G2 defeat BIG in two overtime maps to remain undefeated in Malta

BIG had the decider map within reach, but couldn’t find an opening on the attacking side of Vertigo after hitting match point at 15-8.

G2’s second ESL Pro League victory in as many matches, this time against BIG, reinforces them as strong playoff contenders in Group B, although the international squad still has to go up against the group’s heavy hitters FaZe as well as Outsiders.

The German squad on the other hand is now up against the wall after falling to Outsiders in their opener before letting two overtimes slip away against G2. Not all hope is lost as they will be favorites in two of their three final matches against FTW and MIBR before meeting the final boss, FaZe, in their closing group stage series.

huNter- and NiKo were the standouts for G2

G2 and BIG started on the latter's map pick of Mirage, but G2 set up a strong defense from the start and went 6-1 after 7 rounds. A Karim "Krimbo" Moussa triple got BIG back on the board and they linked four rounds on the offensive to get within two, 5-7, as Krimbo tallied two more triple kills in the process. G2 finally bounced back to stay ahead and hit double digits at the half with three Justin "jks" Savage multi-kill rounds.

A triple by Josef "faveN" Baumann locked in the second pistol round for BIG as G2 won only one of the first five rounds. The map then got wild with back-and-forth rounds that slowly crept G2 closer and closer to the finish line. faveN turned up with three straight multi-kills to get his team from 11-15 to 14-15 before BIG pushed it to overtime.

Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač went above and beyond in extra time, putting up four multi-kills to his name in five rounds as G2 cruised to a 19-16 victory.

BIG bottled a 15-8 lead on Vertigo and lost the series 0-2

BIG had an Important defense going into Vertigo, G2 pick, and did well taking an early 4-1 lead. It didn’t last, however, as the Rasmus "HooXi" Nielsen-led squad tied things up by the eighth round, and that was the end for the European squad. BIG took over and won out the half 11-4.

BIG had it in their hands to close out the match after a powerful start on the attack winning four out of the first eight rounds to hit match point, 15-8, but then choked as G2 mounted a comeback by winning seven straight rounds to force a second overtime in as many maps.

Nils "k1to" Gruhne and Florian "syrsoN" Rische got doubles in the first round of overtime to get ahead before the two teams traded rounds before the half. A big four-kill round by HooXi including a 1vs2 clutch killing two CTs trying to defuse tied things back up, 17-17. Five kills by Nikola "NiKo" Kovač in the final two rounds put the final nail in BIG’s coffin, as G2 secured their map 19-17 to end the series.

The match ended the same way as their BLAST Premier Fall Groups series, with a 2-0 victory for G2, but BIG can take solace in the nail biting series compared to the blowout of the match two weeks prior. "They watched what they did bad, this time against us they just practiced," huNter- said after the match. "They wanted to do things better and it’s not easy to beat the same team twice in two weeks. They did a lot better today, we were not on point in all aspects, but still we won and that’s the most important."

yeah, specially on one of the lastest round, peeking for nothing and stuff like that. He was really average. He was really not trading his teammates. Faven was the only reason why big went to overtime on mirage. 79.3 adr and he doesn't play support roles. pretty average. 0.97 in the last 3 months, 1.00 in the last 6 months, but he is playing great lately.

Big without a lan awper = bad. You cannot blame kito for syrson's horrible performance. Hooxi has better stats than him.

But tizian + kito is huge lack of firepower. Someone has to step up. Krimbo is playing like a bot thought.

It is a team game. You blame Syrson. And I say He couldn't perform cuz Tizian's strong support play is missed.

Tbh it is a bit stretching. Syrson struggled on lan with tizian too. He is a bedroom warrior unfortunately.

It reminds me the Jackz-Hunter narrative. Hunter needs jackz to perform. Not really, as you can see. Syrson is not a new young awper who need nurturing. The guys is struggling on LAN, had horrible decision-making like on the last round (watching tiny angles, while been alone on the ramp). Big is heavily awp-centric, they give him a lot of tools to perform and he doesn't. The guy is not even a support awper and he has stats of a support/igl player rn. There are no excuses at this point.

I said it is a team game. it means if a player like Tizian is gone and the new lineup has more firepower but less support skill then team performance can drop. Especially for a team that relies on team play. This isn't Navi that can win games on a bad day just by aim. Hunter-jackz thing is another story cuz Hunter said he personally needs him.

that is exactly what I have been feeling. That they traded team chemistry and structure for hltv rating. Tizian did fine and so did the team in 2022. Top10-15 is fine. But this showing now is atrocious...

If syrson continues his horrible performance on lan, I would try slaxz. Sure syrson is way better but the gap between lan and online is huge. Also, slack is probably a better rifer.

He is 19yo, he still has time to improve, he hasn't even been on the team for 9 months, it's not because B1T and Kjaerbye won Major at 18 that it will be like this with everyone...

But you talk like Faven was the problem today and it was not. And krimbo was at some point. You can see his team are getting angry about him because he doesn't follow the strats or bait /or not trade his teammates.

Read it again, reason and interpret, he is playing bad, just like everyone else at BIG, except for TabseN, the difference is that he doesn't have the experience at this level of play that the other players on the team have and he's only 19 years old.

Yeah, but bad comms, doesnt play as teammates is not a good sign tbh. I'm not saying -krimbo, but everyone blames kito or faven when the guy is not doing that much better. I feel big is more missing an awper who can plya well on Lan more than naything else.

All the mistakes you mentioned can be improved over time, even more for someone who is 19yo... And K1to doesn't work, he's been on the team for years and it didn't work, FaveN i even understand the point... But Syrson and K1to need go out

It was a fun match to watch, G2 is showing that this lineup is promising and they are managing to get out of mental slumps which is huge. On the other hand I am not sold on kito in BiG. Nor Syrson.

Seeing BIG in such a state just hurts to see, because Tabsen deserves so much better. He's been working his butt off for years now, giving it everything he has and everytime when it looks like they finally found the missing pieces to become successful something else goes wrong that denies it.
