TeamOne overrun New England Whalers to qualify for ESL Pro League Season 13

The Brazilian roster's one-map advantage proved beneficial as they made short work of the New England Whalers in the best-of-five MDL grand final to qualify for ESL Pro League Season 13.

TeamOne have emerged victorious from the North American division of ESEA MDL Season 35, besting Ben "ben1337" Smith's New England Whalers 3-0 in the grand final (1-0 default, 16-6 Dust2, 16-10 Mirage). The victory sees TeamOne book a direct ticket to ESL Pro League Season 13 after the qualification spots were reassigned to the winners of the North American and European divisions of MDL following the cancellation of ESEA Season 35 Global Challenge.

The two finalists were the clear frontrunners during the regular season, earning the top two seeds heading into the playoffs. Pedro "Maluk3" Campos's men came out on top of their initial meeting against the Whalers in the upper bracket final, edging out a win in two maps, with ben1337 and company earning redemption by easing past Secret Club in the consolidation final to setup a rematch against the Brazilians for the title.

TeamOne have secured a spot in ESL Pro League Season 13

TeamOne, who entered the grand final with a one-map advantage due to their undefeated run in the upper bracket, kicked off their own pick of Dust2 in solid form, making up for a pistol round loss with a successful force-buy to take control.

An eight-round spree helmed by a strong showing from Matheus "prt" Scuvero put the Brazilians well ahead before the Whalers were able to respond, but rounds were few and far between for ben1337's side as TeamOne posted an 11-4 lead at the break before closing out their pick in fast fashion to go up 2-0 in the series.

The New England Whalers looked similarly out of sorts on their Mirage pick, piecing together a small lead at the onset before TeamOne put up a stalwart defense to pull ahead 10-5 heading into the side swap. A brief back-and-forth force-buy war at the start of the second half was won by Maluk3's men, who only conceded three additional rounds before closing out the series with a 16-10 scoreline to qualify for ESL Pro League Season 13.

I believe there was a post mentioning how covid refuced the spots available. Don’t quote me though as it could have instead been about how certain regions lost their ESP spot for this season.

To be fair they REALLY care. I tried interviewing every N/A MDL team (50% replied) and this was mals answer to a follow up question on if it’s frustrating trying to practice in N/A current environment: “It is true, but we aren't focusing on staying in MDL and get a good record, we are looking to move forward and make it to EPL and to win top tier events.” They are putting in 6-7 hours a day as a team. They have a goal and accomplished their first part.

Then why are they so bad then if theyr actually trying? Go watch european pro matches demos and try to learn. Plain and simple. When i was watching triumph vs team one nuke, i just thought to myself, how on earth those guys doesnt know how to do yard smokes and go b. If supposedly the pro team, simply too lazy to learn basics, what can we expect from mdl randoms. I bet by “we are trying” he means - we are playing entire day for fun as any other gamer and we will see what happens

Being “good” at the worst level isnt really acomplishment. Look at t1/triump they are better than those mdl teams and yet they get completelly shit on by tier 1, when tier 1 is not even trying. Of whalers would try as hard as they tell they do, they should atleast be able to compete woth tier 2 teams, yet they get shit on by teamone

nt whalers on the scene since 2011 and got nothing relevant those guys teamone has been improving for long, hltv.org/matches/2344448/100-thieves-vs-.. they are starting confronting t1 teams again and not doing so badly triumph had his hardcarry (grim) removed, they made a couple steps back, few roaster changes and could be an EU competitor (wtf this doesnt exist)

If you’re referring to my post, yes. Mal is on teamONE and he is the one who partook in the small interview with me. I don’t think you should be comparing them to any sort of European team right now as they just finished climbing the hurting N/A ranks. That isn’t to take anything away from them but the competition they face both in matches and in practice does, in my opinion, hinder their performance just a bit.

Team One isn't bad. They've been trying to make a name for themselves in NA for quite some time now because they outgrew Brazil. While I'm a bit sad for New England Whalers, I'm sure that this will make them try even harder next season. I hope this "inspires" the other NA teams to actually try and do something if they really want to make it to the pro leagues for ESL and other events / leagues.

I hope you're not trying to make a racist joke because it's old, overused, and not funny. You're laughing, but you see that some Brazilian teams have moved overseas from Brazil to NA in hopes of competing with the best by reaching the top of the ladder in NA. Brazil has a number of promising teams who want to win more than a lot of NA teams, so when they start beating NA teams, NA fans shouldn't get upset.

honestly shows how bad NA is atm, any decent competition and t1 would have no chance, they make way too many mistakes and throw ecos like no tomorrow.. but they could be ok if they fixed those issues

They did what they had to do. They do not use the “no competition” as an excuse but it must make some parts of practicing a bit tough in terms of looking better.

TeamOne is looking insane atm., if they could play in Europe they would be TOP 15 team. And Whalers are showing a little bit of life left in them, with small changes they could be really good.
