Vitality ease past Endpoint in ESL Pro League opener

The favorites did not disappoint with a clean 2-0 victory to kick off their Pro League run.

Vitality tripped up at their first event with Lotan "Spinx" Giladi, missing out on qualifying directly to the BLAST Fall Final, but have now started off their ESL Pro League Season 16 group stage bid on the right foot with a 2-0 victory against the Endpoint underdogs.

Vitality's two French players stood above the rest in this opening series. Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut did so on Vertigo, where he racked up a 2.02 rating, while Dan "apEX" Madesclaire took over on Inferno, which he ended with a 1.87.

ZywOo dominated on Vertigo, topping the board with a 2.02 rating

Vitality’s dominance on the CT side of Vertigo came early, with a 7-1 lead and ZywOo tallying double the kills than rounds played. The French star had 20 kills by the 11th round, making his silenced M4A1 sing. Joey "CRUC1AL" Steusel downed three B defenders with an AK to get a second round on the board for his team, and then a sloppy defense on A by Vitality in which two players died to molotov opened the doors for Endpoint to claim the remaining rounds in the half.

Vitality rallied on the attack after winning the second pistol round and ran away with the map as ZywOo tallied 30 kills by round 20. Endpoint put up six defenses in a row when up against match point, but ultimately fell in the 28th round, 12-16.

Endpoint had a perfect start on the CT side of Inferno, 3-0, but frustration started to creep up in the first gun round as Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye grimaced after Vitality broke the A defenses to get on the board. From there on out the terrorists took over, going on a nine-round streak before giving up one more round in an 11-4 half.

apEX, who was leading the charge for Vitality on Inferno, hit 20 kills after racking up a double in the second pistol round, which his team won. From there on out it was smooth sailing for the defenders, who gave up just one round out of six to close out proceedings 16-5.

Vitality will have a tough challenge in their next series on Thursday, when they will face the No. 6 team in the world, Ninjas in Pyjamas at 19:30 . Endpoint will go up against another team with a negative record on the second day of play, Spirit, who lost their opening match against Natus Vincere.

1.26 vs top 10 teams in his career. device is GOATed with 1.17 career rating the woo is miles clear of that.

device maps played vs top 10 : 942; zywoo maps played vs top 10 : 413; device won 4 majors with 2 of them being major mvp. At this moment u can't compare both of them unless zywoo wins a major

413 is already a very significant sample so it doesn't mean anything that device has more maps

yeah but device has more than double the number of maps, if u talk about like a 300ish map difference i can agree, not 500

Nope it doesn't work like that. Even if device had 10 times his number of maps, as long as that number is statistically significant, it doesn't matter. If you've seen confidence intervals for gaussian distributions in high school or uni you can compute them and check by yourself.

But do you know the sample size so that you can effectively use the Central limit theorem for the confidence interval that you require? Maybe the rating has a lower asymptote when the number of maps increase.

Why do you want to check whether you can use the central limit theorem? Rating 2.0 follows a normal distribution of standard deviation ~0.3. From there getting the confidence intervals is immediate

Because you don't know if it follows a normal distribution? What if it follows t-student one with large tails? And even using normal distribution, the maps are still low for a 95% confidence interval is still low. Remember that the CLT only works for sample size -> infinity.

You can never know for sure, but it's a very safe assumption if you look at any player's matches and graph their rating The 95% confidence interval here has radius around 0.4 if I recall correctly. In the context of comparing zywoo to device, it is small enough to say with pretty high confidence that zywoo is not going to suddenly drop to a 1.07 average over his next 500 maps, which would be required to reach device's rating

apEX can post his performance in a pinned tweet. It has been 5 years he didn't have such rating (he is used to 0.6 and 45 ADR).
