Evil Geniuses tie Liquid in Intel Grand Slam S3 race with New York success

Evil Geniuses and Liquid are joint leaders in the race for the $1 million prize from Intel Grand Slam (IGS) Season 3 following the former's title-winning campaign at ESL One New York.

The ex-NRG team reached a new milestone on Sunday as they picked up their first-ever Intel Grand Slam title after defeating Astralis in the best-of-five grand final of ESL One New York - the second IGS event of the season after IEM Chicago.

In winning the event in the Big Apple, Evil Geniuses became the first team other than Astralis or Liquid to claim an Intel Grand Slam title since MOUZ came out on top of ESL One New York 2018, precisely 12 months ago.

The Intel Grand Slam Season 3 will continue next week with DreamHack Masters Malmö, where Liquid and Evil Geniuses will have the opportunity to get ahead in the race for the $1 million prize.

ESL changed the rules for Season 3 to increase the difficulty of the challenge after Liquid won Season 2 inside 63 days. A team can still claim the $1 million prize if they win four IGS-eligible tournaments inside a span of ten events as long as at least one of those trophies came at a Masters level competition (for 2020 these tournaments will be IEM Katowice, ESL One Cologne and any potential Major run by either ESL or DreamHack). Otherwise, teams will require six tournament victories during a window of ten events to collect the cheque.

Below you can find a list with the Season 3 events that are already behind us and the ones that have already been confirmed:

IEM Chicago - United States Liquid
ESL One New York - United States Evil Geniuses
DreamHack Masters Malmö - October 1-6
IEM Beijing - November 7-10
ESL Pro League Season 10 Finals - December 3-8
IEM Katowice 2020 - February 25-March 1
ESL One Cologne 2020 - July 6-12

They got it on home soil. Analysts casters crowd everyone was against Astralis that whole tournament. Pretty sure it'll be different on denmark

Against Astralis? Of course, the home team always has the crowd advantage but that's all secondary. EG simply played better CS and were phenomenal. Could have been a clean 3-0 sweep.

then it will be good if major is held by other organizer outside of esl and dreamhack, so we can have more tournament that way. even though it such a waste because esl and dreamhack major production always superb

Players can barely handle their schedules as they are right now. Adding more tournaments will just create a shit pro scene. Blast has already proved that.

Yes, very much looking forward to Malmö. I want to see if EG can continue their success and if Astralis will grow out of their premier slump. They always fall at premier/minor tournaments. Majors is their playground. Saying Evil Geniuses is still so surreal, and they won their first tournament couple days after signing. It's crazy.

The rule changes are interesting. It's definitely less likely that someone will win it now. Not sure they were entirely necessary though, yes Liquid dominated for a few months there but that doesn't happen often, especially at a time that makes winning the Grand Slam possible.
