Hard Legion remove zoneR following ban for coaching bug exploit

After an internal investigation into Aleksandr "⁠zoneR⁠" Bogatiryev's two-year ban by ESL, Hard Legion has decided to cut ties with their coach effective immediately.

"It was difficult for us to believe in Alexander's guilt,", Hard Legion said in their statement about the matter, but based on the results of internal discussions, the decision was made that the punishment was fair and that no appeal would be made. zoneR was banned by ESL for two years due to abusing the coaching bug exploit in six maps across three matches in ESL One: Road to Rio - CIS.

Hard Legion cut ties with their coach and have found the players innocent

Hard Legion added that they condemn any manifestation of cheating, with their concern beign that the players were aware of zoneR's usage of the exploit. However, that was not confirmed and they "tend to believe that the coach did not inform anyone about the fact he has an advantage in the game".

According to Hard Legion, the players continued to play fair, "ignoring the fact that the coach's hints turned out to be extremely correct". No sanctions from the side of the team will be applied to the Semyon "⁠kinqie⁠" Lisitsyn and co. as "we have no reason to believe that the players were aware of this 'bug' in advance", the statement reads.

With zoneR being dismissed from the team for his transgressions, he Hard Legion the team for the second time in two months, having departed at the end of June before returning two weeks ago, in August.

Following the announcement, freelance esports referee Michal Slowinski — who was one of the key people in uncovering the bug abuse—, added that Hard Legion's assistant coach Erik "⁠AKIMOV⁠" Akimov was also caught abusing the bug. The infraction happened in Eden Arena: Malta Vibes Cup 3, a tournament that took place on July 14-19 where Hard Legion placed 3-4th. Slowinski also added that "it is very surprising that they [players] didn't realise something was wrong, considering this was abused at least 10 full maps".

Yesterday we received a letter from ESL announcing the decision to ban our coach for two years. It was difficult for us to believe in Alexander's guilt, but we had to conduct a personal investigation of this situation. Based on the results of internal discussions, we decided that the punishment from ESL was fair. We refuse to make any appeal and we are staying on the side of the tournament organizer.

The Hard Legion organization is extremely negative about any manifestation of "cheating" and believes that honesty in Esports should be above all other things!We are very concerned that our players are suspected of knowingly conspiring with the coach and are also secretly urged to punish them. In the course of the proceedings with the coach and the players, we tend to believe that the coach did not inform anyone about the fact that he has an advantage in the game. The players continued to play fair, ignoring the fact that the coach's hints turned out to be extremely correct. We have no reason to believe that the players were aware of this "bug" in advance, so no sanctions on our part will be applied to the players.

We made a decision to not to take the side of the coach and not look for excuses for his action. Alexander "MechanoGun" Bogatyrev was immediately dismissed from his post as team coach.

We bring our deepest apologies to all competitors, as well as all the Esports fans. We believe that this story will be indicative for everyone.

I agree, this must be punished. The only thing I disagree with is the lack of consistency in the punishment handed out to players or teams, that has abused bugs in the past. Pixel walking, the jump bug on inferno, fnatic abusing a map bug on overpass. Take the fnatic case, they did that in a quarter-final in a $250.000 tournament yet received no punishment or ban from other Dreamhack tournaments (or CSGO tournaments) for x months/years. If you find a hole in a map, the game engine, the config files used at a tournament, the tournament PCs or some other major oversight that can be exploited and you keep it to yourself and abuse it, then clearly you don't care about winning fair and square.

The only match were they were the only ones abusing it was vs C9 and that was a destruction of C9 - no matter if they used it or not ... vs faze and MIBR the bug was known, allowed by valve and prohibited to overuse via gentlemen’s agreement. While this coach bug is way more effective and exploited by just a hand full *also the crouch jump bug was widely used before big exploited it (Mirage Jump spotting b apps - everyone did that!)

HUNDEN's ban is 12 months and he is 4 years younger than zoneR. He could stay at Heroic in a analyst role and maybe come back to coaching in a year, with someone else taking on the role of Head Coach.

Do you think there is an age limit on coaching? It is not as reaction and vision based as playing... I mean football coacheds often times coach well into their seventies. Flick is 55, Klopp is 53, Mourinho is 58, Pep is 49. Ancelotti is 61 and Heyneckes was 72 when he left Bayern.

Yeah no, of course, but in CS it's very uncommon to see someone above the age of 35. It's not a hard age limit, as in it's not impossible to do it beyond that age, but most people just don't.

Yeah, like I said, there's no hard age limit as in you could theoretically do it when you are 70, but there are much better opportunities to earn a living once you get beyond the 30-35 age mark. Also, the game is always changing in meta, and the old meta that existed back in their time is no longer availible. Not everyone can adapt to that, Dignitas is a perfect example.

You have a fair point in saying that the meta is changing, but isn't that exactly the task of an IGL / Coach? To adapt their team to a current meta? I think Dignitas / NiP fell of because they got older and are no longer on their physical peek, but also because they never were a truly great team. They were just the best at the time because the others were shit and they were good, but they were never great. When other teams caught up with them you could see their constant stagnation. Imo NiP 2013/2014 would struggle to be a Top 10 team at this current day.

I do not think so. What I meant to say is that NiP were the first team to approach the CSGO scene from a professional standpoint. In the early years of CS a lot of players still had fulltime jobs. NiP's players didn´t. When other teams adapted, paid proper salaries and made their players able to make a living of the game, NiP just fell off not because the meta changed, but because they no longer had the advantage over other teams. Also XIzt is just a shit IGL, if he would have been kicked 5 years ago and replaced by someone like pronax, they might have been able to be salvaged, but now it is way too late,

Still, if you think about it ESL and DH have counted for about 80% of all the big tournaments we've played this year. In fact, the only tournaments they played that weren't ESL or DH were: -ICE Challenge -LOOT.BET Season 6 -Elisa Invitational -Home Sweet Home 5 & 6 -cs_summit 6 Qualifier and Main Event And the only ones of those that can be considered big events are cs_summit and ICE Challenge. Going forward, the only two events they are scheduled to play according to HLTV are EPL S12 and IEM New York, both ESL events. While more will probably be added, the only non-ESL event going forward is the BLAST Premier Fall Series, which consists of three events in Europe. And they very well could have used it during BLAST and can recieve a ban for that as well. In other words: The only event HUNDEN is potentially coaching this year is going to be BLAST, and even that is unconfirmed.

He could still give the info but he could be subtle. Example: Say he noticed the enemy team have a poor economy. He could call "I think they will have a rough buy, you should get SMGs and don't buy an AWP." That's info that could just as well have been a smart read, and does not indicate any cheating at all. Another example, they are stacking A on an eco round. A good coach would know when the enemy team are on an eco, and expecting a stack would be a smart move. He could call "let's go B, they might stack" knowing full well they are all A, but making it seem he just happened to get it right. See what I mean?
