Autimatic. That's all NA's great players and unlike Sick for example I don't remember this guys name before TSM at all.

The best part is: "I don't think staying in the pro scene for the sake of money is the right way for me." What money? Being unsigned? Did this guy even stream? Lol. Talking like JW would if he were walking away from $25,000/month salary with Fnatic + backends, lol. Why did this even get an article, tbh? Kid made an average of $7,000/yr in prize money for every year active to a collective less than $35,000. Okay, then...

Lol CS players signed by organizations make money, it's called a salary fyi. Most orgs don't even give players prize money anymore, they just pay them salary and maybe a bonus if they win a big tournament (plus sticker money if applicable) I'm not saying he was making liquid style money obviously, but just being signed by c9 means he was getting paid.

Vice: 2019-03-23 - 2019-07-02 // Cloud 9 (Trial) 2019-09-02 // Announces inactivity. You clearly don't pay attention. He hasn't been signed the entire summer. He was dropped 2 months ago by C9 and has not been collecting salary since (ie. No money). In addition to that, esports orgs make 99% of their money from advertisement revenue and investors. Not prize money. Prize money collection was a thing of the past. Established orgs don't collect on the prize money... They make millions off advertisements and back-end deals. Players likely collect a salary (obviously), stream revenue, and the prize money (if not the majority), as most of their income. Whereas the bigger bucks from advertisement and endorsement revenue go to the org itself. If you remember the Tfue scenario with FaZe Clan, they didn't collect on his prize money... They make MILLIONS off having top talent. The prize money is nil to the orgs in comparison to what they get paid by peripheral and energy drink companies to represent them. That's how the trade off works. Prize money is collected by players (again, for top tier teams, guaranteed, because the orgs have other fluid streams of revenue, as well as it helps to motivate players to win when they get to keep their earnings. Meanwhile, the orgs benefit from having Marvel and Razor emblazoned on their players' jerseys or in the player's screen name, in game. That's where the REAL money comes from in esports and always has. This isn't 2009 anymore. Prize money used to BE collected by orgs to help pay for players salaries/expenditures. You have it backwards on when Prize money was actually given to players. It is now, not prior. This doesn't necessarily hold true for Tier 3-4 teams, but Tier 1 teams make all their $ off their clout and from their investors/advertisers. But, I digress... vice wasn't making any money playing CS anymore and thus, goes back to school like any other kid. In that, the entire time he spent on a Tier 1/2 org was in Rogue (2017-19) and C9 (2019). He had two years were he actually collected what you could consider a moderately decent salary - if that. C9 pays well, but he was only trialing - so there's no way to know how much he was making as he wasn't a full-fledged member of the org, yet. Like a trainee, basically. I'm sure the salary was still very nice... For what it was. And since, two months of unemployment.
