What will the regional distribution for IEM Rio look like?

The overall regional slot distribution will remain the same as it was at PGL Major Antwerp.

- Slot distribution for IEM Rio to remain the same
- Teams who placed top 16 in Antwerp receive invites to next RMR

Following the release of Valve's standardized Major cycle system in early 2022, a method for adjusting the regional slot distribution at the Majors was added to account for the departed legacy invite system.

Much like the old system, the distribution is based on teams' performance from the previous Major, allocating Legends status spots to regions whose teams made it to the playoffs and Challengers spots to the regions who placed 9th-16th.

Imperial secured Americas an additional Challenger spot

For the Americas region, critical performances came in the form of Liquid and Imperial. Securing key upset victories in their 2-2 matches during the Challengers stage and advancing to the next phase kept their hopes of making it farther in the Major alive and secured a better path for their region in the future.

While the distribution of Contenders slots always remains the same at three for Europe, three for the Americas, and two for Asia, the distribution for the Legends and Challengers is directly tied to the results of the previous Major. In this case, Liquid and Imperial making the top 16 stage in Antwerp secured the Americas two Challengers slots at the following Major.

Below is shown the regional distribution for the IEM Rio 2022 Major followed by the team that earned their region that spot due to their performance at PGL Antwerp:

Legends

Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (Spirit)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (Natus Vincere)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (ENCE)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (Ninjas in Pyjamas)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (FaZe)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (Copenhagen Flames)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (HEROIC)
North America South America Americas (FURIA)

Challengers

Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (G2)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (Vitality)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (BIG)
North America South America Americas (Imperial)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (Cloud9)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (Outsiders)
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe (Bad News Eagles)
North America South America Americas (Liquid)

Contenders

Europe Unknown flag cis Europe
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe
North America South America Americas
Asia Oceania Asia
Europe Unknown flag cis Europe
North America South America Americas
North America South America Americas
Asia Oceania Asia

Another benefit of placing in the top 16 portion of the Major is receiving an invite to the next Regional Major Ranking tournament for each team's respective region. With the open qualification process being historically so brutal, being able to start directly in the RMR event itself can be very important for a team's chances at repeat qualifying.

On another important note, as a result of the number of slots for each region being the exact same for IEM Rio, the formats of the RMR tournaments will also remain the same, pending any changes from Valve.

you still have to qualify through the rmr this article is about which slots the regions get ie Americas had 1 playoffs team (furia) so they'll have one legend spot in the rmr

They dont have locked in places. The amount of spots available for each region in legends and challengers was decided by the teams that made top 16 of Antwerp. That top 16 have also all autimatically qualified for the RMR however.

fk IEM. No one managed to buy tickets to the major on Brazil, me and another 20 friends tried to buy the tickets since the gates opened, waited 3 hours in a fake line just to get the message that the tickets were over. No one managed to get the tickets this event is a failure.

Sure, if "medonhoso" couldn't buy his ticket, then obviously it's because bots were programmed to buy them all first... no doubts about that.

No, they fixed this mistake already. CIS is not a continent and should not be trated like one.

The point is they have 2 EU rmrs and the major slots aren't even divided equally for them, because of the odd number of legend and contender spots. Then one rmr is harder than the other so they give that rmr the extra legend spot but there's still 8 spots for each rmr so having one rmr with better teams in it doesn't make any sense. Then they have the issue of the Asia-pacific rmr only having 4 teams in it and the qualifiers for those not even region locked properly. There were Australian and China teams in the middle eastern qualifier. The problem is far from fixed.

Africans can choose to play on any RMR, so that's why ATK played on Americas RMR. At the time, they had 2 Europeans, 2 Africans, and one American on the team, but it's like the Africans can declare themselves Americans.

I’m not entirely sure how it works, but it seems like any team can choose where to play. LFO and Lynn Vision (an Australian and Chinese team) played in the Middle Eastern qualifier last time around. Changing entire RMR’s is probably based on where the team is located, and SA teams historically played out of NA so ATK probably does the same.

Teams are allowed to play in their region or a harder one i believe. If liquid said they were going to bootcamp in europe and play through the eu qualifier, i think tos would allow it.

No, they can't. Liquid (with this roster) can just play on the Americas RMR.

Why can br teams play in the NA qualifier for Americas RMR? It is because they live there and the NA qualifier was harder than the SA one. After antwerp if an NA team decided to relocate and play in europe indefinately, I don't think they would be forced to play in the americas qualifier since the EU one is harder.

No, you're completely wrong. Nationality defines where you can play. Middle Eastern qualifier is still qualifying for the Asia/Oceania RMR, and that's why LFO and Lynn Vision can play there. It's the exact same situation of teams from SA playing the qualify on NA. They can just because it's still qualifying to the Americas RMR anyway. African players are wildcards, and as I said, kind of declare any nationality they want to.

DotMax and also there was a Turkish/Lebanese mix called Tempest Gaming. They’re probably international students? I found the rulebook online and it says that the regional assignment is determined by the citizenship of the majority of the players, so idk what’s going on there.

The team names are put there just to show why that region got that spot. For example Americas gets a new legends spot because FURIA made it to the new champions stage.

No, this teams only secured a spot in the rmr. What it means is that because of the results in this major, the american rmr will give 1 spot directly to the next major's legend stage (because of furia) and 2 spots to the challenger stage (because of imperial and liquid). Same logic applies to the European RMR.

I don't like this system, I think the TOP 8 should be secured at the next Major, I just think that's the way it should be, this way making it to the TOP 8 seems way more valuable. Just my opinion.
