BIG, Renegades out of playoff running in ESL Pro League

The two eliminated sides are set to meet in the final round of matches, while HEROIC and Complexity will fight for the top spot.

HEROIC, FunPlus Phoenix, and Complexity secured wins in the penultimate round of matches in ESL Pro League Season 13 Group A, stopping BIG and Renegades from advancing, while complicating things at the top.

A loss to FunPlus Phoenix, which included comebacks on Inferno and Nuke from the European mixture, ended BIG's chances in the tournament. The early Pro League elimination follows an underwhelming IEM Katowice showing from the Germans, where they finished 13-16th.

Losing series to fresh rosters cost tabseN and co.

The day started with HEROIC taking on OG, though, with the latter not playing with Nikolaj "niko" Kristensen for this series, instead fielding their benched member Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt. The Europeans managed to claim one map, Train, but HEROIC was dominant on Mirage and Overpass to extend their flawless run to six series since adding Ismail "refrezh" Ali and Rasmus "sjuush" Beck.

Lastly, Complexity joined the battle for the first place in the group by defeating Renegades. The Australian side put up good CT sides on both Inferno and Mirage, but was unable to close out either and are still without a single map won in the tournament.

The current group stage standing looks as follows:

The final matches of ESL Pro League Season 13 group A will all be played out simultaneously, at 19:00 on Friday. The result of the HEROIC - Complexity match will directly decide who will head to the play-in and skip the first round of playoffs, while OG and FunPlus Phoenix will face off for the third place in the group.

19:00 Denmark HEROIC vs. Europe Complexity
19:00 Germany BIG vs. Australia Renegades
19:00 Europe OG vs. Europe FunPlus Phoenix

on the other hand that same group has furia, gambit and navi, they would have been fucked either way depending on who they replaced in that group, honestly if they couldnt leave group A then chances are they would have lost in any other group, they fucked up and are out because of it no 2 ways about it

sure it could but im going from whats expected to happen, furia with junior have been decent so far and gambit losing to CF might be just a fluke, and in this group if big where to replace, say MIBR and play like they are did in their group they would have lost all matches the same way

Group C have 3 free opponents in C9, Team One and MIBR who are nowhere near the level of the other 3 who are basically already through to play-off because of it. Group A only had one bad opponent in Renegades while the other would completely destroy the 3 i just mentioned

It doesn't even matte if it's the most easy group or not... They were the top ratet Team by HLTV in their group and should have been at least qualified for playoffs. For a #7 team there is no way to loose 3 matches against teams that are on #13, #19 and not even on the Top30 list. I mean yeah, there a a few new linups which makes it hard to prepare against, but as a #7 team you should be able to win at least a few of them.

They make to many mistakes, seems like mid game they dont realize it. On nuke zehn was plaiyng around vent and tizian couldnt hold it twice. He made so many mistakes on mirage too. Overall they should srsly consider roster changes. Either go full german or go international. Tabsen is playing so well right now but everyone else is struggling.

I don't think they need to do roster changes just yet. But they need to rethink the way their are playing midround. Feels like they start a map with an idea in mind and are unable to adapt to shit that should become obvious as the rounds go by. And their midround calling used to be decent. Dunno what happened but they need to go back to what worked

The mistakes started with any map veto. Nuke as decider when they lose every time. Heroic vertigo as decider when they can't play it.

Kinda different here though, since the 1st place team goes straight to semis and 2nd/3rd have to Play two more bo3s to get there.

You have to keep in mind that since this is the 1st group the play offs are almost after 3-4 weeks. Alot can change in that time period.

Say you lose 1st match either way. It's the difference between 9-12th and 5-6th.

It's interesting for the teams that win, but for the general audience it hardly matters. Playoffs are like a month away still, and going straight to the semis guarantees nothing. Liquid and Spirit skipped to semis only to get eliminated there.

Big lost all bo3 cuz of nuke. Sorry but when you can't play that map... Why do you let it go for decider? Bigs new coach doesn't seems to fit. Cuz somehow the map veto went to shit since he joined. I know that towb had a lot to say in that.

sometimes it is better to pick sth else when you know you lose the map anyway. So you can give it at least a fair try. FPX was always good (not great) on Nuke. Then play Overpass or train where you have better ways to take direct duels. On Nuke it is more about room duels

Well I will be really surprised if BIG doesn't make any changes now, they are needed, it's not the first event that they struggle so hard. I hate to say it but at this point I think that there were plenty of teams that would play better here than Renegades, they are not even close to the level of those teams, and I would expect more changes if they want to be competitive on this level.

'The 24 teams will first be distributed into four round-robin, best-of-three groups of six, which will award the winning teams a place in the play-ins; a stage where the first-placed sides will play one another for a berth in the semi-finals. The second and third-placed teams will begin the playoffs in the Round of 12' hltv.org/news/31098/esl-reveal-pro-leagu..
