Simon "⁠twist⁠" Eliasson has been moved from Ninjas in Pyjamas's active roster, the team announced on Tuesday, citing poor recent results as the motivation behind the change. Stepping into the lineup for the upcoming BLAST Premier Spring Groups will be Young Ninjas player Erik "⁠ztr⁠" Gustafsson.

Ninjas in Pyjamas is currently ranked 18th in the world, coming off a back of an underwhelming cs_summit 7 outing where they finished 5-8th. Performance issues have plagued the team for some time, as from the last 11 series played, the Swedes managed just three wins.

twist's 16-month stint in NIP comes to an end

"Moving twist from our active roster wasn’t easy, but ultimately something had to happen", Ninjas in Pyjamas's Chief Operating Officer Jonas Gundersen says about benching the 26-year-old, whose 0.90 rating over the last three months is the lowest in the lineup.

"We’ve been unable to release the massive potential and energy in our team, and over time, energy like that ends up becoming a negative spiral which is incredibly hard to break, without changing up the group dynamic. New, positive, and fresh energy is needed, and thus we ended up at changes in both roster and backroom staff."

The team decided to call up the first addition to their academy squad to fill in the gap left by twist's benching. Therefore, the 17-year-old ztr will be a part of the roster at the upcoming BLAST Premier Spring Groups, with his debut for the main team coming against the world's #1, Astralis, on Thursday.

"Despite his short time as a Ninja, Erik (ztr) has already shown formidable work ethic and potential. The whole idea behind this project was for it to be a pathway into the first team and although it might have come a bit earlier than anticipated, we’re excited to try it out," Jonas Gundersen said about bringing up the young shotcaller.

Alongside the player change, Ninjas in Pyjamas announced David McGowan, Australian former Olympic rower and coach, as their Performance Manager, as well as the addition of Frederik "⁠JAEGARN⁠" Andersson as the main team's Assistant Coach, although his primary focus will continue to be the Young Ninjas project.

REZ is staying, arguably the best player on the team right now. nawwk is inconsistent, hampus's calling isn't the best (also seems to have some personal issues with nawwk), Plopski really not getting the best out of himself. REZ is consistently good no matter how the rest of the team fares. I see him as a shox-ish player.

They had beef in GamerLegion IIRC. I think I've also heard of nawwk having issues with several other teammates in the past. Seems like he's a hard person to work with. With this information in mind, is it a coincidence that nawwk is playing like he doesn't care at the same time as hampus's calling is bad? Could be, but I don't think so.

I think NiP management wanted hampus in the team. I think it's not necessarily something that would make the team impossible to work with. Beef can always be worked out. Especially with so much staff behind them and the stakes of it all NiP have a better opportunity to sort things out than GL ever did.

The management clearly wanted him, but that doesn't mean it was the right choice. We already know that the players weren't prepared to see Lekr0 go. It also seems like their new constellation has a hard time utilizing Plopski properly. There are clearly deeper problems than just twist underperforming. For all we know, nawwk and hampus might not even share the same CS philosophy.

Yeah, I'm just saying that's who did it. IIRC the players themselves said they didn't know it was even in the works until it happened. So nawwk didn't approve it. Honestly I didn't think twist's performance was a problem. THREAT moved him away from the main AWP role into a supportive role, and praised his abilities as a support player. But, there are better players than twist, of course. Younger, above all. NiP have really been shifting their focus to having a young team, and twist is 26 after all. So with the right player added, they could find success. They could add phzy as main AWP and move nawwk to rifle, for example, or maybe ztr can fit into the team well. EDIT: To defend their choice of swapping Lekr0 - hampus is an upgrade compared to Lekr0. I'd say at the time of the signing it was a side-grade, they were both IGLs a similar level. Difference being Lekr0 was operating at his very best as an IGL, while hampus has potential to develop over time. hampus isn't the potential problem, nawwk is.

The biggest issue with NiP is that while REZ is finally playing up to his potential, Plopski isn't. Obviously twist has been pretty mediocre, but if NiP had both players at 100% you'd see a lot better results. Also, there are almost no amazing IGLs in Sweden, which is kind of crazy given their history. NiP getting rid of Lekr0 was extremely iffy, too.

He wants to play for an already established org, he said he doesn't want to join an up coming org. He also stated that he wouldn't mind being the IGL in a team and also that he would be ok helping to develop young talent in Sweden (which would mean that he would retire I guess), but I'm pretty sure he will actively look to form a new team. The auti+sunny agreement is not going to happen most likely, so my bet is that he will join a team that benches a player.

twist is the most inconsistent player in NiP and was hired for primary AWP and he was super inconsistent with the big green. Nawwk before medical break was such a beast with the op, so its logical move to have nawwk on primary awp and remove twist, who is the worst player for them right now. I know, he did quite well last tournament, but still so inconsistent and if he is not great rifler, there is no room for them. If they bring some good guy instead of him, i think nip will have everything to become top 5, surely top 10 again, which means they will be very competitive on top level :)

He was so bad with the awp actually. He missed so many ez shots (i saw it!). He was bad in fnatic and he was overall bad in NiP (AWP and Rifles as well). Only thing he did quite well was deagle shots, but thats simply not enough ;)

in 2016 and 2017 he was also great, in 2018 kinda cool, in 2019 he cooled off and then in 2020 he was pretty shit, but it's important to notice that he started to play support in 2019 so that's why he decreased in performance

They are removing the wrong guy I feel like, he maybe isn't great individually but I still think that he was important for this team. However it's still an upgrade to take ztr instead of him. But I think it's only beginning of changes in NIP.

real shame for twist, he was a huge impact player with many clutches, so talented. Probably not the most mentally resilient but the same can be said for all of NiP's current lineup. Often they destroy an opponent on map 1, or go up insane then end up somehow losing. It feels so close to being perfect synergy on a consistent basis but there always seems to be a slip up which sees them eliminated from tournaments Wish twist the best of luck in the future, would be a great addition to any team. lol he finally joins nip after years of rejecting them while he was in his prime, then gets benched due to bad performance idk if this was the right move for nip though, i don't think they're lacking individually. the team has the makings of a tournament winning team, but i feel like they have a lot of psychological obstacles and inexperience problems, so i am worried that benching the "veteran" of this lineup may lead to worse results. regardless, i hope it works out for both parties in the end
