EPL Group C: Four teams battle for two playoffs spots

We've crunched the numbers to calculate the chances of FaZe, MOUZ, fnatic, and BIG advancing to the playoffs after the final round of the group.

Only three matches are left to be played in Group C at ESL Pro League Season 14 as we are heading into the final round of play, which is set to kick off at 20:00 . Four teams are still in the running for two spots in the knockout stages of the tournament with Natus Vincere able to breathe a little easier — they cannot be eliminated anymore due to favorable records in three-way ties with MOUZ and fnatic and BIG and fnatic — and Evil Geniuses slated to finish sixth in the group.

FaZe are hoping to avoid a three-way tie with mouz and fnatic

It is all to play for as far as FaZe, MOUZ, fnatic, and BIG are concerned, so let's break down what needs to happen for each of the teams to advance to the playoffs and how their chances are looking ahead of the fifth round, calculated based on odds the bet365 bookies have for each match as of Tuesday morning.

Current standings

1-2. Russia Natus Vincere (3-1) - confirmed to advance
1-2. Europe FaZe (3-1)
3-5. Europe MOUZ (2-2)
3-5. Sweden fnatic (2-2)
3-5. Germany BIG (2-2)
6. North America Evil Geniuses (0-4) - confirmed eliminated

Remaining matches

20:00 Russia Natus Vincere vs. Europe FaZe (72.2%-27.8%)
20:00 Germany BIG vs. Europe MOUZ (43.6%-56.4%)
20:00 North America Evil Geniuses vs. Sweden fnatic (34.3%-65.7%)

FaZe - 74% chance

FaZe are in a prime position to lock down one of the top three spots in the group due to just one of the eight remaining combinations putting them outside of the qualifying places. Not only do they have a chance to clinch first place in the group if they beat Natus Vincere, they will still advance to the knockout stages even in case of a loss as long as at least one of BIG and Evil Geniuses win in the other two matches.

A three-way tie with fnatic and MOUZ for second place is the only scenario Finn "karrigan" Andersen and company need to avoid, as it would end with FaZe in fourth place because of an unfavorable map difference in the head-to-head results with the two teams.

Although this three-way tie is the most likely scenario out of eight to happen given that Natus Vincere, MOUZ, and fnatic are favored to win their respective matches, in combination the odds are well in FaZe's favor at 74%.

mousesports - 56% chance

Things couldn't be simpler for MOUZ, as the Christopher "dexter" Nong-led squad is the only one of the four whose fate relies only on their own result. A win against BIG would guarantee them second or third place in the group and a spot in the playoffs, while a loss would see them eliminated in fourth or fifth place. With the odds putting MOUZ as slight favorites in their final match, they are sitting at a 56% chance to make it through.

fnatic - 47% chance

On the other hand, fnatic's chances depend on a result other than their own as they head into a must-win match against the bottom-placed Evil Geniuses who no longer have anything to lose. The Swedish-British squad need to avoid a three-way tie featuring Natus Vincere at all costs on top of that, and for that they require the CIS side to beat FaZe.

As Natus Vincere are the heavy favorites against FaZe and fnatic similarly so in their encounter with Evil Geniuses, Freddy "KRIMZ" Johansson team's odds don't look too bad at 47%.

BIG - 23% chance

Meanwhile, BIG are up against tall odds ahead of the fifth round in Group C at just 23%. The Germans are heading into a toss-up series against MOUZ which they need to win, and to steer clear of a losing three-way tie with FaZe and fnatic they also need a large upset to take place in at least one of the other two matches.

So Navi can just skip the final match as they are already qualified and don't care if they end up top, second or third.

One more match means an extra chance to get eliminated and less time to prepare for you next opponent and rest. So yes, it does matter.

Believe mousesports has the best chances as they just need to win vs big. I wouldn’t overestimate fazes chances. Losing vs navi, and fnatic winning vs eg are more likely than not. And if mouse then wins vs big, faze is out

FaZe either: -needs to win against Na'Vi which puts them at 1st -EG to win against fnatic to avoid the three way tie In these scenarios, it'd be Na'Vi, mouz and FaZe. The order will differ tho.

I think out of all 4, Faze has the least of chances to go through. Navi will be very motivated to take 1st place while fnatic should win ez against EG. BIG knows that they are most likely out so I think Mouz will win that.

One: that's not how chance works. Two: I think Faze - Na'Vi is about 40-60, while Fnatic-EG is probably Fnatic's. I seem to be the only one who actually thinks that Mouz-BIG is 50-50. Both seem in similar form and I think it could be an interesting match-up. I also don't think BIG is the type of team to think "Hmmm... In most cases we'll be out, so let's not try". They will probably still try to win.

Okay guys, let's be real. The most important match-up is Mouseports-BIG. Mouse will ban D2/Vertigo, while BIG probably ban Ancient (unless they do what they did against Na'Vi and have a plan on it). Mouse pick Mirage (maybe Inferno) and win that probably, while BIG pick D2/Vertigo and win that probably. Nuke third map can go either way, with both teams really liking it. So this match is very 50-50. BIG has shown that with the loss of Xantares at the moment, the rest of their team (K1to and Tizian especially) are actually playing better. Meanwhile, Mouseports has had one good results, 4 months ago. They need their players to step-up the same way they did against Fnatic, which I'm not convinced they can. Overall I slightly favour BIG here. As for the other matches. Na'Vi will probably beat Faze and I doubt Fnatic will be the one to lose to EG, leading to Na'Vi, Faze and Fnatic going through.

Out of Faze , Fnatic and Mouz, I think Faze has the hardest conditions to qualify. So The Odds are against them. But still anything could happen.

As you can see these numbers don't show the reality at all, fnatic has way more chances to qualify than Faze, that's simply because fnatic has a lot more chances to win their match than faze has

Wow you guys do a really good job with those kind of calculating it for % job. Striker is doing a great job, I love how HLTV is having more and more kind of threads or however you call it. That's really nice. Imo todays results are going to be : NaVi > FaZe BIG > mouz fnatic > EG so it's the case no.1, in which NaVi, fnatic and FaZe advance. I'm pretty happy with that. This group was really nice to watch.
