Heroic beat FURIA on home turf to make IEM Rio Major grand final

The Danish team advance to their first-ever Major final after overcoming the hometown favorites.

HEROIC are through to the grand final of the IEM Rio Major after defeating FURIA in the semi-final, overcoming the Brazilian team 2-1 (6-16 Inferno, 19-17 Ancient, 16-5 Nuke) to earn themselves a spot in the title-deciding match versus Outsiders.

The team overcame a home crowd that was roaring their support for FURIA, recovering from a blowout on their own map pick to close out the series. It is a momentous occasion for Casper "cadiaN" Møller in particular, who attended the first-ever CS:GO Major and has now captained a young Danish team to a grand final in his seventh Major appearance, and also further validates HEROIC's roster move during the off-season when they added Jakob "jabbi" Nygaard to replace Ismail "refrezh" Ali in hopes of breaking their title duck.

FURIA will likely head home head in hands after suffering defeat just shy of making the grand final in front of a Brazilian crowd at a Major, especially after already overcoming Natus Vincere in the quarter-finals. The team can still be proud of achieving their deepest Major placement to date, but will likely look back on the loss with much regret as they watch the final day of the Major unfold, as well as in the coming weeks.

Heroic have made their first-ever Major final

HEROIC began their efforts to silence the home crowd in good form on their pick of Inferno, securing a pistol round victory and converting against FURIA's ensuing force-buy and eco to go up 3-0. A triple kill from Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato denied the Danish team the chance to continue their streak once both sides had guns in hand, and from there the double AWPs of Andrei "arT" Piovezan and Rafael "saffee" Costa helped FURIA establish a foothold on the defense, further multi-kills from the pair punishing poor trading from HEROIC and enabling a seven-round spree for the Brazilian team to take the lead. cadiaN sniped down three to finally put a halt to FURIA's streak, and his team managed to add two more rounds to their tally in the half to give themselves a fighting chance, 6-9, heading into the side swap.

HEROIC's defensive efforts ended up leaving much to be desired in the second half — lack of initiative on their part and relentless aggression from arT gave cadiaN's men almost no room to maneuver, and FURIA quickly closed the distance toward the end of the map. Up against match point, HEROIC finally looked set to get their first CT round on the board as they went up 5vs3, but even that round failed to go their way as KSCERATO stepped up with a triple kill to allow FURIA to close out the map, 16-6.

Ancient began in similar fashion with HEROIC converting a pistol round win and anti-eco for a 2-0 start, only for FURIA to once again find the winning formula and secure five of the next six rounds to take the lead. The Brazilian team's lead didn't last this time, however, and HEROIC seized control of the map thanks in part to stellar impact from Rasmus "sjuush" Beck, who stepped up with information plays and late-round multi-kills to help his team pull ahead 10-5 at the break.

HEROIC didn't let their foot off the gas when they began their own attacking effort, further impact from sjuush and an anti-eco ace from Martin "stavn" Lund helping the Danes cruise to a dominant 15-5 lead. FURIA refused to roll over and concede the map though, and despite having their backs up against the wall, slowly began to chip away the deficit. A key component in that effort was KSCERATO, whose defense of the A bombsite absolutely crushed HEROIC's T-side, with the 23-year-old Brazilian rifler mustering an 18-1 K-D and six multi-kill rounds to power a ten-round spree for his team to fight all the way to overtime. The immense comeback effort was all for naught in the end however, and HEROIC managed to post one T side round before pulling off a flawless CT side to finally close out their opponent's map pick, 19-17.

KSCERATO's individual heroics continued on Nuke, but it was nowhere near enough to keep FURIA in the map. arT's drastic fall off between the first map and the latter two was palpable and distinctly visible on the server as the Brazilian team continued to struggle, opening duels not going their way time and time again as HEROIC put on a masterclass on the T side. Excellent utility usage, trading, and playmaking was the catalyst in a dominant half for the Danes, with FURIA only just managing to claw back some rounds at the end of the half to keep themselves in the running, 4-11.

The second half began with similar shades to that of Ancient, HEROIC continuing their dominance at the onset to swiftly move up to match point, a 1vs4 clutch and ace from stavn helping on the way to the scoreline. Another slip up from cadiaN's men wasn't to be this time though, and they wasted little time in sealing the map away, 16-5, to book their spot in the grand final send FURIA packing from the tournament.

Sorry Furia crowd cheating only takes you so far; Seeing this crowd cry was one of the best things ive ever seen so I want to thank Heroic for that. On a serious note ESL should probably increase security around Heroic players.

You talk like Heroic didn't cheated in 2020, at that Hunden scam. Crowd cheat in some rounds and clutches aren't as near as cheating seeing the pos of other players. Nt trying to take the merit out of FURIA

The Hunden thing is a completely separate discussion from the Brazilian crowd. Both cheated and both are shit. But Heroic won the game against a cheating crowd. Deal with the loss.

In terms of strategies - Outsiders look terrific, I haven’t seen anything quite like that from other teams. Also, Jame’s methodical CS is unique and it proved to be working when you have enough firepower. Regarding the firepower - if everyone shows up today like they did during play-offs, it’s going to be tough to beat Outsiders. Jame is now at his peak, fame and FL1T are consistent and norb3r7 has huge impact and is underrated while Qikert finally shows good CS. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Heroic win even in a 2-0 fashion, they’re the best Danish team rn and deserve a trophy as well.

I can't believe Heroic came back to win this match after getting smashed in Inferno. They looked lost and nervous, but the way they pulled it back was crazy. Happy for Heroic since they are a great team and I love their style, but I really wanted Furia to make it to the final. We'll have a great final, that's for sure.

They didn't show up for Outsiders-MOUZ. This match-up isn't that different apart from the fact that Heroic is a better team than MOUZ. If there is a crowd, it'd be because the show-match features a full Brazilian team.

No, but that's on a bad format. If you only look at twitch outside of Brazil, Outsiders vs Furia wouldn't have been a record-breaking game either. The difference is, that people who watch on twitch haven't bought tickets to do so. Meanwhile, a lot of Brazilians have bought tickets with the hopes of seeing one of their teams. That's the reason they made the show-match with a full Brazilian team. Otherwise no-one would show up.

NA and EU can make all the fun from us, you will never ever understand how much it means this furia run through the bottom to the semi-finals. BR CS is going through hard times since LG/SK decreased so much, seeing a national team going that far in a major is a dream to a crowd who used to celebrate so many titles a couple years ago.

But why only be excited for Brazilian CS? I personally prefer to watch a good match over watching someone like scream play. I just don't get the extreme nationalism to the point where it seems that if it weren't for Furia making it deep, there would be almost no crowd at any of the matches and to the point where there was an extreme cheating bias.

yes s1mple cheated in 2013 BUT it was "only" an ESL ban and it's been soo long, he was 16 years old at the time. i'm all for second chances, people can become better but heroic barely faced consequences for what happened and on top of that they cheated only two years ago

"They cheated only two years ago" doesn't matter if you believe in second chances. It's also been decided that it wasn't Heroic who cheated, but Hunden. If you go by a different standard, than there are a lot of teams that were cheating and should've had consequences. Maybe that's what it should be, but that's a choice we've made now. Also, I'd say that Heroic was dealt more consequences than you might think with the Hunden fiasco that happened afterward. If that's your stance though, all the power to you. But I disagree. NOW. If they cheated at the Major, that would've been a completely different point. But they didn't. They proved that they were good enough.

Major final with Heroic and Outsiders - honestly I didn't see that one coming. GL to both teams.

Furia is a greatest joke of this tournament. Rush and kill tactics. Idk how navi could not win this. Maybe you can only use the same playstyle to resist it, as heroic shown after switching on ancient.

Furia played a more careful game against NAVI? Even casters said so... The only way they would go forward would be if they changed their play style, and they did...

Unless either Jame, stavn or cadiaN have a massive performance in the final, I'd agree actually.

If stavn plays like he played on the two last maps, in my opinion he should get it. Sure, he coasted along for most of the tournament, but when the team needed him to perform, he did so in a massive way. If he doesn't though, give it to cadiaN or Jame.

I bet that if between Heroic and Navi, Heroic played first vs Furia they would've lost the game, and NAVI would've won the next day. The same happened here, NAVI played first and they lost mostly to the pressure of the crowd. My thinking is that the second team who is playing ( in this case Heroic) learnt thru NAVI's experience, and saw the pressure and how it looks like to be sarrounded by 18.000 people. So when they stepped in the arena, it felt like they are there for the second time. These are my thoughts, that small detail made a difference. Also in my opinion NAVI is better than both of them :) GG's
