Cloud9-Imperial match headlines day two of IEM Rio Major Challengers Stage

The two teams will face in a rematch of the PGL Major Antwerp Legends Stage elimination game.

The first day of the IEM Rio Major has come to an end after nearly 14 hours, over the span of which two rounds of the Swiss system played out in the Challengers Stage and a handful of favorites suffered surprising losses.

The most notable of those came in the second round, where Grayhound beat Cloud9 in overtime on Dust2 to send Vladislav "⁠nafany⁠" Gorshkov's men to the 0-2 pool, where they will now have to battle through three best-of-three series if they want to advance to the Legends Stage.

Imperial will try to fend off Cloud9 as they previously did in Antwerp

Vitality also suffered a loss to GamerLegion in the 1-0 pool, but there is no reason to ring the alarm bells quite yet as they still have an extra life remaining. One thing these upsets did cause, however, is a substantial change to the Buchholz seeding for teams, promising some tantalizing and heartbreaking matches to come in the remainder of the first stage.

The main one to look forward to on day two is an elimination series between Cloud9 and Imperial, a rematch of the 1-2 elimination game between the two teams that took place in the Legends Stage of PGL Major Antwerp. There, the Brazilian team had come out on top 2-1 to send Cloud9 packing from the Major, and Gabriel "⁠FalleN⁠" Toledo's men now have the chance to repeat history in Rio, and this time with the roar of a home crowd behind them.

Other matches on day two include fnatic taking on MOUZ and GamerLegion facing Bad News Eagles, with winner of each advancing to the Legends Stage. Highlight matches in the 1-1 bracket include Vitality clashing with Outsiders and OG going up against FURIA, the only Brazilian team who have recorded a win in Rio so far.

They're drawn from seeding. It's not random, but it's still lucky how the matches today turned out. Not that I'm complaining. I'd be ecstatic if EG make it, and it's a super cool storyline for BNE or GL to make it undefeated

+1 the Swiss system is one of the best in my eyes. Very punishing for bad performances and rewarding for being on point. The major isnt necessarly about being a overall great team, but hitting you peak at the right time

bo1 format is really prone to have some flukers on the top tho.

It does favour flukers somewhat, but I think it's also the open circuit that surprises many teams. Eg. Gamer Legion and BNE are teams that aren't usually able to participate in ESL/Blast tournaments, so top teams aren't used to face that kind of opponent.
