Valve's Major rulebook takeaways and what they mean for PGL Antwerp

Here are some points to remember going into the upcoming Major cycle.

On Wednesday, the Spring Major of 2022 was announced to be PGL Antwerp, with the Romanian tournament organizer revealing that the tournament would take place in the Belgian port city on May 9-22.

Valve made their own announcement shortly after, which contained a supplemental rulebook containing a set of rules and stipulations that must be followed at all Valve-sponsored events, enforced on top of any given tournament organizer's own ruleset.

PGL Antwerp will have a more streamlined qualification process

While this rulebook officially codified many existing but not publicly stated rules from Valve, there were many changes compared to previous Major cycles. Here are some of the most important notes to remember.

An unforgiving qualification system

- No more points. Only one RMR tournament per region will decide all Major teams

- RMRs have been consolidated into three regions: Europe, America, Asia

The first part that will stand out to fans is that rather than running multiple Regional Major Ranking events and awarding points to teams at each, there will be a single RMR event in each region, awarding direct qualification to the Major.

Furthermore, the previous six regions used during the online era (and the four used during the Minor era) are being compressed down to three: Europe, Americas, and Asia-Pacific. This means that Europe and CIS will play in one mega-region in a bid to qualify for the Major.

Invites to the RMR tournaments will be awarded to teams who placed in the Legends stage of the previous Major (the top 16). The rest of the spots at each event will be filled through qualifiers, the format of which is currently decided by the tournament organizer.

No more inconsistencies in RMR formats

- 1-2 Major spots: 4-team GSL

- 3-4 spots: 8-team double elimination

- 5-8 spots: 16-team Swiss

- 9 or more spots: Split into multiple groups

Following up on streamlining of the qualification through the Regional Major Ranking events, Valve also standardized the formats of the RMR events for each region according to the number of spots that region has at the Major.

This addresses one of the biggest criticisms of the past two RMR cycles, which saw radically different formats used between both regions and tournament organizers, resulting in inconsistencies in how easy or hard it was for certain teams to qualify.

Natus Vincere are Europe seed #1

While each region will use a format corresponding to the number of spots that region has at the Major (as shown above), particularly large regions will split up their RMR teams into multiple groups to make the qualification process more manageable. Each of the groups will essentially function as its own event and will both award qualification to the Major.

Regional slot distribution is flexible

- Number of teams representing a region can change from Major to Major

- Only Contenders will remain fixed

Following the much-criticized regional slot distribution of PGL Stockholm, which was based on the results of StarLadder Berlin, Valve made slight alterations to the system of determining regional slot distribution, allowing for changes in the future.

While the slot distribution for the Legend and Challenger teams is strictly determined by the previous Major's results, with the top eight earning Legends spots for their region and the 9th-16th teams earning Challengers spots, the distribution for the Contenders will always be the same, with Europe and Americas having 3 spots, while Asia-Pacific has 2.

What does this mean for PGL Major Antwerp?

For the upcoming PGL Major in Belgium, this will be the regional slot distribution, as based on the results of PGL Stockholm:

- Legends: 7 Europe, 1 Americas
- Challengers: 6 Europe, 2 Americas
- Contenders: 3 Europe, 3 Americas, 2 Asia-Pacific

These are the teams who are currently set to receive invites to their respective RMR event, and which slots that event will award at the Major:

Europe 2 (Swiss)
Europe G2
Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas
Europe FaZe
EuropeUnknown flag cis Qualifier x10
Americas (Swiss)
Brazil FURIA

North AmericaSouth America Qualifier x15

Asia-Pacific (GSL)
AsiaOceania Qualifier x4

It's important to note that, due to losing their core from PGL Major Stockholm, Liquid and Evil Geniuses will not receive an invite to the Americas RMR tournament. Based on the rulebook, it is possible that their invites will be handed out to the next two teams in line, which should be paiN and GODSENT.

Well, the "americas" thing can be debated. Depending of regions, america is considered one big continent that can be divided into two (even three). Even the olympic rings consider americA as only one continent. I think that only enlish speaking countries separate NA and SA (I might be wrong). But going to the point of the other guy's comment, america(s) has 5 total slots. He claims that NA has only 1? So SA has 4 slots? Doesnt make any sense. It used to be the other way round. Or did I misunderstand his comment?

The Americas does have 5 slots, but they are combined together. Meaning that NA and SA have to qualify through the same RMR, competing against each other.

I mean oce teeams don't have to go through the aus qualifier, since majority of our teams aren't scrimming 24/7 in europe, it's easier to qualify for majors through the ocee qualifier. If players like Alistair and INS signed to an eu team and played in every tier 2 eu event they can, they would becomee even better players

Sucks that the entire Asia-Pacific region is going to be distilled down to a 4-team tournament. Obviously the qualifiers will be bigger, but it's going to make it so much harder for teams to make an impression on the big stage.

Basically means double elimination. Opening match: Team A plays Team B (Team A wins) Team C plays Team D (Team C wins) Winners' match: Team A plays Team C (Team A wins) Losers' match: Team B plays Team D (Team B wins) Decider match: Team C plays Team B (Team C wins) Final standings: 1 Team A 2 Team C 3 Team B 4 Team D

+1 Lost_wanderer doesnt get the rules it only means no more fixed legend spots for next majors + it means regions will be cheering on their own region(s) when their team goes out so they can get a legend spot next time.
2022-02-07 12:33

The higher amount games there are, more likely the best teams will go through and less chance of flukes happening. But how big of an qualifier tournament can there realistically be? Also I would argue that its harder to get 3-1 in europe qualifier than to get 3-2 in the actual major first swiss, which would essentially result to same outcome.

Last RMR events: Europe - Fiend went 3-2 in a group that involved Faze and NiP, and got to the playoffs CIS - Inde Irae went 4-1 in a group involving VP and Gambit, not making it to the playoffs because they lost the tiebreaks All groups are flukeable
2022-02-07 22:19

While I agree with general sentiment, those groups were not comparable to swiss groups. Those were bo1 round robin where everyone plays everyone. That means that first one or two game does not feel so important because one does not have to win all the games. Especially when you know to be much better team than your opposition. In swiss however every win gets you forward so it is more important to actually win as soon as possible. And of course you can make group which is not flukeable. Make something like triple swiss system where you get points based on how you place every round, all bo5 games. That would heavily diminish any randomness between teams. Its not in any way realistic to run any qualifier like that, but thats different point.

No, the system was different. There is a major, 8 teams who made into play-offs, were automatically qualified to the next major (the main stage). Teams who ended a major with the 9-14th places, were qualified to the challengers stage Two teams who ended a tournament with the 15-16 places, were had to play a minor. The system of minor was the next. Two open minor qualifications, two teams from two these events qualified to the closed minor qualification, were 8 teams qualified to the europe minor. Europe minor, 2 teams qualified to the challengers stage, and 1 team to the minor play-in, where only one team had a chance to qualify to the challengers stage. From the whole minor cycle, 3 European + 3 American + 2 from Ocean + 2 Asian teams were qualified to the challengers stage, where 8 teams qualified to the main stage. But with the RMR, and especially with new rules. The mixing of Europe and CIS regions to one, roughly speaking, it will be the same major, however, without the American and Asian teams.

There is no more CIS indeed. Ukraine or idk Lithuania arent no more CIS. Lithuania never was indeed, sorry (Neither Latvia and Estonia). It doesnt exist anymore as a region, CIS, neither as a states conglomeration. It could be "devided" into Eastern and Western Europe, so there may be any sens.

I think me and my friends (we play a lot of structured matchmaking) have a good chance at winning this major.

Bo5 sucks. Too long for the players, the casters and the fans.

7 spots of legend stage for EU+CIS, does that mean you need to be in 1st to 3rd in your group? and the 7th will be a tie breaker between 4ths match or the best 4th out of groups?

No. First rmr group will have 4 legend spots because that group has more invited teams from Stockholm major

So if you only consider the bennefits for the next major, Challengers and Legends are the same, but if you consider the bennefits for the same major of the RMR, Challengers and Containers are the same, this looks fine, getting a free pass for next major was a bit too much, Im glad they fixed it

Valve also put heavy restrictions on coaches for the major and they are only allowed to communicate with - and even be seen by - the players during technical time outs. I don’t know if any reason have been given for this but it makes the coaches roles less influential, thus making it all about the players. It may also be a step to ensure the continuous integrity of the major. Personally, I don’t mind coaches having a more direct impact on the games, and I am surely going to miss the energy of zonic at the big events!

>This means that Europe and CIS will play in one mega-region for the first time in a bid to qualify for the Major. Sorry about that, but this is a list of Majors, where CIS and EU teams played in one qualifier for Major spots: Dreamhack Winter 2013 ESL One: Cologne 2014 DreamHack Winter 2014 ESL One: Cologne 2015 That's definitely not the first time, when teams from EU and CIS played for a major slot in one qualifier.

New RMR event kinda sucks, a slip up is going to be chaotic. NAVI lost to MIBR in BLAST, so if that crap happens again, RIP NAVI at Major

A lot reminiscent of the old minors, though a multitude of points are different. Hopefully, this major doesn't disappoint in terms of production....
