The Danish powerhouse are set for changes for the first time in nearly a year and a half.

HEROIC have announced that Ismail "⁠refrezh⁠" Ali will no longer be part of the team's roster. The 24-year-old will explore new opportunities while he remains under contract with the organization for the time being.

In their first change to the playing roster since February 2021, when refrezh and Rasmus "⁠sjuush⁠" Beck joined the team, HEROIC have stated that despite being highly competitive over the past year the team has struggled to take the final step.

After competition returned to LAN in mid-2021 the Danes often made it deep at tournaments, placing in the top four at PGL Major Stockholm and IEM Katowice and in the top eight at the latest Major in Antwerp, but they were never able to reach the heights that saw them win ESL Pro League Season 13 in the online era.

refrezh is on his way out of Heroic

Their sole title on LAN came only last week, when, as the only top 10 team in attendance, HEROIC toppled Astralis in the grand final of the Pinnacle Cup Championship in Lund.

refrezh was the team's lowest-rated player on LAN at 0.96, notably going missing in some of the biggest events the team attended, most recently recording a measly 0.82 rating at PGL Major Antwerp.

His replacement is yet to be announced, but with the team's next foray at IEM Cologne being only a little over two weeks away, it is likely already decided. According to a report from TV2.dk from June 11, the Danish squad were targeting Copenhagen Flames member Jakob "⁠jabbi⁠" Nygaard, who has recently been listed for transfer in the Danish organization along with Rasmus "⁠HooXi⁠" Nielsen and Rasmus "⁠Zyphon⁠" Nordfoss.

"Since the beginning of this 5-man roster, we have always believed that the team were capable of great things," HEROIC's announcement reads. "However, during the last year Heroic has been highly competitive in the major tournaments but has struggled to take that final last step."

"Therefore, despite all the qualities of refrezh, we have decided that it was time to try something new."

I don't think they should have cut refrezh at all. Team synergy, trust and atmosphere matters more. Heroic had that going for them and now they don't But if you're going to swap out a player who is a good teammate, it should be for an insane rating superstar. I just don't see it if it's jabbi

Hard to know what happens within the team but maybe they felt they were lacking that with refrezh the last months (to be #1) and want to take a gamble on jabbi. I think jabbi was an important piece of copenhagen flames success and since he's 18 years old and has really crisp aim I think the gamble is worth it. But only time will tell how he fits in the team. I think he can be really good if he find a stable form and gets comfortable in the team.

Ye I can see that perspective, but it feels like Heroic don't have that much to lose. Considering they were one of the few stable teams coming into 2022, I think they really had a chance to win something, they kind of needed to. Allot of missed opportunities and it feels like they have hit a bit of a ceiling. One mix up in roster might be what takes them to the next level. Hard to see them fall off with a firepower upgrade, but we'll see.

Out of all Heroic players he is the least flexible imo. And that's the problem with how they run strats, they need players who can do a lot of things and who can perform well even when thrown in weird positions. Guy is a good shot and will probably perform better on a team that has more strict roles and there's not that much shuffling around based on spawns and shit. I can’t agree with this, but I can understand. Heroic just looks like a better version of FURIA, a team that can causes some noise and defeat top tier competition once here and there but can’t get to the next step and finally win something relevant (Pinnacle cup is fine but those guys aren’t playing this game to win Pinnacle trophies).
