While Fiend were no match for Gambit, G2 were only able to edge out Spirit after a thriller overtime game.
DreamHack Masters Spring 2021 kicked off with two contrasting BO1 affairs. Tournament favorites Gambit breezed past underdogs Fiend to advance to the upper bracket semi-final of Group A, where they will meet G2 who played 35 rounds against Spirit to decide the winner.
Abdul "degster" Gasanov's 43 kills were not enough for the CIS side in the end, as the Bosnian duo Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač and Nikola "NiKo" Kovač came in clutch in the dying embers of Mirage, first to force overtime, and then to bring it over the line.
The G2 - Spirit game was reminiscent of the two team's last outing, a deciding BO3 match in the BLAST Premier Spring Showdown. The game was also closed out by the European side by the smallest of margins, with the repeated loss leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of Leonid "chopper" Vishnyakov and co.
The world No.1 team Gambit will be hoping they can lock in a place in the playoffs on the first day, as they play G2 in the upper-bracket semi-final at 16:40 . At the same time, Spirit and Fiend will be fighting for their tournament lives in the lower bracket matchup.
