freddieb announces retirement

Fredrik "freddieb" Buö has announced he will take a step back from Counter-Strike to pursue higher education.

freddieb appeared on the scene in 2016, when he and Joakim "disco doplan" Gidetun were added to CG immediately after the first Europe Minor. The team was then picked up by Epsilon, and freddieb was part of the rosters that went on to win two events in China that year, Pro Gamer League Summer 2016 and the WCA 2016 Finals.

When his time in Epsilon ended, freddieb was signed by GODSENT, with whom he qualified for the WESG 2017 World Finals and won the QI Invitational in Serbia. He then moved on to Red Reserve and Ancient, reaching the DreamHack Open Summer 2019 grand final with the latter.

freddieb puts an end to his career four years after joining Epsilon

freddieb then joined GamerLegion's Swedish roster in November. That same month they played the WePlay! Forge of Masters Season 2 Finals, which they ended in 3-4th place, freddieb's last LAN before the team disbanded in March.

The 26-year-old has now announced that he will no longer pursue a career in Counter-Strike, instead choosing to focus on attending university, which he will start to do in two weeks. "I'm so glad and thankful to have met so many awesome persons, played for some cool orgs and been able to travel around the world playing and winning some nice events!" freddieb said in his farewell tweet, "I didn’t get to that Major I was aiming for, so hopefully I can get it in Computer Science instead," the tweet concluded.

pretty much every European university student I've met was between 24-29 outside of some french ppl. A lot of Germans and swiss people I met opted to go to trade school before college, because jobs requiring trade school are more common than in the states. A lot of Scandinavians I met rly took advantage of the fact that the state and their parents wouldn't let them go homeless and die if they were unemployed and traveling for a year or two after high school.

Funny you say that people Scandinavians take advantage of it like it's such a bad thing to do. Burnout is a real thing and going to work for a year to learn how the real world is and what heavy labor is, is meaningful. If anything that is a lesson that motivates people when they go back to university to take it serious so that they don't have to end up with that kind of work in the future.

That's very very very uncommon in Belgium or Greece. Actually, if you already made studies before, the uni doesn't receive found for you so they might refuse you directly.

Sad to hear that, it does not sound very supporting for higher educations. In Austria you get a full scholarship (€870/month) if you have worked 4 years full time before studying. There are some reglementations to it (start BSc before 30, MSc before 35, cant change major twice, etc.) but its a great finanical support package.

In Belgium, if you fail one year of a master degree, you can't have money from state till you found your first job and keep it for at least one year and an half. If you worked before studying, you lose this money cuz you need to apply for job to deserve the money (one exception, if you take course in a field where we lack workers). So leaving work for study is a huge sacrifice cuz you won't have money and have trouble afterward if you don't get a job quickly. As you said, pretty sad but the government is making it harder every year for 10yo.

Jesus frickin christ!!! What's wrong with yall? Typing sad, who, valorant, comments in here. Did you read the beautiful article? Do you even care? freddieb had a pretty cool cs life, let's be honest. He played computer games for a living, got to travel all over this cool planet earth AND had fun with his friends while he was doing it. Pretty f*ckin cool if you ask me. And now he looks further in life and made a mature decision to attend university. And did you even noticed how cool he finished his final statement on Twitter? "Obviously I didn’t get to that major I was aiming for, so hopefully I can get it in Computer Science instead ;) CS is still in his heart!
